Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Don Larsen threw the first World Series perfect game in history. Which year did this happen?

Answer: 1956

Larsen was a Yankee in 1956. This was his greatest season, although he went only 11-5 and whiffed 107 batters. Those were both career highs for Don. The only statistic that Larsen led the league in during his career was when he lost 21 games for the Orioles in 1954.
2. In which year was the famous "Earthquake Series"?

Answer: 1989

The 'Earthquake Series' saw the bay area Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants go at it. Oakland had rocked the Giants 5-0 and 5-1 in games one and two before mother nature rocked them both during game three on October 17. The series was delayed for 10 days, then Oakland continued to shake the Giants to win the series, four games to none.

The Athletics outscored the Giants, 32 runs to 14.
3. Which team won the first ever Major League World Series game?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

The first series pitted Boston of the AL and Pittsburgh of the NL in 1903. Although the Pirates and pitcher Deacon Phillippe won the first game, Boston won the series five games to three.
4. Which of the following was never a World Series MVP?

Answer: Ernie Banks

Banks played his entire career for the Chicago Cubs. Although he hit 512 home runs in his career, he played for the Cubs from 1953-1966, then from 1969-1971. The Cubs never saw a World Series while he was on the roster.
5. All the following except which manager took his team to a World Series?

Answer: Gene Mauch

Stengel led this group with ten appearances with the Yankees. Mack took his Philadelphia Athletics to nine. Yogi took the Yankees and Mets to the World Series one time each. It was Gene Mauch, who managed for 26 years with four teams, compiled 1902 wins. The closest that Mauch ever came was when he took the California Angels to a division title twice, but never moved beyond that.
6. In which of the following seasons was World Series played?

Answer: 1943

The 1943 series was a repeat of the previous season that pitted the Yankees against the Cardinals, but in 1942, the Yankees were victorious. The first World Series was not played until 1903. There was no World Series in 1904, and 1994 was a strike season.
7. Three of the following teams made their first World Series appearance in the 1980s. Which franchise had already been there prior?

Answer: Philadelphia Phillies

1980 saw the Philadelphia Phillies win their first World Series in the history of the franchise. They previously went to the series in 1950 and 1915. The Brewers began their franchise as the Seattle Pilots in 1969. In 1970, they were planted in Milwaukee.

Their first series appearance was in 1982 when they went up against the NL champion St. Louis Cardinals. St. Louis won that series four games to three. The Kansas City Royals also appeared in their first World Series in 1980, but lost to the Phillies.

The Padres also appeared in their first series in 1984, but lost to the Tigers.
8. Despite having a 82-79 record in the National League in 1973, this team made a trip to the World Series. Which team was it?

Answer: New York Mets

The others were all American League teams. The Mets defeated the 99-63 Cincinnati Reds in the NLCS, then went on to meet Oakland in the World Series. The Mets did not have one starter bat over .290 in the season, had nobody hit 25 home runs, and even lacked a 20-game winner. With all that, they still went to the series with Yogi Berra at the helm, but lost to the Athletics.
9. Some may know that Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Duke Snider, and Gene Tenace each hit four home runs in a World Series. Who hit five home runs in one series?

Answer: Reggie Jackson

Reggie hit five in the 1977 World Series against the Dodgers. Three of those shots came in game six. Jackson's Yankees won the series four games to two. Earning the nickname "Mr. October", Jackson hit ten World Series home runs in his five appearances.
10. The St. Louis Cardinals appeared in their 17th World Series in 2006. Which teams did they have to defeat in the playoffs to get there?

Answer: Padres / Mets

The Mets defeated the Dodgers in their NLDS three games to none, while the Cardinals put away the Padres three games to one. In a showdown, the Cardinals beat the Mets in the NLCS for a ticket to the World Series against the Tigers in 2006.
