Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the captain of the Fireball XL-5?

Answer: Colonel Steve Zodiac

Doctor Venus often said that Colonel Zodiac was the 'greatest astronaut in the Space Patrol', and she was probably right. The dashing, square-jawed commander saved the Earth, and the Galaxy, on numerous occasions.
2. What specialized degree did Doctor Venus hold?

Answer: Doctor of Space Medicine

For all her learning, Venus always ended up acting like a stereotypical television female most of the time - ready at a moment's notice to be captured by the bad guy or fall and twist an ankle while fleeing a menacing creature.
3. What exactly did the crew use in order to live in outer space when they needed to go outside the ship?

Answer: Oxygen pills

Oxygen pills naturally eliminated the need for a second set of puppets decked out in space suits, however illogical they may have been - apparently Gerry Anderson and crew didn't realize that a lack of oxygen was only half the battle ... the lack of pressure in a vacuum does interesting things to a human body as well.
4. What precious metal could be found in abundance on the world ruled by Bizan?

Answer: Platinum

Bizan ruled Platonia, where literally millions of tons of platinum could be found. In "Planet of Platonia", Steve and the Fireball XL-5 crew had to protect Bizan from an assassin.
5. What was the name of the robot that was on board the the Fireball XL-5?

Answer: Robert

Robert the Robot was one of the more unique mechanical helpers, as his body was almost completely transparent and you could see all of his working parts. An interesting design even compared to the high-tech robots of today's science fiction.
6. What is the name of the burgeoning metropolis that the World Space Headquarters called home?

Answer: Space City

Space City was also unique in that it could 'hide' itself underground for protection (flipping and turning and compacting much of the city's surface until it was prepared for almost any attack).
7. What was the name of the chief scientist on board the Fireball XL-5?

Answer: Professor Matic

Professor Matic was your standard-issue, absent-minded, professor-type, who usually got back his senses just in time to come up with an idea for Steve and Venus to use to save the ship and usually the galaxy.
8. In the first episode, what was the name of the race of beings who fired several missles carrying Planetomic bombs at Earth?

Answer: The Subterreans

The Subterreans fired the rockets from their diamond-lined caverns on Planet 46. Each missle was a million times more powerful than a hydrogen bombs. After Steve and the XL-5 crew stopped the first one, the Subterreans started sending rockets guided in flight by pilots on suicide missions. Luckily, our heroes were able to stop them with little loss of life - on either side.
9. What antique device did Professor Matic carry with him on board the Fireball XL-5?

Answer: An alarm clock

The alarm clock, a 1962 model, was over one hundred years old!
10. What planet launched the hypnotic spheres that caused the Fireball XL-5 considerable trouble?

Answer: Sivana

The hypnotic spheres were being used to force tankers, merchant vessels and other ships to change course and land on Sivana. The planet was ruled by a creature that looked like a giant brain. Steve damaged the creature's heating system, causing it to die from the extreme cold of the faraway planet.
