Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tom was put in charge of the newspaper because the editor was out of town. What happens to the paper while he's in charge?

Answer: printers go on strike

Mary ended up being pro-labor and David, who was a member of a union at his work, felt funny crossing a picket line to have lunch with his father.
2. What did Nancy want to do in this episode?

Answer: model

Nancy wanted to model and needed to take photographs... which would cost $200. The Bradfords didn't have the money for the photos, but Joan offered to take Nancy's pictures for her.
3. What was the name of Nicholas' friend who was hanging around?

Answer: Julian

Julian was in Nicholas' class. Tommy thought Julian was always around because he liked the food. When Tom was talking with Julian, Tom found out that Julian liked staying with the Bradfords because his own parents argued a lot. Julian even said that Tom was like Julian's grandfather. When Julian caught Tom and Joan fighting, however, he asked to be taken home.
4. Why didn't the agent hire Nancy?

Answer: She was cute

He said Nancy was cute, but cute wasn't selling - 'off the wall' was selling. However, he did like the photos that Joan took of Nancy and offered Joan a job instead. As the strike was still ongoing at the newspaper with no end in sight, Joan took the job.
5. While Joan was working, who made meals for Tom?

Answer: Susan

Susan believed that Tom wasn't eating healthy. She believed that he shouldn't use sugar n his milk. (As a response to Susan's nagging about the sugar, he put about 4 teaspoons in his coffee.) While Joan was working one night, Susan made Tom a salad because she believed that Tom ate too much food with cholesterol in it. Tom didn't want the salad, but 'compromised' and put some ketchup on a pita to eat instead.
6. Who wrote an editorial for Tom's newspaper?

Answer: Mary

Mary wrote an editorial that was pro-labor (the printers) and anti-management (Tom). This put Tom in a dilemma - should he print Mary's editorial or not? If he printed the editorial, the labor union would believe that management was weak. If he didn't print the editorial, it would look as though he was using his position unfairly. In the end, he printed the editorial.

When Mr. French, the head of the printers' union, read Mary's editorial, he believed it showed that he could talk/negotiate with the newspaper's management (Tom).
7. Why was Tom told the paper may not have much longer to exist, despite the printing being done by other employees?

Answer: there was no more newsprint

Tom mentioned that the paper was running like in the old days, with the people who wrote the columns printing the paper. The paper mill sympathized with the printers and would not deliver more newsprint until the strike was settled.

With the printers on strike, classified ads ended up getting onto the front page of the newspaper!
8. Why didn't David like Joan working?

Answer: His laundry wasn't being washed properly

David didn't seem too upset by Joan working, except for the fact that his laundry wasn't quite the same. In fact, the shirt he was wearing at the construction site used to be his best dress shirt! Tom didn't like Joan working the most, and told her that he'd always let Joan have her own identity. Joan didn't like that he said he 'let' her have her own identity, and they fought.
9. Why did Joan leave her job?

Answer: Modeling agency closed

Joan's boss confessed that his bookkeeper told him he couldn't afford to stay in business. Joan was only being paid in the company's profits, so she didn't make much/anything to begin with. Joan's boss ended up getting a job at the newspaper. When Joan went to confront Tom about hiring her boss in order for Joan to be laid off, he claimed not to be involved in hiring people and that the position her (now former) boss was hired for was one of the concessions he made to the labor union.
10. In the end, what did Joan do to continue working?

Answer: Turned the laundry room into a darkroom

Tom suggested buying the darkroom equipment as Joan's boss would now be working at the newspaper instead. This would allow her to continue working as much as she liked and the family would know where she was when they needed her.
