Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did San Diego Padre pitcher Mark Eaton accidently stab himself, forcing him to miss a start?

Answer: Cutting plastic wrap off a DVD

The DVD was a gift. Eaton attempted to cut the plastic wrapper off with a kitchen knife in May 2001. The knife slipped. Eaton required stitches at the hospital emergency room to close the cut.
2. KC Royals catcher Brent Mayne, missed a month on the DL with a wrenched back in 2002. How did he do it?

Answer: Turning his head to check traffic while crossing a road.

All the other choices happened to other big leaguers. Roberto Clemente fell from a hammock which began a string of back problems. Moises Alou tore knee ligaments falling from a treadmill. And Ryan Klesko missed some games pulling a muscle while lifting his lunch tray.
3. What was unusual about an accident that caused 19 injuries at the 1971 Indy 500 motor race?

Answer: The only car involved was the pace car

A pylon, used as a sign to slow down, had been misplaced. The Dodge Challenger pace car, driven by Elden Palmer, slowed too late, striking a policeman, and a temporary stand filled with journalists. Astronaut John Glenn and sportscaster Chris Schenkel were (uninjured) passengers in the car.
4. Who's agonizing and bone-jarring injury, has been shown an American television more than any other?

Answer: Vinko Bogataj

Bogataj was the Yugoslavian ski jumper whose disastrous run was for years, shown every week on ABC's Wide World of Sports, as epitome of "the agony of defeat." Bogataj rolled, tumbled, and bounced down the ramp during the International Ski Flying Championship in Oberstdorf, West Germany March 21, 1970. His injuries were minor.
5. How did baseball's Henry Cotto, come to miss games with a burst ear drum in 1991?

Answer: Pushed a Q-Tip in too far

Henry was minding his own business, cleaning his ears in the locker room, when Seattle teammate Ken Griffey Jr. accidently bumbed into him, forcing the Q-Tip deeper than the manufacturer would suggest.
6. Forget career-ending. How about life-ending? Who was killed by his own fans?

Answer: Andres Escobar

The Columbian soccer player was shot and killed in Medellin. It was just 10 days after accidentally putting the ball past his own goal keeper, in the 1994 World Cup competition in the USA.
7. Phillies pitcher Jeff Juden, started the 1994 season on the disabled list, while waiting for his infected pitching arm to heal. How did it get infected?

Answer: Getting a tattoo

Juden bounced around from Houston to the Phillies, Giants, Expos, Indians, Brewers, Angels, and Yankees. While with Philly, later in that same 1994 season, he became the first Phillies pitcher since Steve Carlton to hit a grand slam.
8. In the 1970's, Philadelphia Eagles' Tim Rossovich missed an entire NFL season after eating light bulbs?

Answer: False

It's true that the 1969 Pro Bowl lineman was in the habit of munching on light bulbs and setting himself on fire, but miraculously never missed a down as a result of it. Rossivich went on to play with San Diego and Houston, before becoming a fulltime actor, mostly in B-movies and TV guest appearances.
9. Who famously punched Rudy Tomjonovich in a 1977 NBA game, that damaged Rudy's skull and his brain?

Answer: Kermit Washington

10. In 1983, Detroit Tiger Alan Trammell sprained his knee and missed two weeks when he fell off what?

11. The 2002-2003 Illinois State High School CHESS championship tournament rules, specifically allow substitutions for injured players?

Answer: Steve Yeager

Yeager is an interesting character. The nephew of famed test pilot Chuck Yeager, Steve posed for a playgirl centerfold, and was best man at L.A. Mayor Tom Bradley's wedding.
13. In the 1998 NFL season, Deion Sanders of the Cowboys, was hampered all year by an injury to his metatarsal phalangeal joint. What is this injury better known as?

Answer: Turf Toe

Very common since the advent of artificial turf, it occurs at the base of the big toe, when the toe is jammed into the turf or bent back further than it should go. It causes extensive swelling and pain, prevented players from "pushing off" on that foot or in some cases, from playing at all.

18. Which member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sat out of a few days of practice, at the 2002 training camp due to a spider bite?
