Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Two teams, eleven players on each, and one chequered ball.

Answer: Football/Soccer

Association football, or soccer as it may be known in some regions, is one of the world's most popular sporting events. Played on a pitch, the game involves two teams with eleven members on each side (one goalkeeper and ten other players) as they attempt to kick a ball into the opposing net to score a point.

The match is played across ninety minutes though this can be extended to additional time or penalty shootouts if need-be. The largest event in the sport is generally the FIFA World Cup, played every four years between the world's top teams.
2. Two players, a net, a pair of rackets, and a feathered projectile.

Answer: Badminton

Played on a court, this one-vs-one or two-vs-two net game is played with rackets and a feathered target known as a shuttlecock. The aim of the game is to bat the shuttlecock over the net, much like in tennis, with the aim to avoid letting it drop on your side.

A sport of precision and dexterity, it relies on players' quick movements partly because a shuttlecock, unlike a ball, slows itself down due to its feathers. It was introduced as an Olympic sport in 1992 though it's been played for hundreds of years.
3. Two teams, six players on each, a net, and a large ball.

Answer: Volleyball

Although volleyball can be played informally with a smaller amount of people on each side of the net, traditional volleyball is a twelve-person game with six people on each team filling in different parts of a court aiming, like in badminton or tennis, to avoid having their ball hit the ground. Unlike many sports, volleyball is also a popular beach activity with beach volleyball (often played with two people on each side of a net) becoming an Olympic sport in 1996.
4. Two players, a net, a pair of rackets, and a small ball.

Answer: Tennis

Played in singles and doubles, tennis is a quintessentially difficult sport to master due to its reliance on both power and precision. In this one, you use a racket to lob a ball over a net on a regulation court. The aim is to ensure that you don't let the ball hit the ground on your side more than once while hitting it back over to your opponent with your racket.

The catch is that the court is massive, so covering that ground can be difficult. This sport is played internationally on a variety of court types including grass, clay, and hardcourt (like concrete).
5. Some players, a small ball, some clubs and a tee.

Answer: Golf

Golf is unlike most sports in that while it has definitive rules, it does not play on a standardized field, pitch, or court. Instead, players use one of many clubs to strike a small ball and send it across a course with the aim of placing it in a small hole in as few strokes as possible. Courses can be quite long (at eighteen holes for regulation), and because of their size, they vary between one another and around the world.
6. Two teams, six players on each, ice skates, sticks, and a vulcanized rubber puck.

Answer: Hockey

Though hockey is also playable in a field or on a flat surface internationally, ice hockey is a sport popularized in northern countries with Canada, the United States, and Russia taking the charge on top teams. Twelve people, at a maximum, are on the rink at any given time, and the goal is to skate around with long sticks, aiming to knock a puck into the opposing team's net (though it's generally guarded by a goalie). Games are played in three twenty-minute periods which, if there's a tie, go into overtime.
7. Numerous participants and forty-two-point-two kilometres of running.

Answer: Marathon

One of the classic Olympic sports, the marathon is also likely the most accessible of those on the list here as it can be completed by anyone with mobility (there are even wheelchair marathons). Though running the full 42.2 kilometre distance requires a significant amount of training, it's an endurance feat that thousands upon thousands will achieve year over year, with many of the top athletes running multiple in a short timespan.
8. Two teams, eleven players on each, and an oblong ball.

Answer: American Football

Although football nearly everywhere else in the world refers to what Americans would call soccer, there is also a football played combining many elements of soccer with rugby. One of the most lucrative sports in the U.S., this game is a complex one, requiring that eleven players on both teams maneuver an oblong ball across the opponent's end-zone.

In Canada, the rules differ more; Canadian football has teams of twelve, for instance. Perhaps the largest American football event, and one of the most famous sporting events in the world, is the Superbowl.
9. Two teams of five players, two raised hoops, and a large, orange ball.

Answer: Basketball

Held on a court (either indoor on treated wood or outdoors on cement), the game of basketball requires that five players on each team work together to maneuver a bouncy, round ball and toss it into a raised net hanging ten feet high on the opposing end of the playing area.

There are additional rules, however, indicating how many steps can be taken with the ball in possession, and more points can be given depending on the distance of a successful dunk.
10. Two players, a table with green cloth, fifteen red balls, one yellow, one brown, one green, one blue, one pink, one black, and one white ball. Oh yeah, and a pair of cues.

Answer: Snooker

Lot of moving parts, eh? Snooker is a table game played on a green-clothed surface not unlike pool. The aim is to use the white cue ball and, with cues, strike the coloured balls into the table's pockets in a determinable order to score points. Games are played in frames, so two opponents might go head-to-head in a series of games to determine a best-of score. Pool, adversely, is played with one white cue ball and fifteen numbered solid-coloured and striped balls with different rules altogether.
