Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who spilled the beans regarding of the Earl of Leicester's marriage to Lady Essex?

Answer: Simier

The author of the pamphlet lost his hand as a group of people, the Queen, Anjou, Simier and some of the Queen's court watched. Leicester had pointed that the people had little stomach for the marriage. Elizabeth then said she had little stomach for the people and disappeared into the palace. Simier then asked Leicester how his wife was. Elizabeth then appeared stunned and asked him if he was really married. Leicester was married to Elizabeth's cousin Lettice Knollys, granddaughter of Mary Boleyn Carey.
2. When Elizabeth was shown a letter implicating Mary Stuart in a plot against her, what was on the letter?

Answer: Gallows

Walsingham handed her a coded letter which his men intercepted with a gallows drawn on the letter. Elizabeth wondered if he, one of his men or Mary herself drew the gallows.
3. What did Mary wear at her execution?

Answer: Red dress

The executioner removed her outer dark color dress that acted as a long jacket (for lack of the actual name). The dress was red, the color of a Catholic martyr. Someone in the crowd had mentioned that it was the color of a Catholic martyr.
4. Who was present at the execution of Mary Stuart?

Answer: The Earls of Essex and Leicester

Leicester was the first one to sign the execution warrant and offered to witness the deed. With him was his stepson, the Earl of Essex. Leicester wondered if he could tell the Queen what happened and still keep her love.
5. What military rank did Leicester hold?

Answer: General

Elizabeth had called him a fireside general due to him losing the battle and returning slightly ill.
6. Where did Elizabeth make her speech prior to The Enterprise of England?

Answer: Tilbury

There she made her famous speech and appeared to get help for the speech from Leicester and Essex. This is revealed during the conversation between the Queen, Leicester and Essex.
7. Who was deathly ill at this place following the victory?

Answer: Leicester

Leicester was ill upon his return from the Low Countries and groaned a couple of times on his way to Tilbury. After it was proven that the English won the battle, Essex looked to his right for Leicester only to find him on the ground in pain.
8. Where did The Earl of Leicester take his final breath?

Answer: At the palace

Although the show shows that Leicester died in the palace, in truth he died at Oxford on his way home, possibly in a litter, a carriage or a horse. As he was so sick, he might not have been on a horse as he probably wouldn't have made it on a horse.
9. Who was with The Earl of Leicester when he died?

Answer: Queen Elizabeth and The Earl of Essex

In the show, Queen Elizabeth and The Earl of Essex were tenderly attending Leicester as he lay dying. Leicester said that even though he wasn't Essex's father he still loved him like his son. In reality, no one was present as he was on his way to Bath to take the waters.
10. As the Queen was speaking outside the church following the victory, what was hanging outside the church?

Answer: Banners

After Leicester's death the Queen was speaking outside the church calling the banners "captured banners". She also spoke of "those we've lost", an obvious nod to the recent death of her favorite Leicester.
