Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1872, the England team faced off against Scotland in the first international match to be recognised by FIFA. Where was the match held?

Answer: Hamilton Crescent, Glasgow

The match took place on 30 November 1872 and ended in a 0-0 draw in front of a crowd of roughly 4,000 people. In modern times, the ground is used more regularly for cricket and is the home of the West of Scotland Cricket Club.

The Oval did hold five meetings between England and Scotland in the years 1870-1872, but none of these were recognised by FIFA. Neither Hampden Park nor Empire Stadium, the original Wembley, were open at this point. Hampden opened in 1903 while Empire opened in 1923.
2. Which team gave England their first defeat outside of the British Isles?

Answer: Spain

The game in question took place on 15 May 1929 at Madrid's Estadio Metropolitano stadium. Despite an early 2-0 lead for the visitors, Spain won 4-3 thanks to an 82nd minute winner from Severiano Goiburu.

Before air travel became more widespread, England tended to just face off against their fellow British rivals. However, the team did go on its first tour of Europe in 1908, which featured wins over Austria and Hungary.
3. In May 1938, England toured Europe. Their first match was against Germany, which at this point was under Nazi rule. The England players gave the salute to Hitler during the German national anthem with the exception of one player. Who was that player?

Answer: Stan Cullis

As the England players were getting changed, an FA official entered the changing room and instructed the England players to salute Hitler. According to Matthews, "The dressing room erupted. All the England players were livid and totally opposed to this. Eddie Hapgood, normally a respectful and devoted captain, wagged his finger at the official and told him what he could do with the Nazi salute."

As the British government was following a policy of appeasement with Hitler at this time, they were concerned that any diplomatic hiccup could cause a war. Everyone eventually agreed, except Cullis who was subsequently dropped from the team.
4. At the 1950 World Cup, England's first appearance in the competition, the team was stunned by a 1-0 defeat to the USA, which eventually led to the team's elimination. Who scored the USA's goal?

Answer: Joe Gaetjens

Gaetjens scored the only goal of the game. The result was shocking for so many reasons. Not only were England considered the kings of football in post-war international opinion, but the US team was filled with semi-professionals. US coach Bill Jeffrey even admitted before the game that his team had "no chance" against England and the English broadsheet Daily Express even suggested giving the US a 3-0 lead to start with.
5. At the 1954 World Cup Finals, which England player became the first to score two goals in a single World Cup game?

Answer: Ivor Broadis

Broadis and Lofthouse became the first England players to achieve this feat during a 4-4 draw with Belgium in the 1954 group phase. Newcastle United's Broadis scored in the 26th and 63rd minute while Lofthouse scored in the 36th and 91st minute of the game. England reached the quarter-finals of the tournament, losing to defending champions Uruguay 4-2.
6. The World Cup was hosted in England for the first time in 1966. Who was the oldest member of the 1966 squad?

Answer: Ron Flowers

Flowers, who had already been capped 49 times by England by the time the 1966 World Cup began, turned 32 in the summer that England hosted the World Cup. Wilson and Armfield were senior members of the 1966 squad, with Wilson 31 years old and Armfield having recently turned 30. Adamson was not involved in the 1966 team, but he was the oldest member of the 1962 squad that played in the World Cup in Chile. Adamson was never capped by his country.
7. England won their first World Cup after defeating West Germany 4-2 in the 1966 final. Which German player scored the opening goal in the match?

Answer: Helmut Haller

Haller scored in the 12th minute of the match to give the West Germans an early lead. The lead did not last long, with Geoff Hurst equalising just six minutes later for the Three Lions. Martin Peters seemingly won the game with his goal in the 78th minute, but Weber scored with only a minute left to force extra time.

Hurst scored arguably the most controversial goal in World Cup history in the 101st minute, with debate still ongoing as to whether the ball crossed the line when it bounced down off the cross bar and then out into the field of play. Either way, Hurst sealed the trophy and his own hat trick with a goal in the 120th minute. Hurst was the first player to have scored a hat-trick in a World Cup final.
8. Which England manager was the first to give an England cap to a black player?

Answer: Ron Greenwood

Greenwood, manager of England between 1977 and 1982, was the first England manager to do this when he capped Nottingham Forest right back Viv Anderson in a friendly against Czechoslovakia in November 1978. While the selection was controversial (England already had established right backs in Phil Neal and Trevor Cherry), Greenwood denied any claims that Anderson's selection had a political motivation. Anderson went on to make 30 appearances for the national team and was selected to four England squads at major tournaments (1980 World Cup, Euro 1982, 1986 World Cup, Euro 1988).
9. After spending the best part of 15 years in the wilderness, a Gary Lineker-led England made it to the quarter-finals of the 1986 World Cup, where they lost controversially to Argentina. Which two teams did England beat in the tournament?

