Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and the demon Crowley (David Tennant) first met at the Garden of Eden. What item did Aziraphale give to Adam and Eve that caused him grief throughout the series?

Answer: Flaming sword

The beginning of the world occurred in 4004 B.C.E. on a date and time accurately predicted by the Reverend James Ussher in the 1660s (well, he was off by fifteen minutes but close enough). The demon Crawley (which was the name that Crowley was known by at the time) was the serpent that goaded Eve into biting the apple.

As the angel Aziraphale stood on the wall watching Adam and Eve leave the garden and wander off into the desert, the snake slithered up next to him and turned into Crawley. Crawley was the first one to ask Aziraphale about the flaming sword, and the angel admitted that he gave it to Adam and Eve because the two would face wild animals in the desert and because Eve was expecting.

But when Aziraphale was later sealing up the garden, God (Frances McDormand) asked where the sword was, and the missing sword was mentioned a few more times over the centuries.
2. In 3004 B.C.E. while Aziraphale and Crowley watched Noah's Ark being loaded, what animal did they see escape?

Answer: Unicorn

"What's all this about? Build a big boat and fill it with a traveling zoo?" Crowley asked when he met Aziraphale in Mesopotamia. The angel explained that God wasn't happy with the people: "Wiping out the human race. Big storm". He added that it was just the locals; God wasn't angry at the Chinese, Native Americans, or Australians. Crowley was incredulous: "Drowning everybody else? Not the kids. You can't kill kids" before pointing out, "Well that's more the kind of thing you'd expect my lot to do".

But then Crowley noticed the unicorn and called out, "Oy, Shem! That unicorn's gonna make a run for it. Aw, it's too late." He mentioned that they still had one, but that explains the end of the unicorn lineage.
3. The demon Crowley enjoyed a rock and roll lifestyle on Earth. What music was heard emanating from his Bentley automobile?

Answer: Queen

Crowley dressed in tight, dark clothing, wore steampunk-vibe sunglasses to cover his serpent eyes, and sauntered with a devil-may-care attitude (no pun intended). He wasn't particularly fond of being a demon, moaning that he "didn't mean to fall, he just hung out with the wrong people".

The Hell-dwelling demons complained that he had gone native, which was true - he enjoyed his life on Earth. He was particularly fond of his vintage Bentley which he drove entirely too fast, claiming that pedestrians knew the risks of being in the street.

He had other CDs in his car, including the Velvet Underground, but only Queen was played. If you've read the book, you know that this is because any album in the car would eventually turn into an album of Queen's greatest hits.
4. By contrast, the angel Aziraphale was cultured and enjoyed the finer things in life. What type of establishment did he operate on Earth?

Answer: Book Store

Aziraphale was once referred to as a dandy, and it was a pretty accurate description. He dressed ornately, which caused him problems during the French Revolution when he popped across the Channel for crepes and was mistaken for an aristocrat. He also enjoyed fine food and wines, classical music, and above all, books.

He opened his antiquarian book shop in the 19th century and was proud of his collection of first editions, particularly first editions of prophetic writings. Incidentally, did you notice Terry Pratchett's signature hat on the coat rack? It was visible in the first scene in the book shop when Aziraphale was hanging up his coat.
5. Aziraphale and Crowley crossed paths many times over the centuries, and when they met in St. James Park in the mid-1800s, Crowley asked for an item which the angel initially refused to provide but eventually consented to give him. What was in the thermos that Aziraphale gave to Crowley in the 1960s to prevent the demon from breaking into a church?

Answer: Holy water

When they met at the park in the mid-1800s, Crowley gave Aziraphale a slip of paper with the words "holy water" on it, telling Aziraphale that he needed it in case things went south for him, but Aziraphale threw the paper in the lake, saying that he wouldn't be responsible for Crowley's suicide.

Then during WWII, Crowley realized it wasn't difficult to obtain holy water. He had entered a church to rescue Aziraphale from Nazi agents; the angel was there on a mission to capture the agents, but he'd been misled by a fake British operative.

