Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. DENMARK. Denmark beat Uruguay 6-1 in the group phase. Preben Elkjaer scored three goals, with Soeren Lerby and Michael Laudrup scoring one goal each. Who scored the last goal for Denmark, in the 88th minute?

Answer: Jesper Olsen

In group phase Denmark also beat Scotland (1-0) and West-Germany (2-0). Denmark became then one of the favourites. Their fans were known as "Roligans". In the next round Denmark lost to Spain and Emilio Butragueno (four goals) 1-5.
2. BRAZIL. Brazil beat Northern Ireland 3-0 in group phase. Which Brazilian defender made the famous goal against Pat Jennings and put Brazil further ahead 2-0?

Answer: Josimar

Careca scored Brazil's two other goals. Josimar's spectacular goal was shot from 30 meters to the upper right corner of the goal. P{at Jennings ended his international career in this game with a world record 119th cap, on his 41st birthday.
3. FRANCE. A classic quarterfinal against Brazil ended after extra time 1-1. France won the penalty shoot-out 4-3. Who scored the last and decisive penalty for France?

Answer: Luis Fernandez

Careca for Brazil 1-0, Platini for France 1-1 in normal time. In the shoot-out, Brazilians Socrates and Julio Cesar failed. France's Platini also failed. France went on to lose 0-2 to West-Germany in Semi-Final, and beat Belgium 4-2 in bronze medal match.
4. WEST GERMANY. West-Germany beat home team Mexico in the quarter-finals by penalty shoot-out. Who scored the decisive penalty for West-Germany?

Answer: Pierre Litbarski

Of course none of the German players failed the penalty and this was one of the many German shoot-out victories. Unfortunately for Germany there was no shoot-out needed in the final, which Germany lost 2-3 to Argentina.
5. ARGENTINA. Who were the three Argentinians who scored in the Final against West-Germany?

Answer: Brown, Valdano, Burruchaga

Brown 1-0, Valdano 2-0, Rummenigge 2-1, Voeller 2-2, Burruchaga 3-2.
6. BELGIUM. In quarter-final match against Spain the full time score was 1-1. Who put Belgium into the lead 1-0, with a header past the Spanish goal-keeper Antonio Zubizarreta?

Answer: Jan Ceulemans

Spain equalised in the 84th minute through Senore, but Belgium progressed to the semi-finals after penalty shoot-out and was then eliminated by a 0-2 loss to Argentina (Diego Maradona scored both goals). Belgium was the biggest surprise in the games.
7. BULGARIA. The opening match against Italy was 1-1. Altobelli scored first to make it 1-0 for Italy. Who equalised for Bulgaria with a header 5 minutes before full time?

Answer: Nasko Sirakov

Bulgaria still didn't get their first win in the World Cup (it came later in 1994). Other matches in group phases for Bulgaria were 1-1 against South-Korea, and 0-2 against Argentina. Nonetheless they progressed to the 2nd round, where they lost 0-2 against the home team, Mexico.
8. PORTUGAL. Portugal shocked England in their first match by winning 1-0. Who scored the only goal?

Answer: Carlos Manuel

Even with this first up win over England, the '86 World Cup wasn't a big success for Portugal. In other group phase matches Portugal lost 0-1 to Poland, and 1-3 to Morocco and was sent out from the games.
9. ENGLAND. In second round game England beat Paraguay 3-0. Gary Lineker scored twice. Who else scored for England?

Answer: Peter Beardsley

Everyone remembers England's quarter-final defeat 1-2 to Argentina when Diego Maradona made two goals (one of which was "The Hand of God", and the other an almighty goal from a run near the half-way line). Gary Lineker made England's only goal in that game and was the best scorer in Mexico with six goals.
10. ITALY. Only two men scored for Italy at Mexico '86. One was Altobelli, who was the other one?

Answer: Kwang-rae

Altobelli scored once against Bulgaria (1-1) and Argentina (1-1) and twice against South-Korea (3-2). The third goal against South-Korea was own goal by Kwang-rae. Defending champion then barely made it to the second round and faced European champion France. Italy was knocked out 2-0.
