We Need to Talk About Kevin Trivia Quiz

No, this is not about the Lionel Shriver novel! It's about Kevin Campbell. He's one of my favourite footballers of all time, so I decided I'd write a quiz about him.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start at the beginning. What is Kevin Campbell's date of birth?

Answer: 4 February 1970

Campbell was born in the London borough of Lambeth, and Arsenal were his boyhood team. He joined Arsenal as a schoolboy in 1985. (For Arsenal fans playing this quiz: 3 November 1963 is Ian Wright's date of birth, 24 August 1967 is Michael Thomas' and 2 May 1967 is the late David Rocastle's.)
2. Campbell played for the England U21 side, but was he ever capped for the main team?

Answer: No

Believe it or not, the answer is no (and this honestly surprised me when I found out)! Campbell was capped for the now defunct England B team, but unlike many other Arsenal players at the time, he was never picked for the main squad. He is one of the few English players to have scored a large number of goals in the Premier League without ever being capped for his country (notwithstanding the four caps he received as a U21 player).
3. In 1988, Campbell won his first trophy, the FA Youth Cup, with Arsenal. Who were their opponents?

Answer: Doncaster Rovers

Until 2018, the FA Youth Cup was played over two legs. Arsenal hammered Doncaster 5-0 in the first leg and drew 1-1 with them in the second, winning 6-1 on aggregate. Besides Campbell, the Arsenal youth squad also included Neil Heaney, who would go on to play for Southampton, and Steve Morrow, who would go on to be a regular fixture in Arsenal's first team until 1997. Campbell scored a hat-trick in the first leg, and was one of the team's most prolific scorers in the tournament in general.
4. Which of these trophies did Campbell NOT win during his time with Arsenal?

Answer: Champions' League

Campbell made his first team debut for Arsenal against Everton in 1988, and stayed with Arsenal until 1995, during which time he also had loan spells with Leicester City and Leyton Orient. In the days before the Premier League, he was part of the Arsenal squad that won the First Division under George Graham in 1991.

He started for Arsenal in the European Cup Winners' Cup final against Parma in 1994. Campbell was also part of Arsenal's line-up in the 1993 FA Cup final against Sheffield Wednesday, both in the original match and in the replay, which Arsenal won 2-1.
5. For which club did Campbell sign in 1995 after his departure from Arsenal?

Answer: Nottingham Forest

Frank Clark's Nottingham Forest signed Campbell. Clark had taken an interest in Campbell after Campbell played under him while on loan to Leyton Orient. Although they were relegated in 1997 after a disastrous season, they clawed their way back up to the Premier League the following season under Dave Bassett. Campbell played his part in Forest's promotion, scoring 23 goals in the 1997-1998 season. During that time, he was partnered with Dutch striker Pierre van Hooijdonk and the two made an excellent combination on the pitch.
6. 1998-1999 was the first season in which Campbell played for a club outside the UK. For which Turkish club did he play?

Answer: Trabzonspor

Campbell had little say in Forest's decision to sell him to Trabzonspor, and Pierre van Hooijdonk was reportedly so annoyed about his striking partner being sold that he went on strike. While Campbell was at Trabzonspor, club president Mehmet Ali Yilmaz called him a 'cannibal who calls himself a striker' and 'discoloured'.

At the time, Campbell was angered by the comment, although he has since stated that it was lost in translation. Campbell was greatly liked by both players and fans, and Trabzonspor captains Ogün Temizkanoglu and Abdullah Ercan supported him during his final press conference.
7. Which Everton manager, who died in October 2021, signed Campbell in 1999?

Answer: Walter Smith

Campbell initially started at Everton as a loan player in March 1999, when they were struggling near the bottom of the Premier League table, but signed for the club officially later that year. Everton had been going through a bad patch, with the unpopular chairman Peter Johnson resigning after an argument with Smith over the sale of Duncan Ferguson to Newcastle (although Ferguson would return in 2000). Campbell was Everton's top goalscorer in the 1998-1999 season, with nine goals. On hearing of Smith's death in 2021, Campbell paid tribute to him, thanking Smith for bringing him to Everton.
8. Campbell was a prolific scorer during his time at Everton, playing alongside the likes of Wayne Rooney and Duncan Ferguson. Against which team, who Everton would not beat at home again until 2021, did he score the winning goal in 1999?

Answer: Liverpool

Campbell was Everton's top goalscorer in the 1999-2000 season. During his time with the club, he became one of the club's all-time highest goalscorers, along with Duncan Ferguson and later arrivals Romelu Lukaku and Tim Cahill. One of his highlights was scoring a hat trick in a 6-0 victory against West Ham (I was there!), but he would also be remembered by Everton fans for scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Merseyside Derby at Anfield.

It was the last time for many years that Everton would win on enemy territory, until their 2-0 victory in the 2020-2021 season under Carlo Ancelotti. Campbell was also the first black player to captain Everton when he took on the role in the 2001-2002 season.

However, injury problems dogged him during his later years at Everton and he left the club in 2005, joining West Bromwich Albion.
9. Outside of football, which musician was Campbell involved with in a legal dispute in 2004, over the release of an album?

Answer: Mark Morrison

Campbell is a big music fan and briefly ran a record label, 2 Wikid, though he later gave it up to focus on football. One of the artists signed to it was Mark Morrison, who had a Number 1 hit on the UK singles chart in 1996 with 'Return of the Mack'. Campbell found himself involved in a dispute with Morrison when Morrison attempted to release his album 'Innocent Man' through another distribution company, Jet Star.

Although Campbell issued an injunction against Morrison, Morrison ultimately won the case. Campbell was not happy about Morrison's actions, saying he had always dreamed of going into the music business, but that Morrison had ruined it for him, especially after 2 Wikid had put a lot of time and money into the album.
10. Footballing talent runs in the Campbell family. What is the name of Kevin's son, who joined Stoke City in 2016 as a youth player?

Answer: Tyrese

Tyrese Campbell grew up in Cheshire, and initially played for Manchester City as a youth player, but moved to Stoke City in 2016. During his time as a youth player, he was a prolific goalscorer (just like his dad). Manager Paul Lambert was impressed with his performances and promoted him to the first team in 2018, where he made his debut against Leicester City as a sub.

He had his first starting appearance against Shrewsbury Town (to whom he was later loaned) in an FA Cup game in 2019, in which he scored both goals for Stoke, although they lost 3-2. Campbell's younger brother Kyle is also a footballer, who entered the first team at Northern Premier League club Buxton in 2019. (The other answers are a reference to the Wright-Phillips family; Bradley and Shaun Wright-Phillips are Ian Wright's sons, and D'Margio Wright-Phillips is Bradley's son.)