While Crowley was hopping about to ease the pain of stepping on consecrated ground, he noticed the basin of holy water and was surprised that it was left out in the open for anyone to take. In the 1960s, Crowley had assembled a gang to break into a church to steal holy water, but Aziraphale got wind of the plan and decided to give him the water instead. One member of the gang was Witchfinder Lance Corporal Shadwell whom both Crowley and Aziraphale would later use to track down the Antichrist.
6. Eleven years prior to the current day, Crowley met with two Hell-dwelling demons who gave him a basket containing the baby Antichrist to take to a local hospital. Who ran the hospital?

Answer: Satanic nuns

The demons Ligur (Ariyon Bakare) and Hastur (Ned Dennehy) were both Dukes of Hell, and neither of them cared for Crowley. But that wasn't unusual for a demon; as Ligur pointed out, "It'd be a funny odd world if demons went around trusting each other". Crowley took the baby to the hospital which was run by Satanic Nuns of the Chattering Order of St. Beryl, an order specifically created for this event.

The intention was to switch the Antichrist baby with the newborn of the American ambassador (Nick Offerman) who was assigned in the area.

But a local couple, the Youngs (Daniel Mays and Sian Brooke), were also expecting a baby, and when they showed up at the same time, confusion ensued. Mr. Young was outside the building when Crowley arrived, and Crowley mistook him for the ambassador or someone with his security team. Young told Crowley that the room number was three. One of the nuns, Sister Mary Loquacious (Nina Sosanya), was apparently a bit inept and was given the menial task of getting biscuits.

But she happened to pass the entrance when Crowley arrived, and when Crowley gave her the basket and told her to take the Antichrist to room three, she did as she was told, not realizing that the ambassador's wife (Jill Winternitz) was in another room. When it came time to name the babies, both the Mother Superior (Susan Brown), who was with the ambassador's wife and Sister Mary Loquacious, who was with the Youngs, suggested the name Damien. The ambassador's wife said that Damien Dowling was too alliterative, but she accepted the second suggestion of Warlock, "an old English name". Mr. Young turned down the suggestions of Damien and Cain, but accepted the third suggestion of Adam. So all the parties of Hell believed that Warlock Dowling was the Antichrist, except for Sister Mary Loquacious who knew that the Antichrist was named Adam. Did you notice that Mr. Young's license plate read "SID RAT"? "TARDIS" backwards -- one of several "Doctor Who" Easter Eggs in honor of David Tennant, the Tenth Doctor.
7. When Crowley met with Aziraphale to convince him to work together to prevent the end of times, Crowley appealed to Aziraphale's love of fine foods, wines, and humanities. He pointed out that there wouldn't be any more Sondheim shows because rumor had it that the Supreme Being was fond of which musical?

Answer: The Sound of Music

Aziraphale cringed when Crowley mentioned that the angel's Boss was a big fan of "The Sound of Music", but quoting the musical was commonplace for angels in Heaven. When Aziraphale went up to Heaven for a status meeting with the angel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) and the other angels, Gabriel encouraged him to "As the Almighty likes to say, 'Climb Every Mountain'" in his attempt to bring about Armageddon, while the angel Sandalphon (Paul Chahidi) added "Ford every stream".

When Aziraphale was captured by the other angels toward the end of the series, Uriel (Gloria Oblanyo) and Sandalphon sang, "Renegade angels tied up with string.

These are a few of our favorite things".
8. Aziraphale and Crowley used nurture over nature to help raise young Warlock to be a normal boy. Aziraphale exerted his kindly ways on the boy while serving as a gardener for the family. What position did Crowley occupy in the household?

Answer: Nanny

Crowley's idea was that while he guided Warlock toward evil, Aziraphale would teach him kindness, and the two would cancel each other out thus resulting in a normal "human" boy. Aziraphale, in his homely disguise as Brother Francis the gardener, taught Warlock about all of the creatures on Earth, including brother snail and sister slug. Crowley cross-dressed as a nanny with a Dr. Strangelove vibe.

He sang Warlock lullabies of evil ("Go to sleep and dream of pain, doom and darkness, blood and brains"), and when Warlock mentioned the nice things Brother Francis had taught him, Crowley told Warlock to ignore the gardener and listen to nanny instead.
9. Crowley and Aziraphale realized that they'd been nurturing the wrong boy at his eleventh birthday party. What was supposed to appear on that day but didn't?

