Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Slitheen-Margaret becomes mayor of Cardiff, and the Doctor and company foil her plans to destroy the planet.

Answer: Boom Town

Visiting Cardiff to give the TARDIS a bit of time to soak up the local rift energy and recharge, the Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack encounter an old foe, who has become the city's new mayor. Slitheen-Margaret's ambitious plans for a nuclear power plant turn out to be a plot to destroy Earth and escape into the stars. "Boom Town" was the eleventh episode of Series 1 and written by Russell T Davies.
2. Charles Dickens and creatures of gas are at the heart of this early, somewhat creepy story.

Answer: The Unquiet Dead

The Doctor and Rose visit nineteenth-century Cardiff and run into legendary author Charles Dickens. What ensues is the stuff of ghost stories, with gaseous aliens known as the Gelth haunting a funeral home and possessing corpses in its morgue. Their plan? To bridge the gap between their world and Earth and assume permanent corporeal forms.

They are ultimately defeated, but the rift upon which the morgue is built remains. "The Unquiet Dead" was penned by Mark Gatiss and was the third episode of the series.
3. The Doctor discovers his greatest enemy hidden deep underground in a "museum" of alien artefacts.

Answer: Dalek

A wayward signal picked up by the TARDIS leads the Doctor and Rose to the bunker of Henry van Statten, a wealthy American collector with a sizeable collection of artefacts from beyond Earth. Amongst his prized possessions, the Doctor finds a dormant Dalek, one of his (and his race's) most ancient enemies. Enraged at this lone survivor, the Doctor demands its destruction, but the simple act of Rose touching it sees the Dalek being re-energised and beginning a massacre of the bunker's personnel. "Dalek" was sixth in Series 1's running order and was crafted by Robert Shearman.
4. The second in a two-part story, the Doctor and Rose continue to investigate Blitz London amidst cries of "Are you my mummy?"

Answer: The Doctor Dances

Beginning with "The Empty Child", the Doctor and Rose find themselves in wartime London and investigating the mysterious appearance of a gas mask-wearing child. When it becomes clear that this is no ordinary child and can add people to its ranks simply by touching them, the Doctor and Rose find themselves teaming up with a rogue Time Agent from the future named Captain Jack.

In "The Doctor Dances", the trio, along with local girl Nancy, discover the child is Nancy's son, who was injured by a falling medical pod and "healed" by the restorative nanogenes contained within.

Their lack of knowledge of human anatomy led to the gas mask being fused to the boy's head, and this curative information was transferred to anyone he touched. "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances" were the ninth and tenth episodes, respectively, of Series 1 and were both written by Steven Moffat.
5. The Doctor absorbs the Time Vortex from Rose and sacrifices himself to save her, triggering a regeneration into the Tenth Doctor.

Answer: The Parting of the Ways

With an army of Daleks descending upon Satellite 5, the Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack prepare to fight for their lives. However, a last-minute action by the Doctor sees him sending Rose back to 21st century Earth to protect her. Determined not to leave the Doctor to die, Rose uses everything she can to open the TARDIS console and establish a telepathic link with the machine.

She ultimately succeeds and looks right into the heart of the TARDIS, absorbing the power of the Time Vortex as a result. She arrives back on Satellite 5 and is able to harness her power long enough to destroy the Daleks and save the Doctor. To return the favour, the Doctor absorbs the Time Vortex from Rose (to save her from burning up) and transfers it back to the TARDIS.

In doing so, he damages himself irreparably, with no other option than to regenerate and take on a new form. "The Parting of the Ways" was the thirteenth and final episode of Series 1 (and for Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor too), and was written by Russell T Davies.
6. Rose interferes with established events in her timeline and saves a significant figure in her life from death, resulting in catastrophic consequences for the rest of the world.

Answer: Father's Day

An unusual request from Rose sees the Doctor taking her to see her father, who was hit by a car and killed when she was only an infant. However, overcome with grief, she intervenes and saves him from death, but creates a paradox and a wound in the fabric of time.

This results in temporal creatures known as Reapers appearing and beginning to "cleanse" the wound by consuming anything and everything around it. With more and more people dying to the Reapers (including the Doctor), Rose's father realises the only way to fix things is for him to die and re-establish the timeline. Paul Cornell's "Father's Day" was eighth in the series.
7. The first in a two-part story, an extraterrestrial family known as the Slitheen begin their encroachment, hidden inside the skin of other humans.

Answer: Aliens of London

Marking the first introduction of the Slitheen (from the planet Raxicoricofallapatorius), this episode sees this intergalactic alien family attempting to take over the British government by compressing and disguising themselves within the skin of their unfortunate human victims.

The story continues in "World War Three", as the Doctor and Rose race to stop the Slitheen from instigating an international war and exploiting this for profit. "Aliens of London" and "World War Three" were fourth and fifth in Series 1 and were both written by Russell T Davies.
8. The Doctor and Rose find themselves taking part in futuristic and dangerous reality television programmes for the entertainment of humanity.

Answer: Bad Wolf

When the crew of the TARDIS are suddenly teleported out and placed into reality television programmes, the trio try to reunite and discover how the TARDIS' defences were breached. As things become more clear, the Doctor discovers they are back aboard Satellite 5, this time broadcasting entertainment rather than news, and the "masters" controlling the station are none other than the Daleks, led by the imposing Emperor of the Daleks. "Bad Wolf" was the twelfth and penultimate episode of the series, written by Russell T Davies, and leading directly into the final episode, "The Parting of the Ways".
9. Aboard Platform One, the Doctor and Rose join a select group of guests in watching the Earth being engulfed by the Sun.

Answer: The End of the World

For her first trip into time and space, the Doctor takes Rose to Platform One, five billion years in her future, to watch a significant event in Earth's history - the day the Sun expands and wipes out the planet. For the Doctor, this is just another event in history; for Rose, it is the death of her home planet.

However, events take a sinister turn when one of the guests tries to sabotage the station's defences.
10. Simon Pegg guest stars as the Editor in this episode based around the control and broadcast of news to a fearful human population on the planet below.

Answer: The Long Game

With the ever-transmitting Satellite 5 beaming news down to Earth, humanity's progress has slowed down, almost as if in fear of what lies beyond. The Doctor and Rose investigate the journalistic practices of the station and discover that the humans are being kept from expanding out into the stars through almost propaganda-like journalism, thanks to an effort spearheaded by Simon Pegg's Editor of the station and the Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe. "The Long Game" was by Russell T Davies and was seventh in the series.
