Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While making their way through the area known as the Dark Territory, Jack, Kate, Locke and Hurley encountered many strange and unusual sights and sounds. While pausing to see an eerie shadow loop by, two brightly colored flowers of which color(s) stood apart from their green surroundings (near Jack and Kate)?

Answer: Yellow and red

On their path toward the hatch, carrying the dynamite on their backs, the four cautiously weaved through the properly titled "Territoire Foncé": the Dark Territory. Nearby, as Jack and Kate approached the front of the group, they passed two unmistakably prominent flowers. One was bright yellow, seen in the far shot of the group approaching. (It was hidden from their view by a giant green leaf, but plainly visible to the audience.) The other was bright red and seen directly behind Jack in the closer (and further) shot.

The color red has appeared in several episodes and represented rather unfortunate events and premonitions (such as Boone forecasting his own death by mentioning the red shirts of the characters that were killed in "Star Trek").
2. While venturing through the strange "Dark Territory", which of these events occurred second?

Answer: A creepy shadow passed by ahead, behind some plants

The Dark Territory was a breeding ground for strange events.
First, after an ear-splitting call, an enormous bird (or, was it the camera angle?) flew from a swinging branch overhead, above Jack. Then there passed a creepy shadow that almost had a shadow itself (one which, to those with far-fetched imaginations, resembled an airplane) trailing behind it behind the vegetation. Here, Kate turned to Jack and answered his unasked question- "Yeah, I saw it." This was followed by an even creepier noise. Hurley spoke for everyone when he said aloud, "Whoever named this place 'Dark Territory'? Genius."
After an unusual creature-like noise and a hesitant pause, a familiar and deafening roar burst through the thick island air. This only one thing: the security system had been activated!
It appears that the "monster" appears from the ground, often uprooting trees in the process, and brings with it a cloud of strange smoke. He did not run, but instead began approaching the roaring.
3. Locke never runs from the monster in this part of the episode, but instead approaches it.

Answer: False

When the monster appeared, Locke stared ahead in awe and amazement as he began to approach it. Jack called out to him to stop, but Locke seemed oblivious to all but what laid ahead. With crashes and roars the monster burst upward once again and knocked Locke to the ground. As he stared straight up at it, Locke had a plain view of whatever it was that was approaching him and his look of amazement transformed into terror. (In an interview with Terry O'Quinn, he mentioned that he was told to look at the "monster" as though it were the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Hmmm...) This scene was the first truly unrealistic and Jurassic Park-like scene which had been presented in the series ("Lost" had a great ability to create very realistic situations despite the unusual environment and circumstances). Here, Locke was lifted and hauled across the land by whatever held him in its clutch. Jack followed behind him and grabbed Locke's hands just before he was pulled into the hole (into which the monster had disappeared). Locke's behavior was even more surprising when he ordered Jack to let him go and he would be alright. (It is later revealed that he believed he was being "tested".) Jack instead ordered Kate to toss a dynamite stick from HIS pack, which may or may not have injured the thing below. Upon closer examination, just after the dynamite explosion a very strange cloud of smoke returns with very unnatural behavior. While most smoke will disintegrate upon release, this smoke instead gathers together into a funnel shape and then follows itself as it vanishes into thin air, almost as though it were living.
Question? Locke and possibly Jack had plain view of the monster- why didn't anyone ask what it was? (Besides keeping the mystery alive for season two, of course.)
By the way, after approaching, being knocked down and "seeing" the monster, Locke had finally decided to run- though it was too late.
4. As the raft sails into the sunset, celebrating its first night at sea, Michael asks Jin about the book Sun had made for him. Jin reveals several new English words he has learned. Which word is Jin not heard speaking during the episode?

Answer: Stop

While Jin was reattaching the rudder that Sawyer had rescued, Michael discovered the book beneath Jin's watch. It is made apparent in this episode that Michael and Jin are effectively able to communicate in English/Korean, as either will often give orders and interpret the returned message. Jin mentions the word he read for Sun, "starboard", as well as "raft", "port", "sail", and (to Michael's amusement) "eat". Michael tells Jin how lucky he is, which Jin seems to understand despite the language boundary. Jin says "Sun" when Michael inquires about the book and "Sawyer" later when he jumps into the water after him. To show his friendship for Michael, Jin also says the word "you" when he gives the watch for Michael to keep.

After the long journey, it was clear that Jin never intended to return watch for Mr. Paik and that he had finally "broken free".
5. Does Claire take the tea that Sun offers to her?