Answer: The Hellhound

Crowley had neglected to mention the purpose of the Hellhound to Aziraphale. On the Antichrist's eleventh birthday, the Hellhound was to appear, and the Antichrist was to give it a name that would define its purpose, for example, The Tearer of Limbs or Destroyer of Souls.

The naming of the Hellhound would be the beginning of the end. But the dog didn't show up at the party, and when Crowley received a call from the home office, checking on the hound, the two realized that something was amiss: "No dog. Wrong boy." Meanwhile Adam Young (Sam Taylor Buck) was spending his birthday playing in the woods with his group of friends: Brian (Ilan Galkoff), Pepper (Amma Ris), and Wensleydale (Alfie Taylor). Crowley and the other denizens of Hell might have been confused about who the Antichrist was, but the Hellhound wasn't.

The Great Dane-looking dog with ferocious teeth appeared in the woods and listened as Adam told his friends about the present he wanted for his birthday. It turned out Adam DID want a dog, but he wanted a little dog - the kind that could crawl down rabbit holes and do tricks. And he wanted to call him Dog.

The Hellhound had a brief puzzled look on his face before he turned into a small terrier-type dog. Unfortunately, it was hard to exert terror on others when you're just a small dog, and his attempt to intimidate the neighbor's cat resulted in him getting slapped with a paw.
10. Agnes Nutter (Josie Lawrence) was a seventeenth century witch whose book of prophecies was the only one to be completely accurate. How did Agnes meet her demise?

Answer: She blew up.

Agnes Nutter (1600 -1656) was an amazingly accurate witch. She had even predicted the date and time of her death, and when the townsfolk showed up to burn her at the stake, she chastised them: "Tardy. I should have been aflame ten minutes since". The townsfolk knew that she was a witch because she was able to cure them of their bizarre ailments and because she ran through the village with no one chasing her. Agnes had told them that she jogged for her health, but the townsfolk thought it was because invisible demons were after her.

The mob that arrived at her door was led by Witchfinder Major Thou-Shalt-Not-Commit-Adultery Pulsifer (Jack Whitehall), whose name was often shortened to Adultery Pulsifer, to his displeasure. After Pulsifer tied her to the stake, she told the townsfolk to lean in closer so that they could see what happened "to those who meddle with such as they do not understand".

It turned out that Agnes planned to take them with her; she had loaded her petticoat with fifty pounds of gunpowder and thirty pounds of nails, and when the fire was lit, she and the townsfolk exploded.
11. Agnes' descendants had used her prophecies well. What did one of her descendants purchase in 1980 that had made the family very wealthy?

Answer: Apple stock

Agnes left the copy of her "The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch" to her daughter and son-in-law Virtue and John Device (Bryony Corrigan and Dan Antopolski). Her son-in-law realized the value of the prophecies, but her daughter scoffed at them: "'December 1980. An apple will arise that no man can eat.

Invest thy money in Master Jobbe's machine and good fortune will tend thy days.' This is balderdash!" Luckily, the book was passed down through the centuries, and Anathema Device's grandmother was able to accurately interpret this particular prophecy and bought 5,000 shares of stock in Apple Computers. Thus, when the Antichrist baby showed up on Earth, young Anathema Device (Reagan Osman), the great-great-great-great-great granddaughter of Agnes Nutter, was living in a luxury sea cliff home in Malibu, California.

She was trained by her mother (Gabriella Cirillo) to study the prophecies because Anathema herself was named as the one who would stop Armageddon.
12. Newton Pulsifer (Jack Whitehall), the descendant of Witchfinder Major Thou-Shalt-Not-Commit-Adultery Pulsifer, was a bit cursed when it came to which type of technology?

Answer: Computers

As a child Newt had repaired the family's computer, but when he plugged it in, he took out the electricity in the neighborhood, and it apparently wasn't the first time it had happened. As an adult, he had trouble keeping a job since computers were pretty ubiquitous in modern offices.

