Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the main body of a boat called?

Answer: hull

2. Which of these is the larger sail?

Answer: main sail

3. Which sail IS a head sail?

Answer: jib

Main sail is the larger sail that you can't sail without, quite obviously the main sail. The Spinaker and Jib sails are raised at the head of the boat and are therefore headsails. Second and front sails are, to the extent of my knowledge, are not sails.
4. In this order, what names are associated with the back of the boat, front, left and right of the boat?

Answer: stern, bow, port, starboard

The back of the boat is often referred to as aft, and the front as forward. Port and left are associated with the color red, and starboard and right are associated with blue or green.
5. The back part of the boat, where the name is often written, is called the what?

Answer: transom

6. Not all boats steer with a wheel. What is the name of the object generally steered with in smaller boats?

Answer: tiller

Some somewhat large boats also have tillers, not just small boats. Many tillers have tiller extentions connected to them to make it easier to move around and to get a longer reach. The tiller extention is to be held like a microphone.
7. What is the name of the board that sticks down the center of the boat into the water and is used for stability?

Answer: centerboard

When a centerboard is pulled up and cleated in place, but still attached to the boat, it is a centerboard. When it is very long and thin and is entirely removable, it is a daggerboard. When it is attached to the bottom of the boat (usually on larger boats) it is called a keel.
8. On board a boat, ropes are not called ropes. What are they called?

Answer: lines

Some lines are also called sheets (the lines used to pull in a sail ex: jib sheet, main sheet).
9. The rope that is used to raise a sail is called a what?

Answer: halyard

10. What is the 'mast-like object' that is attached to the mast? (Hint: It gets its name from the sound it makes when it hits you in the head)

Answer: boom

Trust me, boom is a perfect name because boom is what it does when it come swinging around in the wind and whacks you in the back of the head! OUCH!
