1. Major League Baseball, 1941 -- this player set the record for the longest streak for consecutive games with a hit. Who was it?

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

During the 1941 season, "The Yankee Clipper," Joe DiMaggio, set the record for the longest streak of consecutive games with a hit. He broke the record previously set by Willie Keeler, which was 45 consecutive games, on June 29th. He went on to hit safely in 56 consecutive games, until July 17th.
2. National Hockey League, 1985-1986 season -- playing for the Edmonton Oilers, who broke Bobby Orr's record for most goals by a defenseman in a single season. Who was it?

Answer: Paul Coffey

Paul Coffey was a journeyman through the National Hockey League through his career (1980 to 2001). He started his career with Edmonton, the team he played for when he set the record for most goals by a defenseman in a single season, with 48 (Bobby Orr scored 46 goals in 1974-75, playing for the Boston Bruins). He also played for eight other teams after his time with the Oilers.
3. National Football League, 2012 -- this Detroit Lions receiver set the single season record for most receiving yards. Breaking Jerry Rice's record from 1995, he ended his season with 1,964 yards. Who was it?

Answer: Calvin Johnson

Standing at 6'5" tall, Calvin Johnson dominated the NFC North division for nine years. Drafted in 2007, Johnson played his entire career with the Detroit Lions, and broke the single season receiving record, previously held by Jerry Rice (1,848 yards).
4. National Basketball Association, 1990 -- this Orlando Magic point guard set the record for most assists by one player in a single game. Who was it?

Answer: Scott Skiles

Scott Skiles played for ten seasons in the NBA, and with five different teams. On December 30, 1990, Skiles set the single season record for assists in a game, with 30 against the Denver Nuggets. The previous record was 29, set by Kevin Porter in February 1978, playing for the NJ Nets against the Rockets.
5. Major League Baseball, 1998 -- this Baltimore Orioles third baseman broke the record for consecutive games played, previously held by Lou Gehrig. Who was it?

Answer: Cal Ripken Jr.

Ripken played in 2,632 consecutive games from 1982 to 1998. He shattered the record 2,130 that was held by Lou Gehrig, that had been set in 1939.
6. National Hockey League, 1975 to 1987 -- this player finished his entire career having never missed a game. This accomplishment also set the NHL record for most consecutive games played. Who was it?

Answer: Doug Jarvis

Jarvis played for three different teams throughout his 12 year career. He played all 964 games in his career without missing a game. Those 964 consecutive games set an NHL record for consecutive games played (previously held by Gary Unger with 914, from 1968 to 1979).
7. National Football League, 2007 -- this Minnesota Vikings running back breaks the record for most rushing yards in a single game. Who was it?

Answer: Adrian Peterson

Jamal Lewis had set the previous record for most rushing yards in a single game in 2003 with Baltimore, when he rushed for 295 yards. It stood until 2007, when Adrian Peterson surpassed it by one yard. Peterson rushed for 296 yards against San Diego on November 4th.
8. National Basketball Association, 1973 -- the NBA started recording blocks as an official statistic at the start of the season. This player set the record for most blocks in a single game, with 17. Who was it?

Answer: Elmore Smith

Smith recorded 17 blocks in a single game as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1973 season. He also had games with 14 blocks in multiple games that season. Wilt Chamberlain blocked 23 shots in a single game in 1968, but the NBA didn't start tracking blocks until 1973, so his number did not count when Smith recorded his 17 blocks.
9. Major League Baseball, 1973 -- this Hall of Fame pitcher set the record for most strikeouts in a single season. Who was it?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

Nolan Ryan amassed a career strikeout total of 5,714. 383 of those came in the 1973 season, which surpassed the previous record of 382, pitched by Sandy Koufax in the 1965 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
10. National Hockey League, 1941 -- this goalie set the record for most saves by a goalie in a single game. He faced 83 shots, and stopped 80 of them. Who was it?

Answer: Sam LoPresti

Sam LoPresti played for the Chicago Blackhawks during his brief two years in the NHL. Despite being in the league for only two seasons (40-41 and 41-42), LoPresti etched his name in the NHL record books in 1941. In a game against the Boston Bruins, he faced an NHL record 83 shots, and stopped 80 of them, which was also an NHL record. The Bruins won 3-2.
