Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first player in NFL history to rush for an average of 100 yards per game in a season, and did it seven times?

Answer: Jim Brown

The others never averaged 100 yards per game in a season, even once in their career. Brown, a career Cleveland Brown, did it first in 1958 when he rushed for 1527 yards in only 12 games. Jim would do it six more times, including his final season in 1965. Brown was a nine-time Pro Bowler.
2. The Vikings lost a great coach in 1983 when Bud Grant stepped down. Who was his 38-year old assistant who replaced him, was much more aggressive than Grant, and led the team to a disasterous 3-13 season?

Answer: Les Steckel

The others never were a head coach. Grant retired after being at the helm for 17 Viking seasons. Steckel saw his only head coaching season in 1984, and justifiably. After the terrible 1984 season, Bud came back in 1985 to make the team right again. He coached the team to a 7-9 record. Jerry Burns then took the helm in 1986 for multiple seasons.
3. Which quarterback in 1962, set a record for throwing 33 touchdowns in a season, then broke his own record the following season by throwing 36?

Answer: Y.A. Tittle

The others did not begin their careers until the 1970s and 1980s. Born Yelberton Abraham Tittle, his previous career high was throwing 20 with the 1953 San Francisco 49ers. In 1962 and 1963, his TD/Int ratios were 33-20 and 36-14, respectively. He didn't make the Pro Bowl in 1963. Ironically, Y.A. retired from the New York Giants after the following season.
4. In 1973, O.J. Simpson rushed for a record 2003 yards with the Bills of Buffalo. What was the nickname of the offensive line who blocked for him in the season?

Answer: The Electric Company

Two guards became famous for their contribution to Simpson's season. They were Reggie McKenzie and Joe DeLamielleure. O.J. averaged a tremendous six yards per carry in his record season. He carried the ball 332 times with 12 touchdowns. He broke the record of the great Jim Brown, who rushed for 1863 yards 10 seasons earlier. He rushed for 1125 yards in 1974, then 1817 in 1975.
5. These two brothers played for several seasons. One was an offensive Hall of Fame guard with the Raiders, and his brother played with the Browns, Chiefs, and Cardinals as a defensive lineman. Who were these brothers?

Answer: Marvin and Gene Upshaw

The others were tight ends, and the brother name did not exist. Gene was the most famous of the two. Playing from 1967-1981, all with the Raiders, he was a Pro Bowler seven times in his career. He protected such quarterback greats in George Blanda, Daryle Lamonica, Ken Stabler, and Jim Plunkett.
6. I played for four seasons with the Cardinals, but there was more to it than that. In 1976 and 1977, I caught a total of 51 passes. I missed the 1978 season due to a torn Achilles tendon. I was ready to go in the 1979 season, but had a heart attack in training camp and died. Who am I?

Answer: J.V. Cain

The others were all linebackers. Cain went to two NFC Division playoff games in his short four seasons with the Cardinals. He left the NFL with 76 receptions, 1014 yards, and nine touchdowns.
7. I was a very versatile player. I was a rookie in 1954 as an Eagle defensive back. In 1955, I played on the offense and scored touchdowns while rushing and receiving. With the Cardinals in 1960, I led the league in punting and interceptions. When I retired in 1964 with Green Bay, I had racked up 35 interceptions. Who am I?

Answer: Jerry Norton

The others were all quarterbacks. The former SMU great also played one season with the Cowboys in 1962. He also averaged 44 yards per punt in his career. Jerry played for 11 seasons from 1954-1964.
8. Which Redskin kicker spent six seasons in Washington, left for Cleveland in 1986, then came back to the Redskins after kicking only six field goals as a Brown?

Answer: Mark Moseley

The others were all wide receivers. Mark was a rookie in 1970, and scored 81 points for Washington. His greatest season was in 1983, when he went 33-47 with 62 of 63 PATs for 161 points. After his sixth season, he joined the Browns in 1986, but after kicking only six field goals for Cleveland, he came back to the Redskins to retire after the season.
9. Which wide receiver had the nickname, 'Crazy Legs'?

Answer: Elroy Hirsch

The others were kickers. His nickname came from Elroy's unique running style. He played for the Los Angeles Rams from 1949-1957. A three-time Pro Bowler, Hirsch caught 66 passes with 17 touchdowns in the 1961 season. In his rookie season, he rushed for 287 yards and caught 22 passes. Hirsch retired with 53 touchdowns.
10. I played my entire career as a Raider offensive lineman. Eight times in my career I went to the Pro Bowl. I retired in 1982. In 1989, I was inducted into the Hall of Fame, but more importantly, that's when I became the NFLs first black head coach. Who am I?

Answer: Art Shell

The others didn't have the ethnic background of Shell. Art played for 15 seasons from 1968-1982. As a head coach, he helmed the Raiders for six seasons from 1989-1994. As a head coach, Shell didn't make it to a Super Bowl, but went to three as a player. His first resulted in a loss to the Packers, then two victories over the Vikings and Eagles.