It was after being dismissed from a job that he met Witchfinder Sergeant Shadwell (Michael McKean) and was recruited to be a Witchfinder Private since he didn't have anything else to do. When he later met Anathema Device (Adria Arjona), he told her he was a computer engineer, but Agnes' prophecy stated that "he's not what he says he is".
13. How did Crowley and Aziraphale first meet Anathema Device?

Answer: She crashed into their car.

Crowley and Aziraphale were heading back to London in the Bentley when Anathema crashed into the car, and she and her bike went flying over the hood. Aziraphale repaired her broken bone and her bike while Crowley fixed his car. Aziraphale then offered her a ride, which Crowley argued against since there wasn't room for a bike, but a bike rack miraculously appeared on the back on the car.

While they were driving her to her cottage, Anathema peered out the back window and mentioned that her bike didn't have gears. Crowley smirked at Aziraphale: "Oh Lord, heal this bike", and Aziraphale sheepishly admitted that he had been carried away.

But when they arrived at the cottage, the bike was back in its original condition without gears. Unfortunately for Anathema, she left Agnes' book in the car. Crowley discovered it, but didn't realize what it was. Aziraphale knew though, and he used it to locate the Antichrist.
14. Anathema gave Adam several new age/conspiracy theorist magazines which he read before bedtime, and unfortunately, his powers and his thoughts combined to make several of the topics come true. What appeared in front of a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean thanks to Adam?

Answer: The island of Atlantis

Due to the baby mix-up, Adam had grown up without the evil influence necessary for when he came into his powers. So it was Anathema who actually was his guide. She shared her concerns about the environment and various conspiracies, which Adam ate up, especially since they were written in magazines: "Things on the Internet can be made up.

This is magazines. Of course it's real". So after reading about Atlantis before bed, the thoughts in his head came true. A cruise liner crossing the Atlantic crashed into "a vast expanse of sea bed" that had risen from the ocean floor, and the inhabitants who wore flowing robes and diving helmets boarded the ship and mingled with the cruisers. Adam also made a nuclear reactor disappear and be replaced with a lemon sherbet (he'd been snacking on those while he read). And after his friends told him about saving the whales, he made the kraken appear and destroy whaling vessels.
15. Outsourcing had reached Heaven and Hell. Who was hired to summon the Four Horsemen?

Answer: A delivery service

Leslie (Simon Merrells), a charming delivery man for the International Express Company, had been tasked with summoning the Horsemen. His first delivery was to War, who was at a peace treaty signing ceremony in a remote part of Africa. Her appearance at the ceremony stirred things up, and when Leslie arrived, everyone was pointing guns at each other. Leslie was unperturbed by the situation; he merely mentioned the difficulty he had finding the place due to the lack of sign posts as he approached War with her package.

He left after she signed for it, so he missed the carnage. After War opened the package and took out her sword, the people momentarily turned their guns on her, but after she walked away, they started shooting each other.
16. The Horseman Famine was unveiling his latest creation, food that wasn't really food, at a motel diner in a remote area of Iowa when he was summoned. In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene, who was working the grill at the diner?

Answer: Elvis

Famine's specialty was expensive restaurants where humans had a whiff of fragrant air for a first course and ate very small nibbles of food. He was unveiling his latest invention at the diner - hamburgers, fries, and shakes that were actually all chemicals -- no food, no nutrition. Leslie the delivery man showed up and gave him his package which consisted of measuring scales.

As Famine was signing for his package, Leslie got a glimpse of the grill cook who was singing "Hound Dog", and Leslie did a double take - it was an older Fat Elvis. Leslie left with a grin on his face while Famine told his assistant to cancel all of his meetings as he headed out of the diner with his scales.
17. The Horseman Pestilence had retired. Which more modern problem had taken his place?

Answer: Pollution

Leslie had two deliveries to make on a Saturday, telling his wife that the job was important because it was booked about 6,000 years ago. But both deliveries were local. His first stop was by a trash-filled river in Sussex. The Horseman Pollution (Lourdes Faberes) was sitting on a bench, remarking how beautiful the river was.

When she signed for her delivery, black goo oozed on the paper, and when she removed the golden crown from the package, it turned black in her hands. Leslie's last delivery turned out to be at the same place but in the road.

