Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sports announcer Michael Buffer was best known for saying what phrase at the start of a boxing match?

Answer: Let's get ready to rumble!

On Thursday night of October 14, 1999, Michael Buffer was in Augusta, GA, as part of the pre-game festivities for the Augusta Lynx home opener. When Mike Tyson was hurting people with his boxing gloves, not his teeth, Buffer vaulted to prominence as an announcer, and made a career out of five words: "Let's get ready to rumble!"

The trademarked phrase, delivered with a "cool and smokey voice" is self-promoted (most of us are accomplished at self-promotion) as "the ultimate pre-event energizer."
2. In bowling, how many strikes are necessary to receive a perfect score of 300?

Answer: 12

The maximum score in a game of 10 pin bowling is 300. This is scored by bowling 12 strikes. That is, one for each frame, and a strike with both bonus balls in the 10th frame. In this way, each frame will score 30 points.

Definition of a strike: When all 10 pins are knocked down with the first ball, a player is awarded 10 points, plus a bonus of whatever he scores with his next 2 balls. In this way, the points scored for the two balls after the strike are scored twice.

And remember... bowling IS a sport! :)
3. Which female tennis player is nicknamed, "Fraulein Forehand"?

Answer: Steffi Graf

The word "Fraulein" in this question is German, and this should tell you that one of these tennis players was born in Germany. It is Steffi Graf. Hingis was born in Slovakia, while Navratilova and Novotna were born in the Czech Republic.
4. On the golf course, which club are you using if you have a "Texas Wedge"?

Answer: Putter

This term was popularized by Ben Hogan. A player might have to land a ball short of a green to allow it bounce up onto the green. When a player's ball is stopped short of the green, the putter might be a better choice for the shot because of the hardness of the fairway, collar, and shortness of the grass.

Therefore, a putter would be used rather than a wedge. You can also use the putter to slap the ball out of a bunker.
5. Which college basketball team played its home games inside the Carrier Dome in 2004?

Answer: Syracuse

The Carrier Dome was located in Syracuse, New York.
6. Who did not coach the Chicago Bulls in the 1980s?

Answer: Bill Fitch

Bill Fitch had been a coach of the NBA for 25 seasons. He actually coached the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics during that decade.
7. In Major League Baseball, how far is it from home plate to first base?

Answer: 90 feet

The total distance from home plate, around the bases, back to home plate, is 360 feet. The baseball diamond (infield) is also a square, so each side has to be 90 feet. The outfield fence distances vary.
8. What is the first name of legendary horse trainer, D. Wayne Lukas?

Answer: Darrell

Darrell Wayne Lukas was born on September 2, 1935, on a farm in Antigo near Chicago. As a boy, Lukas said, his most cherished possession was a pony. Even before high school, he was hanging out at fair grounds and trading for broken-down horses with small-time trainers who raced at bush tracks.
9. Which world record breaking Olympic swimmer was nicknamed, "Madame Butterfly"?

Answer: Mary T. Meagher

Mary T. Meagher, appropriately nicknamed, "Madame Butterfly", won three gold medals at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics, in both butterfly events (100m and 200m), and in the 4x100m medley relay. In the '88 games in Seoul, "Madame Butterfly", still managed a bronze in the 200m butterfly, and a silver in the medley 4x100m relay.

Meagher was born on October 27, 1964 in Louisville, Kentucky.
10. In 1990, which race car driver won his first Indy 500 victory by setting a record speed of 185.981 mph?

Answer: Arie Luyendyk

185.981 mph was one of the fastest speeds in Indy 500 history. Dutch driver, Arie Luyendyk, was best known for his sensational 1990 and 1997 Indianapolis 500 victories. Throughout his distinguished career, he has experienced success in many different forms of racing. He won the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1989, and the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1998.