Answer: Poland and Paraguay

England started the tournament fairly poorly, losing 1-0 to Portugal and drawing 0-0 with Morocco. With England needing a victory over Poland in the final group game to stay in the competition, the Three Lions won 3-0 after a Gary Lineker hat-trick.

In the Round of 16, England clashed with Paraguay, winning 3-0 with a Peter Beardsley goal sandwiched between a Lineker brace. Argentina defeated England 2-1 in the quarter-finals, with Diego Maradona's infamous "Hand of God" goal remaining one of the most controversial moments in World Cup history.
10. The Three Lions made it to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup, but were eliminated in heart-breaking fashion by West Germany in the semi-finals. How many matches did England win within the standard 90 minutes during the tournament?

Answer: 1

Similarly to the 1986 tournament, it took a while for England to get going at the 1990 World Cup. England started with two draws against the Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands. After that, Bobby Robson's side edged Egypt by a 1-0 score to win their group.

A David Platt goal in the last minute of extra-time sealed a 1-0 win over Belgium in the Round of 16. The Three Lions were forced to extra time in the quarter-finals too, defeating Cameroon 3-2. England lost 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw with West Germany in the semi-finals.
11. For English fans, football "came home" as England hosted the 1996 European Championships. Alan Shearer was the top scorer at the tournament with five goals. Before Shearer, how many times had the golden boot winner at a major tournament been a player from the host nation? (World Cup and European Championships only, joint-winners count)

Answer: 8

Before 1996, this had occurred four times at both the World Cup and the European Championships. Ademir of Brazil achieved this at the 1950 World Cup, as did Leonel Sanchez at the 1962 World Cup in Chile. Mario Kempes won the Golden Boot as Argentina won the 1978 tournament, while Salvatore Schillaci achieved the same as Italy narrowly missed out on winning in 1990.

At the European Championships, Francois Heutte (France) was a joint golden boot winner at the 1960 Euros, as was Jesus Maria Pereda (Spain) at the 1964 tournament. Likewise, Michel Platini essentially took over the 1984 European Championships for France while Tomas Brolin was a joint-winner of the top scorer charts at the 1992 European Championships in Sweden.
12. Who was the only member of England's 1998 World Cup squad who was also a part of the 1990 squad?

Answer: David Seaman

Seaman was 26 years old when he was called up to the 1990 squad, alongside veteran goalkeeper Peter Shilton and Rangers keeper Chris Woods. He was only in the squad for the first game, however, after a thumb injury saw him pull out.

By 1998, he was a league-winning goalkeeper for Arsenal and was the clear number one choice for his country. Adams, who was captain of the Arsenal team that had just won the league title, was in the 1998 team but not the 1990 squad. Gascoigne appeared in 1990, but was controversially left out of the 1998 squad. Le Tissier never made it into an England World Cup squad.
13. Which of these four England players made their debut first?

Answer: Frank Lampard

Lampard made his debut in a friendly against Belgium on 10 October 1999. Barry and Gerrard made their debuts in the England shirt in the same game, with both players starting a Euro 2000 warm-up game against Ukraine on 31 May 2000. Cole made his first appearance on 28 March 2001 in a 2002 World Cup qualifier against Albania.
14. In the Round of 16 at the 2006 World Cup, England defeated Ecuador 1-0. After the win, how many different nations had England defeated at the World Cup?

Answer: 20

England's first wins came at the 1950 and 1954 tournaments, defeating Chile in the 1950 group stages and Switzerland at the same stage in 1954. The team then defeated Argentina in 1962, followed by a quarter-final win over them in 1966 and a group stage victory in 2002. The Three Lions also defeated Mexico, France, Portugal and West Germany en route to glory in 1966. (They also defeated France in 1982)

England had group stage victories over Romania and Czechoslovakia in 1970, repeating their victory over the latter in 1982. Kuwait also fell to the Three Lions in 1982. As mentioned before, Poland and Paraguay lost to England in 1986, whlie England notched their first victories against Egypt, Belgium and Cameroon in 1990. Group stage wins followed against Tunisia and Colombia in 1998, while Denmark fell in the Round of 16 in 2002. Trinidad and Tobago were the 19th team to fall to England on the big stage during the 2006 group stages, with Ecuador becoming the 20th.
15. Despite being in the middle of what many described as a golden generation of English talent, England failed to qualify for the 2008 European Championships, finishing third in their qualifying group behind Croatia and Russia. Before Steve McClaren, England's manager during the failed campaign, who had been the last previous England manager to fail to take the Three Lions to a European Championship?