It was a message to Death reading "Come and see". When Leslie stepped into the road, he was hit by a speeding truck/lorry. Death told him "DON'T THINK OF IT AS DYING. THINK OF IT AS LEAVING EARLY TO AVOID THE RUSH".
18. Horses are so yesterday. What mode of transportation did the Four Horsemen now use?

Answer: Motorcycles

The Four Horsemen rode color-coded motorcycles with Death riding a bony chopper. One of the funniest scenes in the book which didn't make it into the television series involved a group of bikers who were tricked into following the Horsemen, not fully realizing who they were. The local bikers gave themselves intimidating names like Grievous Bodily Harm, Embarrassing Personal Problems, and Things Not Working Properly Even After You've Thumped Them. They were apparently cut from the project due to budget restrictions.
19. Aziraphale accidentally transported himself to Heaven and although he was able to get back to Earth, he needed to find a body to inhabit. Whose body did he use?

Answer: Madame Tracy

Aziraphale's attempts to prevent Armageddon made Gabriel and the other angels suspicious so Archangel Michael (Doon Mackichan) reviewed Earth footage and realized that Aziraphale and Crowley had been meeting. Michael and a few "enforcer" angels roughed up Aziraphale which made him want to speak directly with the Big Guy. So he created a circle of candles in his book shop which served as a communications portal with Heaven, but he only reached God's spokesman, Metatron (Derek Jacobi) who repeated the same spiel that Gabriel and the other angels had given - war was necessary to settle the issues between Heaven and Hell. Metatron then told Aziraphale to report to Heaven to join his combat unit, but Aziraphale told him he had to finish up a few things on Earth first. Unfortunately for Aziraphale, he accidentally stepped in the circle and was transported to Heaven, losing his human body along the way.

He was able to get back down to Earth but had to find another body to use. Luckily, Madame Tracy (Miranda Richardson) was holding a séance, so Aziraphale was able to slip into her body.

When Crowley later met up with Witchfinder Sergeant Shadwell and Madame Tracy at the Armageddon site, he complimented Aziraphale's dress: "Suits you". When Adam and his friends arrived at the site, Adam could tell that there were two people in Madame Tracy's body, and he split them, giving Aziraphale his body back.
20. The Dukes of Hell, Ligur and Hastur, came to get Crowley, but he was ready for them. After disintegrating Ligur, where did Crowley temporarily trap Hastur?

Answer: In an answering machine

Ligur had been tipped off by the Archangel Michael that Crowley was up to something with Aziraphale, and Hastur had discovered that Warlock wasn't the Antichrist, so the two were going after Crowley. Crowley was ready for them. He had rigged a bucket of holy water over his door, which disintegrated Ligur.

Then he held Hastur at bay with a spray bottle reportedly full of holy water. Unfortunately Hastur saw it drip on Crowley and realized that it wasn't holy water, so Crowley had to escape. He jumped into the phone lines and Hastur followed after him, but while Crowley was able to get out of the lines, Hastur was trapped in the "antique answering machine" (the book "Good Omens" was written in 1990 when answering machines were a bit more ubiquitous). Eventually, Hastur managed to gruesomely escape when a telemarketer dialed the number.
21. As Hastur found out, Armageddon was no longer taking place in the Middle East. Where was the final battle now taking place?

Answer: Airbase

Hell's operatives in the U.S. State Department had arranged for the ambassador and his family to have a tour of the Fields of Megiddo in the Middle East, where Armageddon was to take place. The Duke of Hell Hastur arrived for the event and was to serve as their archaeological guide, but he ignored the ambassador to speak with Warlock. Warlock, being a normal, obnoxious teenage boy, told Hastur that he "smell[ed] like poo". Hastur at first laughed, but when he realized that the Hellhound wasn't there and that Warlock didn't seem to realize who he was, Hastur knew he wasn't the Antichrist.

Instead, Armageddon had been moved to a U.S. airbase outside of Tadfield, the village in which Adam Young lived. The airbase wasn't used for flying operations anymore, but it served as a global communications center which made it easy for the Horsemen to start the nuclear war that would precede the battle between the armies of angels and demons.
22. Crowley had to drive through a massive wall of fire to get to the Armageddon site, causing his car to be covered in flames. What happened to his Bentley when he reached the site?

