They only managed the Second Round of the League Cup, and then the same team beat them 4-0 at Prenton Park.

With expectations high for this match, Tranmere fans thought that they were going to turn over the Premiership outfit again. But a hat-trick from Brett Ormerod and inputs from Marsden, Fernandes and Svensson, ensured that Allen's goal was no more than a consulation.

Iain Hume scored a 30-yard strike after less than a minute in the first half of extra-time at the Reebok in Round 3. In fact, it happened so quickly that most of the cameras missed the strike. However, Tranmere fans were treated to an almost identical strike when Swansea came to Prenton Park when Iain Hume unleashed from the same distance in the second half to put Tranmere 2-1 up, a goal which proved decisive.

The first match was shown live on BBC One. The replay was remembered for a quite remarkable goal from Millwall's Neil Harris, which was classed as one of the goals of the competition. Millwall went on to face Sunderland in the semi-finals before being humbled, 4-0, by Manchester United in the final. Tranmere was knocked out in the first round of the League Cup this season by Nottingham Forest on penalties, and also were beaten in the first round of the Football Trophy by Blackpool at Bloomfield Road 3-2.

The FA Cup campaign didn't last that long which on recent performances was quite interesting for Tranmere.

They couldn't manage to get past the First Round where Peterborough knocked them down with a 2-1 victory at home.

22 penalties were taken in all until the duty came upon both teams goalkeepers. Tranmere's stand-in goalkeeper Steven Wilson, put his strike wide, leaving Carlise goalkeeper Simon Grand to cooly slot away his spot-kick to send Carlisle through.