Answer: Sir Bobby Robson

England's campaign started fairly brightly, thrashing Andorra 5-0 and winning 1-0 away from home against Macedonia. The bad results were not too far away however. Strange draws at home to Macedonia and away at Israel, combined with away losses against qualification rivals in Croatia and Russia, left England needing a point at home to Croatia in their final qualifier. England lost 3-2 and were eliminated in qualification. McClaren was quickly sacked after becoming the first manager since Sir Bobby Robson in 1984 to fail to lead England to the European Championships.

While Ramsey (1964, 1972) and Revie (1976) did both fail to take England to the Euros, this occurred before Robson's tenure. Before McClaren, Taylor had been the last England manager to fail to take the Three Lions to a major tournament. (1994 World Cup)
16. England suffered arguably the most humiliating loss in their history at Euro 2016 when they were eliminated by Iceland in the Round of 16. Where did their opponents rank in the FIFA World Rankings heading into the match?

Answer: 34th

The tournament had already started shakily for England and manager Roy Hodgson. The Three Lions had only finished second in their group after draws with Russia and Slovakia (they did defeat Wales however). Against Iceland, Wayne Rooney scored a fourth minute penalty to give England the lead - but by the 18th minute the team was 2-1 down after goals from Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson. The game ended 2-1.

The population of Iceland at the time was 332,000 and the population of England was 55 million.

England's performance was chastised by England fans and media, with many furious at the lack of passion on show, the poor level of performance compared to the players' club form and a general sense of arrogance within the team. Manager Roy Hodgson resigned on the same day.
17. At the 2018 World Cup, England finally ended their cursed run in penalty shootouts by defeating Colombia after a 1-1 draw. During that game, Colombia had a late equaliser to force extra time. What was interesting about the Colombia goal?

Answer: The scorer and the England goalkeeper were future teammates

After a goalless first half, Harry Kane scored a 57th minute penalty to give the Three Lions a 1-0 lead. However, in the third minute of stoppage time, a corner saw Colombia equalise through defender Yerry Mina's header. The England goalkeeper, Everton's Jordan Pickford, was unable to keep out Mina's effort. Mina joined the Toffees from Barcelona a month after the game took place.

Every England fan was certain they knew the outcome when the game went to penalties. After both teams scored their opening two kicks, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson missed his kick, with Colombia taking a 3-2 lead. However, misses from Andres Uribe and Carlos Bacca, paired with successful kicks from Kieran Trippier and Eric Dier, saw England win their first knockout game (4-3 on penalties) at a major tournament since the 2006 World Cup. England eventually were eliminated in the semi-finals, losing 2-1 in extra time to Croatia.
18. After the 2018 World Cup, what was England's win-loss record in penalty shootouts at major tournaments? (World Cup and European Championships only)

Answer: 2-6

England had compiled 1-3 records at both the World Cup and the European Championships. At the 1990 World Cup, England lost the semi-finals to West Germany after Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle missed from the spot. This trend continued in 1998 and 2006, losing to Argentina and Portugal respectively. The 2018 win against Colombia was England's first on the World Cup stage.

England lost another semi-final to Germany at Euro 1996 after Gareth Southgate missed from 12 yards. Euro 2004 and Euro 2012 saw quarter-final losses to Portugal after David Beckham and Darius Vassell missed and Italy after Ashley Young and Ashley Cole missed. England's only win at the Euros on penalties came in the quarter-finals of Euro 1996 against Spain.
19. Which of these players made the most appearances for England while playing for a single non-English club?

Answer: Owen Hargreaves

Hargreaves played 39 times for England between 2001 and 2007 while he was playing for Bayern Munich. He only made three appearances for his country after joining Manchester United in 2007. While Beckham, capped 115 times by his country, played 50 times for the Three Lions while at Real Madrid and LA Galaxy between 2003 and 2007, the most caps he had while at one single foreign club was 36 (Real Madrid).

Keegan played 25 times for England during his time at Hamburg between 1977 and 1980. Lineker, a Barcelona player between 1986 and 1989, played 24 times for England during this span.
20. In November 2019, England played their 1000th official game in a victory over Montenegro. According to BBC research, which club provided the most England players in the history of the national team?

Answer: Tottenham Hotspur

Of the 1,244 players to have been capped by England at the time, 78 of them had been Tottenham players when they were selected. Liverpool and Aston Villa were tied for the second most players, each having supplied 74 England internationals. Everton had the fourth most with 68 while Manchester United round off the top five with 67. Arsenal (63), Manchester City (49), Chelsea (49), Blackburn Rovers (48) and West Bromwich Albion (44) round off the top ten.

There are some fascinating facts surrounding England's first 1000 games. AC Milan and Real Madrid (4) were the foreign clubs with the most England players while 58 of the 92 clubs in England's top four divisions at the time had each provided at least one England player.
