He started his career with the SF Giants in 1962 until 1971, then the Indians from 1972 until mid-season of 1975 when he joined Texas. From there he played with the Padres in 1978-1979 before joining the Yankees in 1980 and then going back to Texas the same year.

After that he played with the Atlanta Braves in 1981, then Seattle in 1982, and finally the Kansas City Royals and then again with the Seattle Mariners in 1983.

After 22 years he had 314 wins and 265 losses. His lifetime ERA was 3.11. His best year at the age of 33 in 1972, he went 24-16 with the Cleveland Indians. He threw an amazing 5350.7 innings pitched in his career. There are no official statistics on spit-balls, but many believes that he has thrown them in the hundreds of thousands in his career.
