Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Caledonian and Inverness Thistle merged in 1994 to form a new club when two vacancies for membership of the Scottish League were announced. Which third Inverness club were originally meant to be included in the merger but opted to remain independent?

Answer: Clachnacuddin

There were three Inverness clubs playing in the Highland League in 1994 - Caledonian, Clachnacuddin and Inverness Thistle. There had long been disappointment that the Highland capital wasn't represented at national level (with Thistle particularly unfortunate not to be elected to the SFL in 1974), so when two vacancies became available for the 1994-95 season, the local clubs decided that one merged team would stand a better chance of election than individual applicants. Caley and Thistle went ahead with the merger but Clach eventually decided not to become involved.

The new club were duly elected, alongside Ross County, to the Scottish league for season 1994-95.
2. Inverness Caledonian Thistle were formed in 1994. The new club agreed to build a new stadium, but as this wouldn't be ready overnight, they played at which ground during their first two seasons as an SFL club?

Answer: Telford Street

Telford Street was Caledonian F.C.'s ground and would be used by ICT during their first two seasons. Kingsmill Park was Inverness Thistle's ground, Grant Street Park is Clachnacuddin's stadium, and Bught Park is the home of the city's shinty club.
3. What is the name of the brand new ground that Inverness Caledonian Thistle moved into in 1996?

Answer: Caledonian Stadium

Caledonian Stadium was built near the Kessock Bridge and was opened in November, 1996, with a league game against Albion Rovers. The official capacity of the stadium in 2018 was 7,151, although 7,753 fans managed to cram into the ground for a game against Rangers in 2008.
4. When Inverness Caledonian Thistle were formed in 1994, the new club needed a new strip so, not surprisingly, they adopted which two colours from their founder clubs?

Answer: Blue & Red

Caledonian traditionally wore blue shirts and white shorts, whilst Inverness Thistle wore red and black stripes with black shorts. The new kit was more blue than red to start with, but to placate Thistle fans, more red was added over the years. The most common kit design in the early 21st century was red and blue vertical stripes with blue shorts.
5. After making steady progress in their first five seasons as a league club, Inverness Caledonian Thistle hit the headlines in 2000 when they recorded a shock Scottish Cup third round win over which giants of the Scottish game?

Answer: Celtic

ICT had made it as far as the second tier of Scottish football by the turn of the century, but were considered massive underdogs when they were drawn away to Celtic in the 1999-00 Scottish Cup. Their 3-1 victory at Celtic Park shocked the nation, and prompted a famous headline in "The Sun" newspaper - "Super Caley go ballistic, Celtic are atrocious". ICT would go on to lose in a replay to Aberdeen in the fourth round.
6. In 2003-04, Inverness Caledonian Thistle finished top of the second tier of the SPL to gain promotion to the top tier. Unfortunately, league rules at the time insisted on stadia with a minimum capacity of 10,000 for top division matches. Where were they forced to play their "home" games for their first season in the top tier?

Answer: Aberdeen

Aberdeen is over 100 miles from Inverness so it was hardly an ideal situation for ICT in 2004-05. However the club performed admirably, finishing well clear of the relegation zone. Thankfully, the SPL changed the rules at the end of the season and reduced the minimum capacity required to 6,000, and ICT were able to return "home".
7. ICT reached their first major cup final in 2014, losing the League Cup final to which team?

Answer: Aberdeen

After a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Hearts in the semi-final at Easter Road, ICT met Aberdeen in the final at Celtic Park on 16th March 2014. The game itself finished goalless after extra time, and it was Aberdeen who prevailed in the penalty shoot-out to lift the trophy.
8. Just over twelve months after their 2014 League Cup final disappointment, Inverness Caledonian Thistle were back in the limelight, reaching the final of the Scottish F.A. Cup. Which team did they defeat to win their first major trophy?

Answer: Falkirk

ICT shocked Celtic again in 2014-15, this time in the semi-final at Hampden . That earned them a return trip to the national stadium for the final against Falkirk on 30th May 2015. With their opponents playing in the second tier at the time, ICT started the match as favourites.

The game was tied at 1-1 with four minutes left when James Vincent popped up with the winner to take the famous trophy back up the A9 to Inverness.
9. Who was the manager of Inverness Caledonian Thistle when they made their back-to-back national cup final appearances of 2014 & 2015?

Answer: John Hughes

John Hughes was a defender whose clubs during his playing career included Falkirk, Celtic and Hibernian. After managerial spells with Falkirk, Hibernian, Livingston and Hartlepool, he was appointed manager of ICT in December 2013. As well as their two final appearances, he led them to third place in the Premier League in 2014-15.

After a fall-out with the board of directors, he left the club in 2016.
10. In 2012, who became the first Inverness Caledonian Thistle player to be capped by Scotland at senior level?

Answer: Andrew Shinnie

Midfielder Shinnie joined ICT from Rangers in the summer of 2011 and spent two seasons with the club before joining Birmingham City. On 14th November 2012, he was capped by Scotland in a 2-1 friendly win away to Luxembourg.