Answer: Yes

Claire sat alone, exhausted and bewildered in the caves as she pondered what had happened to her infant son. Sun approached and offered Claire tea, which she at first refused but then later accepted. Sun told Claire that the name she had chosen, Aaron, was beautiful and she asked what it meant. Claire replied that she did not know the meaning, and Sun assured her that Charlie would bring the baby back.
According to most baby name guides, "Aaron" means things such as "shining light" (in the hatch?), "messenger" (for the "others"?), and even "high mountain" (there are plenty of those on the island).
In a biblical sense, which may be even more significant, Aaron was the brother of Moses who led the infamous "Exodus", which gave title to the episode.
In a scene depicting a conversation between Charlie and Claire as they watched Rousseau (which was deleted from the final "Exodus" episode due to time constrictions) Claire explained why she was superstitious about naming the baby. (Because she knew the "others" would return for him.)
Also notable is that Claire was the only of the main survivors who did not have a flashback of her own while she was in the airport before boarding the plane.
6. In Hurley's flashback, the dreaded numbers appeared all around him as he scrambled from the hotel in order to make the flight before departure. Which did not relate according to the "numbers"?

Answer: Number of minutes Hurley said (on the phone) until he needed his car ready

Hurley awoke in a sunlit hotel room the day of the flight and found a blank alarm clock- his electrical socket had burned up. In a panic, Hurley packed his bags as his yelled into the phone that tomorrow (today, with the time change) was his mother's birthday and that he needed his car in 20 minutes. (Also, his confirmed flight on the plane was 20G, although this wasn't one of the "numbers".) Obviously, exiting from hotel room 2342 predicted that his bad luck was just beginning.

As his car broke down, all of the "numbers" were seen on the dashboard. (Originally his speed was 15 kph, which fell to 8 kph, which fell to 4 kph.

His temperature was 23 degrees Celsius and his miles were 42 kilometers.) In the airport, Hurley offered to pay an old man with a scooter first $500, the $1600. (The man's hat read "Crazy Eights Casino" with dice around it.) And while riding the scooter to Gate 23, he passed a team of girls in team jerseys bearing each of the numbers in consecutive order.
7. What three letters and/or numbers appeared on the front of the woman in the hotel elevator's shirt?

Answer: AUS

Most would bet the back read "815".
In the elevator there were eight people. To the far right (in back)was a man in a business suit; in front of him, a man in a cowboy hat; the woman with the "AUS" shirt was in the very front, looking very annoyed; there was another man and a young boy beside her. This was in the shot of the right half. In the left half were a bored-looking mother and another boy (standing beside a luggage cart) and Charlie in the very left corner! Yet another unexpected encounter which revealed that Hurley and Charlie (and possibly Walt and Michael?) stayed at the same hotel before boarding the plane.
As Hurley looked at the crowded elevator he raced for the exit and Charlie yelled after him, "Some of us have a bloody flight to make!"
8. When Hurley finally arrived on line in the International Terminal, yet another of the main 815 passengers was recognized behind him.

Answer: False

After barreling through the hotel lobby, and managing a car failure Hurley finally arrived at the Sydney Airport. He then proceeded to race with his luggage, sweating and panting, to the counter to get his ticket. (Interestingly, as this occurred an announcement was repeating that "Flight 917" was now boarding.) The woman finally turned over the ticket for seat 20G with an "uh-oh".

It turned out Hurley needed to be in the International Terminal, and was in fact in Domestic. The woman added, "I don't think you're meant to make this flight, dear", to which Hurley replied by racing towards International. He arrived in a line after running up an escalator, passing exactly 42 people. Hurley was the last on line, and therefore no other Oceanic 815 passengers were recognized behind him.

However, at the front of the line where Hurley had tried to cut through the audience recognized Arzt behind a traveler pulling out a compact laptop computer.
9. What color was the flag on the old man's scooter?

Answer: Red

Hurley ran through a blur of the numbers in the airport before borrowing the scooter and arriving at Gate 23 as it was being closed. (This was the same gate many other main 815 survivors were seen entering or nearby, including Shannon and Boone in a previous episode.) The number 23 also apparently meant something to Kate when Hurley said it aloud on the island- it was a reward of $23,000 for which she had been turned in to Australian police.
And once again the color red emerged, along with the evil numbers. A woman in red was walking behind Hurley as he raced through the terminal and there was a red flag on the old man's scooter.
Hurley made a religious reference as well when he stuffed the ticket into the machine and begged to the attendant, "Please, for the love of all that is good and holy in this world, let me on the plane!" The woman looked at his desperation and called over the walkie-talkie that they had one more passenger (she also mentioned that her name was Jenna). She told Hurley that, "This is your lucky day". This makes one consider the true "luck" of the numbers. That day, the numbers had seemingly prevented Hurley in every possible way from making it to the plane, which was doomed. Hurley had fought the numbers, and won, which landed him in a place which one might consider to harbor the worst luck possible. So were the numbers, in fact, not bad luck after all?
10. That evening on the raft, after arguing about very different parenting techniques, Michael believed he had discovered the reason why Sawyer wanted on the raft so badly. He said, "Since the day you told me you wanted on the raft, I couldn't figure it out. Why does a guy who only cares about himself want to risk his life to save everyone else? The way I see it there are only two choices. You're either a _______, or you want to die."

