Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Both Detour options in Leg 2, in the flats outside of Iquique, Chile, pertained to which of these?

Answer: Salt

In Leg 2, teams took taxis and rode their bikes into the Atacama Desert to visit the Tarapacá Salt Flats whereupon they were told to pick a Detour option, their first of the race. In this one, they got to pick between two salt-related tasks. In 'Brining', teams had to fill pools of water with salt enough so that they could float while reading the newspaper.

In 'Mining', they had to use tools to break into a large block of salt to find their next clue in a capsule inside. Nicole and Travis, Ally and Ashley, Jason and Amy, Tim and Marie, Nicki and Kim, and Tim and Danny completed 'Brining' while Brandon and Adam, Leo and Jamal, Chester and Ephraim, and Rowan and Shane completed 'Mining' before taking the bus to Santiago, Chile.
2. In Portugal in Leg 3, teams could choose to complete 'Miles' or what other locally-themed Detour task in Lisbon?

Answer: 'Tiles'

Reaching the Museu Nacional Dos Coches in Lisbon, Portugal, teams located a clue containing their Detour options. In 'Tiles', completed by Nicky and Kim, Brandon and Adam, Ally and Ashley, Leo and Jamal, and Tim and Marie, teams had to assemble a life-size ceramic tile puzzle of a historical figure to get their clue.

In 'Miles' Nicole and Travis, Jason and Amy, and Tim and Danny headed to the Padrão dos Descobrimentos where they had to use a giant compass and measure the total distance it took Magellan to circumnavigate the globe (using a large map). If they calculated the total within five hundred miles they would get their next clue. Chester and Ephraim were unable to make it to Lisbon in time to complete either task.
3. Visiting Norway in Leg 4, teams' Detour choices both involved dealing with which local industry?

Answer: Fishing

Visiting Svolvaer, Norway in the middle of the night, teams had a sunshiney go at two Detour options involving dealing with cod fish, a local staple. In 'Hang Your Heads', teams got messy stringing together six bundles of ten fishheads each. They then had transport the lines to drying racks and lay them out. Jason and Amy, Brandon and Adam, Nicole and Travis, Tim and Marie, Ally and Ashley, and Leo and Jamal headed to this one.

In 'Hammer of the Cods', teams instead had to collect fifteen pairs of cod from 30-foot-high drying racks and pound them to make one kilogram of fish jerky, removing bones on the way. Nicky and Kim and Tim and Danny went to this task.
4. Two teams were U-Turned in Poland in Leg 5 and forced to complete both sides of the Detour. Did this result in elimination for one of the teams?

Answer: Yes

Reaching the Golden Gate in Old Town Gdansk, teams selected either 'Pose', in which both team members had to pose as Neptune for donations, or 'Polka', for which they had to learn a traditional Polish dance. Following this selection, teams raced on foot to the foretold Double U-Turn board along the Motława Riverfront and there, Tim and Danny U-Turned Leo and Jamal while Leo and Jamal U-Turned Brandon and Adam.

It ultimately led the latter team to be eliminated from the race in this leg (after placing first on the preceding leg.

In this leg, interestingly, Tim and Marie also used their Express Pass to skip the Detour entirely.
5. All teams completed the 'Light Brigade' Detour option in Vienna, Austria in Leg 6.

Answer: False

Reaching the Vienna State Opera House's costume room, teams collected a Detour clue consisting of 'Light Brigade' and 'Masquerade' as choices though none took the former, instead heading to a masquerade ball to match up masks with specific dancers. Had teams chosen 'Light Brigade' they would have, instead, needed to construct a chandelier correctly to claim their next clue.

This was the first unanimous Detour choice of the season, completed by all seven pairs.
6. What did teams need to sew in the 'Sew It Up' Detour task in Abu Dhabi (in Leg 7)?

Answer: Fishing nets

Visiting the Irani Souk in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in Leg 7, teams had to decide whether or not to 'Sort It Out' or 'Sew It Up'. Leo and Jamal, Ally and Ashley, Tim and Marie, and Nicky and Kim chose to 'Sort It Out', constructing a date platter by copying an exemplar and hunting for the correct ones in a marketplace. On the other side of this, Jason and Amy and Nicole and Travis opted to 'Sew It Up', creating a metal fishing net from scratch following a local fisherman's example.
7. How many teams were forced to complete both sides of the Detour following the U-Turn in Al Ain in Leg 8?

Answer: Two

The Detour in Al Ain proved to be dynamic in terms of race mechanics. Nicole and Travis skipped both tasks by using their Express Pass, so they were able to head directly to the Double U-Turn board. They used it on Leo and Jamal. Tim and Marie also, subsequently, used this on Nicky and Kim. All teams except for Nicky and Kim initially completed the 'Beauty Contests' task, dressing camels for a pageant.

The other task, 'Wedding Guests', asked teams to prepare ingredients to make a local wedding dish.
8. Which task was completed by more teams in Bandung, Indonesia (in Leg 9)?

Answer: 'For the Elephants'

In Bandung, Indonesia, both Detour options involved animals. 'For the Elephants' was the clear winner for completion; teams had to visit a market and pick up eight watermelons, two bunches of bananas, a dozen sweet potatoes and five stalks of sugar cane before taxiing and delivering that food on a hand trolley to feed the elephants of a local zoo. Only Nicole and Travis did 'For the Birds', during which they had to pick up two lovebirds and take them to a local 'bird song grand prix' to make them sing.
9. Only one team completed the 'Turn Over a New Leaf' Detour option in Indonesia in Leg 10. Who was it?

Answer: Leo and Jamal

After several stops around Subang during Leg 10, teams chose between two lengthy Detour options in Leg 10. Three teams opted for 'Paint Your Partner', during which both team members, without the aid of a mirror, needed to make each other up as Javanese brides by applying makeup and accessories to match a model.

While those three teams took about three hours to complete that task, Leo and Jamal flip-flopped repeatedly, ultimately finishing the 'Turn Over a New Leaf' task across five hours of searching local tea fields for a marked pair of clipping shears.
10. The last Detour of this season of the race occurred in which nation?

Answer: Japan

Teams located their last Detour task in Tokyo, Japan when they were asked to choose between 'Knock It Down' and 'Call It Up'. Teams split down the middle for this with Tim and Marie and Leo and Jamal finishing 'Knock It Down' and Nicole and Travis and Jason and Amy finishing 'Call It Up'.

The former sent teams to a Japanese game show themed around bowling while the latter involved a unique phone booth filled with water in the middle of a Tokyo park. There was no Detour in the final leg of the race.
