Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Leg 2 contained this race's first Detour task. Which team was forced to take a mandatory U-Turn in this leg?

Answer: Amanda and Kris

In Broken Hill, Australia, teams found their Detour task waiting in the Australian Outback's Living Desert. Here, they chose either 'Spirit World', in which they needed to craft a stone mosaic using an example for reference then dance upon it to receive their next clue, or they needed to complete 'Natural World' in which they had to create a painting using water and clay which they spit from their mouths. Every one of the eleven teams completed 'Spirit World'. For being the last team to find a paper airplane in the first leg of the race, Amanda and Kris were also forced to complete the other side of the Detour task.

They were eventually eliminated in this leg, unable to overcome their penalty.
2. In Japan in Leg 3, one team was pulled from the Detour and treated for hypothermia. Which task were they completing?

Answer: 'Frog of Luck'

In Japan, teams completed one of two tasks in the Mt. Fuji area. In 'Prayer of Purity' (completed by Flight Time and Big Easy and Ron and Christina), teams needed to go to a forested area and perform two rituals before standing under a freezing cold waterfall from the glaciers of Mt. Fuji for a minute to receive their clue.

The other teams chose 'Frog of Luck' in which they had to search a muddy pit for a plastic frog hidden inside (while locals pelted them with mud). During the latter task, Mel and Mike had to wait with paramedics for their temperatures to return to normal allowing last place team Jaime and Cara to catch up and overtake them.
3. In Leg 4, more teams opted to complete the 'Hammer' Detour task in Lijiang, China than the 'Horn' task.

Answer: True

In Leg 4, teams completed a series of tasks in Lijiang, China. In the Old Town, teams chose either 'Hammer' or 'Horn' for the Detour. In 'Hammer', teams needed to locate a candy shop and, using large mallets, pound a local candy until it was flat and hard enough to be cut and sold. Once they cut their pieces, they would receive their next clue.

In 'Horn', teams needed to find a local courtyard and carry a large horn to a temple across town while leading a procession of Chinese dancers. Only Flight Time and Big Easy and Zev and Justin finished this one.

After this task, teams raced to the fourth Pit Stop at the Eternal Tower where they were told to keep racing.
4. In Leg 5 in Kunming, China, how many teams utilized the Double U-Turn forcing teams to do the second Detour task?

Answer: Two

In Kunming, China, teams chose either 'Honor the Past' or 'Embrace the Future' for their Detour. In the former, teams watched a local play and needed to memorize the appearances of fifteen different people onstage. Then, in another room (without recording their answers) they needed to correctly place dolls representing the figures in the correct order to get their clue. Zev and Justin, Ron and Christina, Jen and Kisha, and Gary and Mallory finished this.

In 'Embrace the Future', teams needed to go to a local building to transport and construct solar water heaters on the roof to get their clue.

The remaining teams did this. After the Detour, teams found the race's first Double U-Turn at the Yunnan Province Cultural Center. Kent and Vyxsin used it to U-Turn Jaime and Cara forcing Jaime and Cara to use theirs on Flight Time and Big Easy. Both teams returned to complete the 'Honor the Past' Detour option.
5. In Leg 6, teams completing the 'Bengali Literature' task in Kolkata needed to deliver books to which of these locations?

Answer: School

In the crowded streets of Kolkata, India, teams needed to choose either 'Bengali Literature' or 'Hindu Art'. In 'Bengali Literature', Zev and Justin, Gary and Mallory, and Jet and Cord located a bookstore and collected eight large bundles of books to be delivered via rickshaw schoolbus to a local school.

When they dropped off the books they would receive their next clue. In 'Hindu Art', teams needed to find a statue shop and use local paints to decorate a statue of Ganesha as per a model's example. All of the other teams finished this task before heading to the sixth Pit Stop at the Fountain of Joy in Kolkata.
6. In Leg 7 in Varanasi, India, how many teams completed a Detour task?

Answer: Seven

In Varanasi, only seven teams remained. For the Detour task, teams needed to choose wither 'Feed the Fire' or 'Feed the Buffalo'. In 'Feed the Fire', teams needed to locate a specific house and use manure to create fifty fuel patties as per locals' specifications.

Then, they needed to light one and use it to boil a pot of milk. Kent and Vyxsin, Gary and Mallory, and Kisha and Jen completed this task. In 'Feed the Buffalo', the other four teams crossed the Ganges to collect bales of hay and then transport them through the narrow alleys of Varanasi to different addresses.
7. In Leg 8, did any of the participating teams complete the 'Quick, Easy Meal' Detour task?

Answer: No

While Zev and Justin, Kisha and Jen, and Gary and Mallory all opted to complete 'Quick, Easy Meal' at the Wiener Riesenrad in Vienna, Austria, none of them were able to complete their large Austrian meals in the twelve minute time limit. Instead, all six remaining teams finished 'Long, Hard Walk' in which they needed to find Sigmund Freud's house and carry a psychiatrist's couch one mile through the streets of Vienna to the University to receive their next clue.

After this, teams drove several hundred miles to the city of Salzburg, Austria for a Road Block task.
8. In Leg 9 (in Switzerland), Jet and Cord faced a Double U-Turn and were forced to complete both Detour tasks. Who used the device?

Answer: Flight Time and Big Easy

In Zermatt, Switzerland, teams chose either 'Cheese' or 'Wheeze'. In the former task, teams needed to find a local restaurant and indulge in a large pot of cheese fondue. Once they finished the steaming pot of decadent cheese, they would receive their next clue on the bottom of an empty fondue pot. Only Zev and Justin could finish this.

In 'Wheeze', teams needed to locate a pile of luggage at the Zermatt Train Station and deliver twenty pieces to at least five different hotels in the city. Once they received receipts for each one and returned them to the start, they would receive their next clue.

After the Detour, teams found a Double U-Turn waiting. Only Flight Time and Big Easy used this one forcing Jet and Cord to complete the 'Cheese' Detour (which they avoided earlier) and causing their subsequent elimination.
9. In Leg 10, teams who did not complete the 'Rescue' Detour task had to complete what other task?

Answer: Search

In Switzerland, teams flew by helicopter to their next task on the Matterhorn near Zermatt. Here, they either selected 'Search' or 'Rescue'. In 'Search', teams used avalanche beacons to locate mannequins in the snow. Using shovels, they needed to dig up their body and bring it to the surface to receive their next clue.

In 'Rescue', teams used a rope and pulley system to descend into an ice crevice and rescue a stranded mountaineer. When the mountaineer had surfaced teams would receive their clue. Zev and Justin and Gary and Mallory completed 'Search' while Kent and Vyxsin, Kisha and Jen, and Flight Time and Big Easy finished 'Rescue'.
10. In Rio de Janeiro in Leg 11, teams completing the 'On the Rocks' Detour task had to make which drink?

Answer: Caipirinha

On Copacabana Beach in Leg 11, teams needed to choose either 'On the Rocks' or 'On the Beach'. All four teams completed the former task in which they needed to properly make one hundred caipirinhas, the beach's most popular drink (consisting of lime, sugar, and rum.

When they had all one hundred properly made, they would receive their clue. In 'On the Beach', teams needed to sell sixty reals-worth of bikinis and have their customers model the outfit, changing inside a portable changing room. After this task, the final Detour of the race, teams headed to the next Pit Stop, the Contemporary Art Museum.
