Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To rack a game of Nine Ball, all the balls must be in numerical order, from left to right?

Answer: False

Only the one has to be in the front of the rack, and the nine ball in the middle.
2. Sinking the nine off of the break is an automatic win?

Answer: True

Yes this is true, that is why you see serious players practicing just their break.
3. What happens if you break and sink the nine ball, but you also sink the cue ball in a pocket?

Answer: The nine ball will be spotted, and it is ball in hand for your opponent

When sitting on the sidelines for three or four games, this is a golden opportunity to build some momentum.
4. If you hit the lowest ball on the table first, then the cue ball goes two rails and hits the nine ball in, you do what?

Answer: Tell your opponent to rack em' up because you won

It's a win. This is what you call a carom shot, or in this case, probably a fluke.
5. A perfect break consists of the one ball dropping in a side pocket, and the cue ball staying mid-table?

Answer: True

This is the highest chance for a run out, with the one ball down and the cue in the middle of the table, it makes for an easy run out.
6. Jump shots are not allowed in Nine Ball?

Answer: False

They are allowed, but they are for extreme situations only.
7. A masse shot is played with your cue at an angle greater than 45 degrees?

Answer: True

You must get you cue higher than 45 degrees, then come down on the ball, and strike through it, without touching the cloth (quite tricky). It is also very hard to control, and not recommended to do unless taught.
8. Nine Ball is so popular (especially on TV) because of its speed and constant breaks?

Answer: True

Yes, this is why Nine Ball is widely televised compared to any other type of billiards. Its fast, up-beat, and makes it easy for commercial breaks.
9. Earl Strickland (a world class player) completed a challenge that consisted of running eleven nine ball tables in a row, for a huge dollar wager?

Answer: True

10. To enter most Nine Ball tournaments, you must first pay the entry fee, then a green fee?

Answer: True

This is pretty much standard.
11. What is a calcutta?

Answer: A bid that takes place before the tournament starts when players buy tickets on who they think will win the tournament, and the winners of the calcutta are payed out at the end

Many pool players go into these tournaments and bid on other players, and walk away from the tournament with big bucks sometimes. Calcuttas are quite common and popular too.
12. In the official rules for Nine Ball, after hitting the lowest ball on the table first, you must either sink a ball, or hit a rail for it to be a legal shot?

Answer: True

The pocket is considered a rail, so pocketing a ball is just as good as hitting a rail.
13. There is a ranking system for handicapped tournaments, consisting of different ranks for different levels of play, which enables the in-experienced players are able to compete and win?

Answer: True

Yes there is a ranking system, and to enter into a handicapped tournament, you must first be ranked.
14. People who are highly ranked but go to a new area and get rated a lot lower than their actual skill level, are called what?

Answer: Sandbaggers

15. Which of the following is usually one of the hardest parts of pool to learn?

Answer: The stroke

The stroke is probably the hardest thing to learn, just barely edging in front of consistency. Once the stroke is down, everything else seems to fall into place.
