Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You recognise a soccer field on this drawing. Which international organization is responsible for making and maintaining the soccer rules, organizing various competitions, and constantly improving the game?

Answer: FIFA

Soccer is the American word for the game that is called football in many European languages. This reflects in the name FIFA ("Fédération International de Football Association"), the organization based in Zurich (Switzerland) we were looking for.
Soccer is played on a grassy terrain measuring 90 - 120 meters on 45 -75 meters. International games are played on a rectangle measuring 100 - 110 m by 64 - 75 m.
Since 1930 the FIFA organizes a World Championship every four years. Only during the Second World War no championships have been played. World Champions include countries as Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Germany, England, Italy, France and Spain.
The other abbreviations are for international sports organizations for chess (FIDE: Fédération International des Echecs), boxing (WBA: World Boxing Association) and snooker (WPSBA: World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association).
2. The next sport is played on this sketched floor, completely surrounded by walls (the rear wall being normally wholly out of glass, so any audience can watch the game from outside). I've not included the lining on the front walls or side walls in my sketch. What is the name of this sport?

Answer: Squash

The correct answer is squash. The game was invented in England before 1830 and has spread worldwide. The floor is about 6,40 m by 9,75 m.
Squash players use rackets to hit a ball against the front wall, but the ball may hit the side walls and the back wall too.
Sepak takraw is a South-East Asian ball sport in which the players use soccer techniques (especially kicking) on a volleyball court.
Ulama is a Mexican ball sport in which teams bounce a rubber ball with their hips.
Hurling is an Irish ball sport played with wooden sticks on a pitch similar to rugby fields.
3. Which sport is played on this outdoor surface?

Answer: Lacrosse

Lacrosse is the game we're looking for. Origins of this game can be traced to native Americans before the arrival of Spanish and Portuguese explorers, but the official rules were only codified in 1867. In Canada and the USA lacrosse is quite popular. The sport has spread out to Central-America, about twenty European countries, more than half a dozen Asian nations, Australia and New-Zealand.
Lacrosse is played on a terrain measuring 110 by 60 yards, by teams of ten players each. The object is to place the ball into the opponent's goal (situated in the circular crease on each defensive area), using a stick ending in a pocket (resembling a small net).
Codeball is an almost forgotten sport in which a football is kicked into a number of bowls, with similar rules to golf. It was fairly popular in the 1930's.
Flickerball is played on improvised outdoor rectangular fields (usually 50 by 25 yards). On each of the short sides there is a goal post resembling a cardboard box with a hole in the centre. Teams have to pass an American football through the box hole (scoring two points). Hitting the box without passing its hole renders one single point.
Four square is played on a hard floor divided in (as you could guess from the name) four equal squares. Per square one player is present to hit the ball with his hands only into another square.
4. The smallest of these surfaces is also the most simple to draw. Out of the following Belgian athletes, who was one of the European champions in the sport played on this surface?

Answer: Jean-Michel Saive

I've sketched a table tennis table, measuring 274 cm by 152,5 cm. The black line I've added is the net. The white line is only important in the doubles competition when one team serves the ball: it has to bounce in the own box and the diagonally opposed box to be correctly in play.
Jean-Michel Saive (born 1969) played table tennis at seven consecutive Olympics (from 1988 until 2012). Alas, he did not win any Olympic medal. He was European champion in 1994 and won 25 times the Belgian national championship.
Vincent Kompany (born 1986) is a Belgian soccer player. Xavier Malisse (born 1980) played tennis and Wout Wijsmans (born 1977) was a Belgian volleyball player.
5. Which BALL sport is played upon this surface?

Answer: Broomball

Broomball is played on exactly the same rinks as ice hockey, and with very similar rules. But broomball uses a cylindrical ball, whereas ice hockey is played with a puck (a rubber disk). Another difference with ice hockey is that broomball players don't use skates - they have to wear rubber soled shoes fit for running on ice. The sticks used in ice hockey are replaced by brooms of regulated length and width.
The ice rink used for broomball (and thus also for ice hockey) measures 200 feet by 85 feet.
Curling and ice stock sport are two games in which a team tries to deliver a thick disk as close as possible to a target on the ice. A curling surface (called a sheet) is 146 to 150 feet in length by 14.5 to 16.5 feet wide. Ice stock sport has no standard measures for the playing surface.
Ten pin bowling is not played on ice. The bowling lane measures 60 feet by 41.5 inches.
6. Most of you will have recognised a basketball court in this sketch. Who invented this sport in 1891?

