Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As everybody who ever visited a certain Swedish furniture store knows: the Swedes love their meatballs! Sadly, the chef's meatballs turn out to be less than perfect. Not one to be defended, he uses them as what?

Answer: Tennis balls

Produced 1976. Episode's guest star: Connie Stevens

The meatballs turn out to be a bit bouncy. Like every good cook, the chef has a tennis racket in the kitchen. He serves some of the meatballs into the audience. Statler strangely has a racket of his own and returns the impromptu ball. "Fifteen, love!" judges Waldorf.

Was this the secret to the success of players like Borg and Edberg?
2. The chef prepares flapjacks (pancakes). A swift swing out of the wrist- and they stick to the ceiling. What auxiliary item helps him to get them down again?

Answer: Blunderbuss

Produced 1976. Episode's guest star: Rita Moreno.

It works. But I guess they have a slight aftertaste of gunpowder.
3. Sometimes our chef loves to prepare international food. Which Italian food staple fights its consummation - and how?

Answer: Spaghetti attacks his throat

Produced 1976. Episode's guest star: Lena Horne.

A pile of spaghetti is on a plate. The chef turns his back to it to prepare the sauce. The pasta tries to sneak away. The chef forces it back on the plate. This is the moment the spaghetti attacks his throat.

I've never seen spaghetti looking like a furious lap dog - except in this case.
Maybe penne is more peaceful?
4. One of the chef's most delicious recipes is a chocolate cake with cream and fruit. The chef adds cream and fruit to a chocolate cake, but as he tries to cut it, the cake opposes this in Japanese language. The chef solves this by the use of a"cakenschmooscher". What item is this thing for the most of us?

Answer: Baseball bat

Produced 1976. Episode's guest star: Valerie Harper.

A rolling pin would be a good choice for a baker. Even a kanabo, a Japanese war club, might be an expected choice. But the chef prefers a baseball bat. The cake is flat like a pancake after this treatment. A sledgehammer couldn't be that effective!

As every watcher of Mary Berry does know, a real cake smoother is used to spread icing, cream or ganache on the cake.
5. As you might know, in a non-vegan kitchen a lot of eggs are needed. The chef is in the lucky position of having a chicken in the kitchen. Perhaps not that lucky. This chicken is a stubborn chicken. What does that one lay? I'm talking about two different events. Nothing you might expect.

Answer: A bomb and ping-pong balls

Produced in 1977. Guest stars: Bernadette Peters (bomb) and Elton John (ping-pong balls)

Both times the chef threatens the chicken with a cleaver. The first time the chicken produces a little black bomb. The next time eggs are in want, he only gets ping-pong balls. At least the color is right this time and neither chef nor chicken were hurt. But alas: no "Egg der Chef"
6. Coconut is not a common ingredient in the Swedish kitchen. So it might be a surprise to see the chef opening one with a hammer and saw. Alas, what does he find in that coconut? Not a nice surprise.

Answer: A bomb

Produced 1977. Episode's guest star: Jaye P. Morgan

That coconut is used as an explosive. Looks like the chef has some enemies.
Considering the great Gonzo has an amorous connection with a chicken called Camilla, and chickens are targeted by the chef more than once, Gonzo is my main suspect.
7. The Swedish chef is joined by his uncle, and they try to cook together. Do you know who plays that uncle? The problems in the kitchen aren't due to the fact of a vessel with a pestle missing.

Answer: Danny Kaye

Produced 1978. Episode's guest star: Danny Kaye

Sporting the same kind of bushy mustache and a toque, chef's whites and the same pink bow tie, the two gents try to cook at first a Swiss turkey with a Chinese stuffing which ends as a Yugoslavian chicken. The uncle snitches a well-kept secret: the chef is called Tom.

They are to prepare a Swiss turkey stuffed with Chinese ingredients but in the end they make a Yugoslavian chicken out of it.

The vessel with a pestle is well known from the 1956 movie "The Court Jester" with Kaye in the title role.
8. Nothing against some hot soup. Too bad if the main ingredient is still alive. What kind of animal defends its life with a cannon when it is attacked first with a cleaver, then with a blunderbuss?

Answer: Turtle

Produced 1979. Episode's guest star: Victor Borge.

The chef attempts to make turtle soup, but the turtle keeps pulling up into his shell when the chef is about to hack off his head with his cleaver. In the end chef uses his trusted blunderbuss- to learn in the hard way what a turtle might hide in the shell. A functioning little canon, in fact!
9. Sometimes nothing works. At one time, the chef has to rely on vitamin pill bottles. What DOES NOT happen on that occasion?

Answer: The chicken escapes with the help of a cat

Produced 1979. Episode's guest star: Arlo Guthrie.

The chef wants to prepare a homemade feast for all, including the guest star.

First try: the turkey doesn't want the skewer to be inserted in his body and knocks the chef out with the aforementioned skewer.
Second try: the piggy doesn't want to be a roast piggy and knocks the chef out with a saucepan.
Third try: Roast beef. Two stampedes in the row!
Fourth try: The vegetable tramples him down.

In the end he reveals bottles with vitamin pills at and as the dinner.
10. You may be surprised, but the chef is an accomplished singer. While wheeling a shopping cart through isles he throws food into it and sings which song together with a chorus made of fruit and vegetables?

Answer: "Yes, We Have No Bananas"

Produced 1979. Episode's guest star: Phyllis George.

For once, the chef is outside his kitchen. He just grabs something and throws the stuff into the cart. The chorus containing tomatoes, potatoes, grapes and so on sings in the same strange Swedish accent as the chef himself.

"Yes, We Have No Bananas" was published in 1923 and was performed among others by the Benny Goodman Orchestra and Al Jolson.

"Tutti Frutti" is a 1955 Little Richard song. "Glass Onion" appeared on the 1968 "White Album" by the Beatles.

"Watermelon Sugar" was released in 2019 by Harry Styles. No chance the chef knew this song in 1979!
