Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Formula 1, the Canadian Grand Prix has been regularly held at which circuit in Montreal since 1978?

Answer: Circuit Gilles Villeneuve

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is located on an island in the St Lawrence River, east of downtown Montreal. Opened in 1978, it is named after a local Formula 1 driver who was tragically killed during practice for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix. The Canadian Grand Prix has been held there every year between 1978 and 2019, with the exception of 1987 and 2009 when the race was not included on the Formula 1 schedule.
2. The Quebec Nordiques were members of the World Hockey Association from 1972 until 1979, when they joined the National Hockey League. Which city did they depart to in 1995, leaving the city of Quebec without an NHL team?

Answer: Denver

The Nordiques were one of the original WHA franchises who began play in 1972. In 1977, they won the Avco World Trophy with victory over the Winnipeg Jets in the finals. When the WHA folded in 1979, the Nordiques were one of four teams who were absorbed into an enlarged NHL.

Their best performances in that league were reaching the conference finals in 1982 and 1985, losing to the New York Islanders and Philadelphia Flyers respectively. Financial problems led to them relocating to Denver in 1995, where they were renamed the Colorado Avalanche.
3. Gaetan Boucher, from Quebec City, was an Olympic gold medallist in which sport?

Answer: Speed skating

Gaetan Boucher was born in Quebec in 1958 and was a champion speed skater. After finishing sixth in the 1000 m at the Montreal Olympics of 1976, he won the silver medal in the same event at Lake Placid in 1980. The highlights of his career came in Sarajevo in 1984, when he won gold in both the 1000 and 1500 m.

He was the first Canadian to win an individual gold medal at a Winter Olympics.
4. What is the name of the team from Montreal who became members of Major League Soccer in 2012?

Answer: Montreal Impact

Montreal Impact joined MLS in 2012 and originally played home games at the Olympic Stadium before moving in to their permanent home at Saputo Stadium. They qualified for the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League where they went all the way to the finals, losing to America FC of Mexico.

In 20i6, they had their best MLS season up until that point, reaching the conference finals, where they lost to Canadian rivals Toronto FC.
5. The Canadian Open tennis tournament is held in both Montreal and Toronto. How do they decide which city hosts it each year?

Answer: In even-numbered years, the women play in Montreal, the men in Toronto, and vice-versa for odd-numbered years

Up until 1980, both men's and women's events took place in Toronto. Since then, Montreal has hosted the men in odd-numbered years and the women in even-numbered years. The Montreal event takes place at the Stade IGA, formerly known as the Stade Du Maurier. Champions in Montreal include John McEnroe, Rafael Nadal, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf.
6. Eric Gagne, from Montreal, was a competitor in which sport in the early 21st century?

Answer: Baseball

Eric Gagne was born in Montreal in 1976 and was a baseball pitcher. Drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 1994, he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers the following year. In 2003, he won the Cy Young Award after converting 55 saves. A three-time All-Star during his time wit the Dodgers, his career was blighted by injuries, although he did manage to earn a World Series ring during a brief spell with the Boston Red Sox in 2007.
7. The Montreal Alouettes have won a number of Canadian Football League Grey Cup titles during two spells of existence, but what was the name of a less successful team that played in the city in the 1980s?

Answer: Montreal Concordes

The history of CFL football in Montreal since the early 1980s is a rather complicated one. The original Alouettes franchise, founded in 1946, folded in 1982 due to financial and ownership problems. The CFL quickly replaced them with a new team, the Concordes, but this franchise struggled to attract fans, and, in 1986, rebranded themselves as the Alouettes, but folded the following year.

The city eventually got a "new" Alouettes team in 1996 when the Baltimore Stallions relocated north of the border.
8. The Montreal Expos became Major League Baseball's first Canadian franchise when they joined the National League in 1969. Plagued by low attendances in the early 21st century, where did they play a number of "home" games in 2003 and 2004?

Answer: San Juan, Puerto Rico

The Expos franchise never really recovered from the trauma of 1994. With the best record in baseball on 12 August 1994, a players strike effectively pulled the plug on the season. A subsequent fire sale of some of their best players by the owners turned the fans against the team, and attendances plummeted. Playing home games in Puerto Rico was only a stop-gap solution, and the franchise relocated to Washington D.C. in 2005, where they became the Nationals.
9. Jacques Villeneuve, from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, won the Formula I driver's championship in 1997, driving for which team?

Answer: Williams

Jacques Villeneuve was born in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in 1971, the son of former Formula 1 driver Gilles Villeneuve. He won the Indianapolis 500 in 1995, before moving to Formula 1 the following year, signing with the Williams team. In just his second season, he was was world champion. Trailing Michael Schumacher by a single point going into the last race, the European Grand Prix in Jerez, the pair collided, forcing the German to retire, but Villeneuve managed to finish the race in third place, enough to clinch the title.
10. The men's Canadian Open golf tournament has taken place at a number of clubs in Quebec, but which one hosted it ten times between 1904 and 2014?

Answer: Royal Montreal

Royal Montreal Golf Club was founded in 1873, making it the oldest surviving club in North America. The club has played over three different course layouts over the years, and the Canadian Open has been played over all three. The very first edition was held there in 1904, with Jack Oke winning the title. Subsequent winners at Royal Montreal include Tom Weiskopf and Tim Clark.