Answer: James Naismith

The basketball court measures 28 by 15 meters. James Naismith invented this game in December 1891, when he tried to get order in a boisterous class. Naismith (1861 -1939) at the time worked as a teacher of physical education at the Springfield College in Massachusetts.
Naismith's rules were inspired by a desire of limiting injuries and by the use of a rather small hall (compared to the outdoor fields for American football or rugby). Later additions have been made to his rule sets in order to insure a fast pace for the game.
Pierre de Coubertin (1863-1937) was a French historian best known to start the modern Olympics.
Michel Bréal (1832-1915) was a French linguist and a friend of de Coubertin's. He came up with the idea of reviving the marathon for the Olympics.
John Sholto Douglas (1844-1900) is better known as the 9th Marquess of Queensberry. He drafted the official rules for the boxing sport.
7. This surface measures 30 by 20 meters. My drawing may be unclear, but there's a white dotted line in the middle (15 meters from the goals), a yellow dotted line at 5 meters of each goal and a red dotted line at 2 meters of each goal. Which sport is played in this surface?

Answer: Water polo

Most sport surfaces use full lines, unless the surface was made for multiple sports. So the DOTTED lines may have indicated that you're looking for a sports surface quite distinct from the others in this quiz.
Indeed: the dotted lines for water polo are indicated by small cones on the bottom of the swimming pool. That's why there are no full lines.
Angleball is a sport played on a surface similar to korfball. But instead of throwing the ball through the basket ("korf") as in korfball, angleball players have to use the playing ball to knock off a ball situated on top of the (usually 10 feet high) pole of the opposing team.
Cycle ball is played by teams of two bicycle drivers. They try to drive the ball past the other team in a goal using only their bikes and the head.
Jai alai is a very fast ball sport played between three walls. Players use a special glove to hit the ball against the front wall until someone drives the ball out of bounds.
8. Of course you did recognise here a tennis court. In which city is a Grand Slam tennis tournament played on a red court such as I've drawn here?

Answer: Paris

The four Grand Slam events in tennis are the Australian Open played in Melbourne, the French Open (Roland Garros) in Paris, Wimbledon (a suburb of London) and the US Open played in New York (Flushing Meadows Park).
Since the very beginning in 1877, Wimbledon has always been played on a grass lawn.
The French Open started in 1891. Apart from a few of the early years (playing on sand), the French Open has been almost always played on red clay.
The US Open started in 1881 on grass, switched briefly to (green) clay in 1975 and has finally chosen for hardcourt in 1978.
The Australian Open started in 1905 on grass and switched to hardcourt in 1988.
In any of these tournaments, the court measures 78 feet by 36 feet. In matches for single players, the width of the court is limited to 27 feet.
The type of surface influences the speed of the game and the height of the balls' bounce. Grass courts tend to be the fastest, and clay courts tend to be the slowest.
9. On this court, the area nearest to the goal is a restricted area. Only the defending goalkeeper may stay in this area of 6 metres surrounding the goal (called the D-zone). On what conditions may players of the attacking team enter this zone?

Answer: Jumping from outside

Handball is played on a court measuring 40 by 20 meters. Each team consists of one goalkeeper and six field players.
Field players may throw the ball, pass it around or dribble with the ball. They may also touch the ball with another body part above (and including) the knee, but rarely do so. Only the defending goalkeeper may hit the ball with his feet (when he is in his own D-zone).
The D-zone is almost the exclusive terrain of the defending goalkeeper. Defending players are not allowed to cross their D-zone on their way to a better defending position, and attacking players must leave the D-zone by the shortest way immediately.
The only time an attacking player may touch the ball while in the D-zone of the opposing team, is while the player is still in the air. Touching the ball while any body part touches the floor is a foul.
Jumping from outside the D-zone and shooting the ball before touching the ground is the preferred attacking tactic. It makes handball quite spectacular to look at.
Free throws (after a foul of the opposing team) are taken from the second semi-circle, situated at 9 meters from the goal.
Corner kicks are not part of the handball rules.
10. Volleyball became an Olympic sport in 1964, both for men's teams as for women's teams. Which of the following (meanwhile dissolved) countries won an Olympic medal in each and every Olympics they participated in, both in the men's competition and in the women's competition?

Answer: Soviet Union

Volleyball is played by two teams of six players each on a court measuring 18 by 9 meters. It was used as a demonstration game in Paris 1924, but the official competition started in Tokyo in 1964.
The Soviet Union competed in both men's and women's competition in 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1988. Their men's team won three gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal. Their women's team did even better, with four gold and two silver medals. After the Soviet Union split in 1991, most of the former Soviet Union states competed as the Unified Team in 1992 (with a silver medal for the women - the men stranded on the 7th place). Since 1996, Russia has taken over the statistics for the Soviet Union, and Russian teams have won several medals starting in 2000. The Olympics of 1996 in Atlanta didn't result in Russia winning any medal in volleyball.
Czechoslovakia dissolved after the Olympic Games of 1996. Between 1964 and 1996, they competed five times in the men's competition (winning silver in 1964 and bronze in 1968) and twice in the women's competition (no medals).
Yugoslavia played until 2000. The men's team won two medals out of three participations, while no women's team qualified.
East Germany and West Germany competed until 1988. East Germany won one silver medal in each completion (one medal out of two participations for the men's team, and one medal in three Olympics for the women's team).
