Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Partick Thistle were formed in which year, the same year that Americans celebrated a significant anniversary?

Answer: 1876

Americans celebrated the centennial of the Declaration of Independence in 1876, whilst, in Glasgow, Partick Thiste F.C. were founded. Their more illustrious city neighbours, Rangers and Celtic, were founded in 1872 and 1888 respectively, whilst 1890 saw the foundation of the Scottish Football League.
2. Although formed in the district of Partick, since 1909 Thistle have made their home in which area of Glasgow, some two miles to the northeast of their birthplace?

Answer: Maryhill

Thistle had a few temporary grounds in the Partick/Kelvingrove area during their early years, before moving permanently to Maryhill in 1909. One of their unofficial nicknames is the Maryhill Magyars, in tribute to the great Hungarian national team of the 1950s.
3. What is the name of the stadium that Partick Thistle moved to in 1909, which was still their home 100 years later?

Answer: Firhill Stadium

Firhill Stadium was opened with a game against Clyde on 2nd October 1909. The record attendance for a Thistle home game was 49,838 for a game vs Rangers in 1922, although the ground record is just under 55,000 for an international match between Scotland and Ireland in 1928.

The official capacity of the ground became a much more modest 10,102 in season 2013-14 when the rebuilt main stand was opened.
4. What have been the official shirt colours of Partick Thistle since 1935?

Answer: Red & Yellow

Thistle played in various colours until January, 1935, when red and yellow became their permanent first choice. There have been various shirt designs over the years, often changing every season, with horizontal hoops and vertical stripes being the most popular choices.
5. Thistle won the Scottish F.A. Cup for the first time in 1921, beating which team in the final?

Answer: Rangers

Thistle knocked out Hibernian, East Stirlingshire, Motherwell and Hearts on their way to the final. At Celtic Park on 16th April 1921, they defeated Rangers 1-0 to lift the trophy, John Blair scoring the winning goal.
6. In October 1971, Partick Thistle reached the final of the Scottish League Cup, where they faced Jock Stein's all-conquering Celtic team. What was the outcome of the match?

Answer: Thistle won 4-1

In one of the biggest upsets in the history of Scottish football, Thistle beat Celtic 4-1. Celtic were in the middle of a nine-in-a-row league championship streak, whilst Thistle had only just been promoted from the second division. Goals from Alex Rae, Bobby Lawrie, Denis McQuade and Jimmy Bone had the underdogs 4-0 up within 37 minutes; Kenny Dalglish pulled one back for Celtic in the second half, but it was too little, too late.
7. What is the official nickname of Partick Thistle F.C.?

Answer: The Jags

Jags is unofficially a contraction of "jaggy thistles". Thistle is a common part of team names in Scottish football, both at senior and junior levels, with many of these teams also using the "Jags" nickname. The Diamonds are Airdrieonians, The Wasps are Alloa Athletic and The Buddies are St Mirren.
8. Which goalkeeper, capped 53 times by Scotland, made over 400 league appearances for Partick Thistle between 1970 and 1982?

Answer: Alan Rough

Rough made his Thistle debut towards the end of season 1969/70, and would go on to make 624 appearances for the club, 409 of them in league games. He took part in two world cup finals tournaments for his country, in 1978 and 1982. He was transferred to Hibernian in 1982.
9. Which one of Celtic's "Lisbon Lions" from 1967 took over the managerial reigns at Partick in 1974, guiding them into the Premier League and keeping them there until taking over the Hibernian job in 1980?

Answer: Bertie Auld

The "Lisbon Lions" was the nickname given to the Celtic team which won the European Cup Final in Lisbon in 1967. All four of the people listed were members of that team, and all went on to become managers, but Auld was the only one to take over that role at Partick Thistle.

He won the 1975-76 First Division title to gain promotion to the recently created Premier League. His defensive style of football wasn't always pretty to watch, but it was successful, as his team easily held their own against the "big boys" of Scottish football.

In 1980, he left Partick to manage recently-relegated Hibernian, and led them to promotion at the first attempt.
10. Who or what, in relation to Partick Thistle, is Kingsley?

Answer: Club Mascot

Unveiled in 2015, Kingsley was the somewhat controversial new club mascot. Designed by David Shrigley, an artist who has been nominated for the Turner Prize, the yellow "creature" gained the club plenty of publicity if nothing else.
