FC Nantes were founded in 1943 and their nickname refers to their yellow shirts. They won their first championship in 1965 and their first Coupe de France in 1979. In season 1995-96, they reached the semi-finals of the European Champions League, where they lost narrowly to Italian giants Juventus.

Montpellier HSC were founded in 1919 under their original name of Stade Olympique Montepellerain. They won the Coupe de France in 1929, but spent most of the next few decades yo-yoing between the first and second divisions. The appointment of Girad as manager in 2009 saw the team become serious challengers for honours, and a first-ever league title was won in 2012.

Founded in 1931, Stade de Reims were one of the leading French clubs of the 1950s. Their 1954-55 league title access saw them qualify for the first edition of the European Champions Cup. They made it all the way to the final in Paris, losing to Real Madrid.

They reached the final again in 1959, with Real once again being the team who defeated them. Six-times French champions between 1949 and 1962, Reims saw their fortunes decline sharply in the mid 1960s, with much of the next five decades spent outside the top flight.

The appointment of Bernard Tapie as club president in 1986 saw the club attract numerous star players from home and abroad, and they dominated French football in the late 1980s/early 90s.

In 1993, they reached the final of the European Champions League, beating AC Milan in the final. A match-fixing scandal shortly afterwards saw them demoted to the second division and they didn't win another major honour until they won the league in 2010.

Lille OSC were formed in 1944 by the merger of Olympique Lillois and SC Fives. In the first decade of their existence they won two league titles and five French cups. The club then faded into relative obscurity until the early 21st century when they became regular entrants in the European Champions League and Europa League.
