Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Open returned to the home of golf, St Andrews, in 2010. Which unheralded South African golfer won his first major with a resounding seven stroke victory over Lee Westwood?

Answer: Louis Oosthuizen

Oosthuizen had only ever made one cut in his previous major career so certainly wasn't one of the favourties at the start of play. An opening 65 saw him trail Rory McIlroy by two shots, but, with the Northern Irishman having a disastrous Friday, Oosthuizen shot 67 to lead by five strokes over Mark Calcavecchia at the halfway mark.

He never looked like collapsing over the weekend, and closing scores of 69 and 71 saw him lift the Claret Jug.
2. The 2011 championship at Sandwich saw which 42-year-old win his first Claret Jug, at the 20th attempt?

Answer: Darren Clarke

Clarke, from Northern Ireland, had finished in the top 10 on three previous Open visits, but it looked like the main prize had passed him by until he arrived at Royal St George's in 2011. Three sub-70 rounds saw him tee off on Sunday with a single stroke lead over Dustin Johnson. A final round of 70 was enough for a three stroke victory over Johnson and Phil Mickelson.
3. Which golfer won his first Open title for a decade at Royal Lytham in 2012?

Answer: Ernie Els

Els had previously won the title at Muirfield in 2002 but came to Royal Lytham in 2012 having failed to make the cut in his previous two Opens. Australian Adam Scott looked to have the tournament in his pocket, taking a four-shot lead into the final round, but a disappointing 75 saw him overtaken by Els, who shot 68 to lift the Claret Jug by a single shot.
4. Muirfield 2013 - Which American golfer won his first Claret Jug?

Answer: Phil Mickelson

Mickelson had had a chequered Open career up until 2013, with a couple of top three finishes and a few missed cuts. At Muirfield, he started the final round five shots behind Lee Westwood. Whilst the Englishman fell away with a 75 on the Sunday, Mickelson shot a 66 to win the title by three shots from Henrik Stenson.
5. The 2014 Open was held at Royal Liverpool and resulted in a wire-to-wire victory for which European golfer?

Answer: Rory McIlroy

McIlroy already had a US Open and PGA title on his CV when he arrived at Royal Liverpool in 2014. He opened with a 66 and added further rounds of 66, 68 and 71 to win by two strokes from Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler. He became the first wire-to-wire winner (i.e. lead the championship after every round) since Tiger Woods in 2005.
6. The Open returned to St Andrews in 2015, with the title being decided by a three-man play-off. Which one of these golfers was *not* involved in the final shoot-out?

Answer: Jason Day

Day and Oosthuizen were joint leaders after the third round alongside Irish amateur Paul Dunne, with Johnson and Leishman three shits back. Dunne fell away on the Sunday, but Leishman and Johnson both shot 66 to tie Oosthuizen who shot 69, whilst Day's 70 was one too many. The four-hole play-off saw Johnson triumph to lift his first Claret Jug.
7. The 2016 Open at Royal Troon saw a first-ever champion from which country?

Answer: Sweden

Henrik Stenson of Sweden was involved in a head-to-head shoot-out with Phil Mickelson over the weekend. An amazing final round score of 63 by Stenson saw him edge out Mickelson, who himself carded a 65. He was the first golfer from Scandinavia to lift the Claret Jug (or any major for that matter). His 20-under-par score for the four rounds set a new Open record.
8. At Royal Birkdale in 2017, which American led or jointly-led after all four rounds to win his first Open title?

Answer: Jordan Spieth

Spieth, who had triumphed in both the Masters and US Open in 2015, was joint-leader with Kuchar and Koepka after the first round. By the start of the final round, he led Kuchar by three strokes. He made a bad start on the Sunday to allow his fellow-American to draw level, but picked up five shots on holes 14 through 17 to ease to victory.
9. The 2018 Championship at Carnoustie resulted in a first title for a player from which country?

Answer: Italy

Francesco Molinari of Italy had finished second in the 2017 PGA Championship, his best major result up until that date. At Carnoustie, he trailed the leaders by three strokes gong into Sunday's final round, but shot a bogey-free 69 to win the title by two shots. It was the first victory in a major for an Italian player.
10. Shane Lowry of Ireland won the 2019 Open at which course in Northern Ireland, which was hosting the Open for the first time since 1951?

Answer: Royal Portrush

Royal Portrush hosted the Open for the first time in 68 years, and it proved to be a resounding success, with all tickets being sold in advance for the first time ever. Lowry, roared on by a passionate home crowd, led Tommy Fleetwood by four shots going into the final round, and a 72 in tricky weather conditions on the Sunday saw him triumph by six shots.
