Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who are the two members of the band Flight Of The Conchords?

Answer: Bret and Jemaine

Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement portray caricatured versions of themselves in the brilliantly witty comedy, ably assisted - perhaps even surpassed - by Rhys Darby as the duo's hapless manager Murray.

Mel is the band's obsessive fan and Doug is her meek, wet behind the ears husband.
2. Which of the following is NOT an attraction of New Zealand that Murray tries to big up in the episode "Bret Gives Up The Dream"?

Answer: A state of the art restaurant

Believe it or not, there really IS a toothbrush fence. According to Murray, it has "over 50 toothbrushes now". It was designed by Graham Cairns and can be found on the North island of New Zealand in Te Pahu. Imagine that.

The shed that looks like a sheep and the giant carrot can both be found on posters adorning Murray's display.
3. What is the name of Flight Of The Conchords' one and only fan?

Answer: Mel

Kristen Schaal is so good as the infatuated fan that she comes across as more than a little creepy. Clearly it's not just the boys' music that Mel craves after, and Bret and Jemaine spend most of their time trying to avoid her. Except when they're in need, of course.

Todd is the highly irritating "third conchord" in the last episode of the first series.

Sally is the love interest for both Bret and Jemaine during several episodes.
4. In the episode "Mugged", what does Jemaine choose as his "rapping" name?

Answer: The Hip-Hopopotamus

One of the funniest moments of the entire series for me is when one of the muggers asks Jemaine exactly who he is, and he replies - in the form of a rap song - "I'm the hip-hopopotamus, my rhymes are bottomless..." and then just stands staring blankly at the camera, seemingly at a loss as to what to say next.

The Rhymenosaurus is Bret's rapping name in the same episode.

I made the other two up myself, as you could probably tell if you've ever watched the programme.
5. My favourite episode from the first series is "Drive By". What is NOT one of the lines of the song "Leggy Blonde", which Murray sings about the girl from Tech Support?

Answer: You made me cry

Murray thinks he's "in love" with Jessica, the Tech Support girl in this episode, so he writes her a song. Unfortunately, she leaves before he can sing it to her, so we hear him singing the frankly ridiculous lyrics over a tune not dissimilar to The Beautiful South. It comes complete with a cheesy mid-song drum solo too, and a hilariously misplaced rap by Jemaine at the end.

Of course, "You made me cry" is the first line of Fats Domino's "Ain't That a Shame", and I also thought it might sound like a line fit for a love song.
6. Which of the following statements is NOT true about Dave, the band's closest ally?

Answer: He has a parrot

Dave vehemently denies that he lives with his folks. Once Jemaine points out that they have photographs of themselves with him as a little boy all around the house, Dave replies, in hushed tomes, "I know! It's creepy - I think they make them on the Internet".

He's a strange chap, is Dave, and he carries his paintball gun around at will, also sporting a Rambo style bandana in an effort to be the epitome of "cool".

He will help out here and there though, and when Bret and Jemaine are suffering racist abuse, he teaches them to "flip the bird" - the process of lifting the middle finger as an unsavoury salute.
7. Which of these songs is featured in the episode entitled "The Actor"?

Answer: Cheer Up Murray

Murray is feeling dejected about his failings as a manager, so Bret and Jemaine write him a song which is supposed to gee him up a bit, though some of the lyrics are more than a little unflattering, and certainly unprintable here!
"Bret You Got It Goin' On" is in a similar vain, which Jemaine writes for Bret when HE'S feeling down.

"Inner City Pressure" is a brilliant spoof of several Pet Shop Boys songs which is featured in "Bret Gives Up The Dream".

"If You're Into It" is the side splitting resultant tune after Jemaine has toned down Bret's over the top love song for his new partner Coco in the episode "Yoko".
8. Which British megastar appears in a dream to Bret, in an advisory capacity, during episode six, which is also named after him?

Answer: David Bowie

Of course, it's not REALLY David Bowie - it's Jemaine dressed up as the legendary British superstar, giving Bret some rather misguided advice.

Obviously, I chose the other three because they're also British megastars.
9. In the episode "What Goes On Tour", which of these events does NOT particularly upset Murray?

Answer: Sleeping in the bath

Several mishaps occur during this episode - the television falls out of the hotel window after being perched there while Bret and Jemaine have been trying to tune it in, and Bret accidentally causes Murray's car to plunge into the swimming pool by leaving the handbrake off, causing the luckless manager to rant "Personally I preferred the mixed nuts caper! At least that was original!"

It's true that Murray DOES sleep in the bath in this episode, while Bret and Jemaine wait in the bedroom for an entire female water polo team to join them, but he doesn't seem unduly upset by this.
10. What is the name of the band that the repugnant Todd forms, and goes on to bigger things with, at the end of the first series?

Answer: Crazy Dogggz

Todd antagonises Jemaine when he keeps trying to get him to rehearse a dreadful song he's written called "The Doggy Bounce", while Bret forms The Original Flight Of The Conchords after having been thrown out of the band. Eventually Todd forms his own band, Crazy Dogggz, and goes on to enormous mainstream success - with Murray managing them!

"The Third Conchord" is the name of the season's final episode.

Mel's Bells is just something I made up!