Answer: It exploded

Crowley's purpose on Earth was to help gain souls for his Master, and while the Dukes of Hell bragged about securing souls through temptation, Crowley preferred more elaborate measures. Unfortunately, he was sometimes a victim of his own evil plans - like the time he brought down all the mobile phone networks in London and then couldn't call Aziraphale. One of Crowley's masterpieces was modifying the M25 London orbital to resemble a demonic rune that turned into a flaming ring of fire as Armageddon was about to begin, but again he fell victim to his work as he needed to cross the ring. Crowley decided to just drive through the fire, and when the Duke of Hell Hastur materialized in his car, Hastur burned up but not Crowley. We were told it was because Crowley had imagination. Crowley's car however did catch fire, and it was aflame the entire way to the airbase.

But shortly after he exited the vehicle, it exploded, causing Crowley to drop to his knees in despair, lamenting that he'd had it for ninety years without a scratch.
23. The Four Horsemen had set off the launch sequence for nuclear weapons around the world that the national owners couldn't override. How were the weapons finally deactivated?

Answer: Newt touched the computer.

The Four Horsemen were launching Armageddon at the airbase because it contained a global communications center. They set off the nuclear weapons and locked the system so that their commands couldn't be overwritten. Anathema and Newt had broken into the airbase, and when the Four Horsemen left the building to meet with Adam, Anathema and Newt entered it. Anathema asked Newt to disable the weapons, since he had told her he was a computer engineer, but he had to confess that he was more skilled at breaking computers rather than working with them.

She then told him to try and repair it: "Every computer you try to fix dies, so fix it". He tried and proceeded to take the system down which released control of the weapons back to their national owners.
24. After the Four Horsemen were vanquished, the angel Gabriel and the demon Beelzebub showed up at the Armageddon site and unsuccessfully tried to get Adam to start the battle. Who next appeared to deal with Adam?

Answer: Satan

Both Gabriel and Beelzebub (Anna Maxwell Martin) tried to convince Adam of the necessity of Armageddon, but he wasn't buying it: "You both want to start a war to see whose gang is best". But when Aziraphale asked whether the great plan was the ineffable plan, Crowley realized that neither Gabriel nor Beelzebub knew what the ineffable plan was.

They both said they'd have to check with their home offices. But as Beelzebub left, she told Adam that she was telling his dad. Adam wasn't worried because he was thinking she meant Mr. Young, but it was Satan (Benedict Cumberbatch) who appeared. Adam was ready for him though.

He accused him of being an absentee father: "Dads don't wait until you're eleven to show up. You're not my dad. You never were" .

The denial worked, and Satan vanished, leaving Adam to be a normal human boy. He apparently still had powers though as he was able to fix the damage done, including restoring Crowley's Bentley and Aziraphale's book shop, which had burned down when one of the circle of candles fell over.
25. In the end, Crowley and Aziraphale had to face their punishment by their respective head offices. Crowley was sentenced to extinction by holy water, while Aziraphale was ordered to enter a tower of flames from Hell. How did they survive their terminal punishments?

Answer: They switched bodies.

Crowley had managed to save Anathema's book from the fire in Aziraphale's book store, and when he saw her at the airbase, he tossed it back to her, but a prophecy fell out of it, and Aziraphale caught it. The prophecy said to "choose your faces wisely, for soon enough ye will be playing with fire".

When Aziraphale and Crowley were later getting an ice cream in the park, they were both captured by their respective forces and brought home for punishment. Heaven and Hell worked together through back channels to provide the necessary tools: The Archangel Michael brought holy water to Hell for Crowley's bath, and a demon brought a tower of flames to Heaven to incinerate Aziraphale.

But the punishment didn't go as planned. Crowley splashed around in his bath and even asked for a rubber duck, while Aziraphale stood in the fire and spewed flames at Gabriel and the other angels.

The angels and demons decided that Crowley and Aziraphale were no longer purely an angel and a demon so they were returned to Earth and left alone, at least for now.

While they were sitting together on a park bench, laughing about the rubber duck, they changed bodies. It turned out that they had accurately interpreted the prophecy and were ready when their respective forces abducted them.
