Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Canadian fighter had the first knockout victory in Pride?

Answer: Gary Goodridge

Goodridge brutally knocked out Oleg Taktarov with a right hand that left the "Russian Bear" out cold on the mat in the second fight at Pride 1 in 1997. Goodridge was a former arm wrestling champion from Barrie, Ontario.
2. Kazushi Sakuraba was known as "The Gracie Hunter" for his dominance over the famous fighting family from Brazil. Which Gracie fought Sakuraba to a decision loss in Pride FC?

Answer: Ryan Gracie

Both victories over Renzo and Royler were by submission via Kimura but neither tapped out, leaving the referee to stop the fights. Royce lasted 90 minutes before his corner threw in the towel. Royce was the only Gracie to gain a measure of revenge by defeating Saku seven years later at K-1 Dynamite.
3. Which Pride fighter had the longest reign as champion?

Answer: Wanderlei Silva

Silva was arguably the most dominant fighter in Pride history, not losing in his first 19 fights, and even his first loss, to Mark Hunt, was considered controversial, as he was outweighed by 80 pounds, and many ringside experts felt the judges got it wrong, including Bas Rutten. Silva defeated the legendary Sakuraba three times in Pride, cementing his status as a fighting icon in Japan.
4. Former UFC Heavyweight champion Mark Coleman won the Pride Grand Prix 2000 by defeating which fighter in the final bout?

Answer: Igor Vovchanchyn

Coleman pocketed $200,000 for his second round stoppage of Vovchanchyn via knee strikes to the head. He coasted into the final because Fujita, another Japanese icon, had to forfeit their semi-final bout after suffering injuries in his quarterfinal match with Mark Kerr.
5. UFC Middleweight champion Anderson "The Spider" Silva had a rather pedestrian 3-2 record in Pride FC. Which fighter submitted Silva with a highlight reel Flying Scissor Heel Hook at Pride Shockwave 2004?

Answer: Ryo Chonan

Silva was winning the fight until three minutes into the third round, when Chonan pulled off what is likely the most famous and unexpected submission in Pride FC history. Takase also submitted The Spider with a Triangle choke at Pride 26.
6. Which American won the final Pride FC bout at Pride 34 Kamikaze?

Answer: Jeff Monson

Monson submitted Kazuyuki Fujita with a rear naked choke to finish off the April 2007 event. This came a month after Dream Stage Entertainment sold Pride to Zuffa, owners of the rival UFC. Although the alleged intent was to keep Pride functional, no further Pride events were ever promoted.
7. The most highly anticipated fight in Mixed Martial Arts history took place at Pride Final Conflict 2005 between which of the following two combatants?

Answer: Fedor Emelianenko and Mirko Crocop

Fedor and Crocop waged a war to determine who was, arguably, the best fighter in the world at the time. The first round was relatively close, with Fedor seemingly getting the better of the exchanges. The second and third rounds saw Fedor dominate Crocop and prove to his rabidly loyal fans that he was "The Baddest Man on the Planet".
8. Which Brazilian won the Middleweight tournament at Pride Final Conflict 2005?

Answer: Shogun Rua

Rua came out on top by knocking out Arona in the final. His path to the climactic match was not easy either, as he defeated Rampage Jackson, Nogueira, Alistair Overeem and finally Arona. Silva lost in the semis to Arona but joined in the celebration after his fellow Chute Boxe training partner was crowned champion.
9. The biggest weight disparity in Pride history was in Pride 3 between Daiju Takase and Emmanuel Yarborough. What was the weight difference between them?

Answer: over 400 pounds

Yarborough was a Sumo wrestler weighing in at over 600 pounds, while Takase was about 180. Takase basically ran around the ring trying to avoid being smothered until opportunity arose in the second round, when he got Big Manny to the ground and pounded on him until he tapped out. Yarborough also fought at UFC 3, losing of course. His only win? By submission (Smothering).
10. When Rampage Jackson won the Pride FC in 2010, he was the _____ UFC champion.

Answer: 13th

Lightweight (Jens Pulver, Sean Sherk), Welterweight (Carlos Newton), Middleweight (Murilo Bustamante, Anderson Silva), Light Heavyweight (Chuck Liddell, Vitor Belfort, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson), Heavyweight(Mark Coleman, Maurice Smith,Kevin Randleman, Ricco Rodriguez, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira).
