Kate looked through the victim's work and noted how he seemed to investigate unethical activity with some major players. She realized that one of his cases involved investigating a hospital that was cited as potentially committing Medicare fraud. Much of Paul's investigations entailed public contracts so the team was not surprised that Paul would oversaw allegations of private entities defrauding Medicare.

Kevin was able to get a trace on the last phone call that was made to Paul's phone. The person who contacted Paul was an Occupy Wall Street activist by the name of Jared Stone. The team deduced that Jared contacted Paul to see if he would investigate corrupt activity at a local bank.

Javier noticed Jared Stone walking towards a subway so he went to follow him. He managed to get on the same train as Jared and hoped he could talk to him to find out information about Paul's death. However, Jared ended up taking a gun from a nearby police officer and held a bunch of people hostage on the train.

Marisa Aragon was a police officer who was ticketing someone on the same subway that Jared Stone and Javier were riding. It was her gun which Jared stole so he could take the other passengers hostage. During this time, Marisa and Javier befriended one another while being held hostage on the train. Jared got on the phone with a hostage negotiator midway through the show. When the negotiator asked him what his list of demands were, he insisted that Erin Wilson be released from prison. As James had been infected by the flu virus, this explained why he was in contact with Paul.