Answer: hero

While the raft drifted quietly through the darkness, Sawyer turned on the transmitter in hopes of picking up a signal (despite Michael's reminders that the batteries may not sustain for the weeks they may be out there). Sawyer told Michael that one thing he liked about him was that he had the patience of a saint (another minor religious reference) for putting up with Walt's behavior.

When Michael questioned about Sawyer's father and learned that he had shot himself, Michael believed that was the reason Sawyer wanted to die. Sawyer partially admitted this, saying that he was no hero. Suddenly there was a beep on the radar, with a target moving in from the west (the left side of the screen). Michael said quietly, "Something is out there," as a ripple rolled in the horizon ahead. In the events which followed Sawyer (in addition to already saving the rudder), proved Michael wrong on his hero theory.
11. Did Locke enter Flight 815 at Gate 23?

Answer: Yes

Locke was seated in his wheelchair in the International Departure Lounge of Sydney Airport, waiting for the special chair for assisting the disabled onto the plane. Locke's spirit was obviously crushed (along with his hopes of accomplishing the Walkabout) as he sat silently, a very different person than the Locke on the island. (Then again, were there any survivors that had not changed?) When the flight attendants told Locke that the handicapped chair was missing, he opted to bear the humiliation of being carried onto the plane rather than wait until the next day. (Notice one of the flight attendants who assist Locke is Jenna, the same who would later help Hurley secure entrance to the plane.) Locke is one of the first aboard the near-empty plane, and is unable to retrieve a brochure from the ground when it is dropped.
Yet on the island, Locke was carrying a torch and leading the way to the hatch.
Although Gates 1 through 13 could be seen behind him, the passengers in the International Lounge were heading through Gate 23, which was directly ahead. (Obviously, the number was not a curse to Locke.)
12. When finally arriving at the hatch and preparing to blow it open, Locke told Hurley to take the extra __________ back several hundred yards.

Answer: Sticks

When Locke, Jack, Kate and Hurley finally reached the hatch work ensued right away to blow it open. Locke and Jack attached the dynamite to the hinge and Kate unraveled the fuse. Locke turned to Hurley and casually said, "Hugo, take these sticks back a couple hundred yards". Hurley did a double take, stunned at being acknowledged by his real name.
The question; how did Locke know Hugo was Hurley's real name? It could be infinite and supernatural wisdom, or it could be that Jack told him (though either theory is questionable). Remember, Hurley told Jack that his real name was Hugo Reyes when conducting the island census.
Either way, Hurley discovered the numbers on the hatch the same way Locke and Boone first discovered the hatch itself when he dropped his flashlight. (Meanwhile, Jack mentioned to Kate about making a "judgment call", saying that if they all were to survive the night they would be facing a lock problem. Or was it a Locke problem?)
When seeing the 4-8-15-16-23-42 inscribed in the metal before him, Hurley knew that the hatch was bad luck and should not be opened. Yet when he yelled for Locke to stop, Locke lit the fuse and set off the dynamite.
Hurley panicked and tried to stop it, but the explosion rattled the air around them.
When Locke and Jack approached the torn ground and removed the singed metal, they found themselves staring into an endless tunnel with a broken ladder. (An exit from the inside?) A glance at each other revealed disbelief at what lay before their eyes. No one would know until season two what the hatch contained. Had they just opened Pandora's Box?
13. Below the radar screen tracking incoming signals were two knobs, one located on either side. Beneath each knob were words defining their purpose. Which word did not appear?

Answer: Distance

The button on the left side of the transmitter said "range and marks" and the right side said "trace and adjust".
On the raft, Michael had warned Sawyer against using the transmitter because they were only 15 miles out (the numbers...). That's a long way to swim back from the raft wreckage, yet too close to be found by passing ships.
On land, Charlie and Sayid finally found the source of the black smoke- a signal fire on the shore, with no footprints surrounding it. (Therefore, it could not have been Danielle who had set her own fire. Instead, the "others" must have come from the sea, just like Ethan when he murdered Scott.) Charlie believed that Danielle started the fire and that there were no "others". The audience may be inclined to believe this, yet listen closely to her words: "I heard them whispering. They said they were coming for the child. The others said they were coming for the boy..." Though distraught and confused by her own actions, hoping to trade Aaron for Alex when the "others" arrived, Danielle was not crazy in that the "others" were coming for the boy. However, it was never Aaron whom they wanted...
14. When the light from the "rescue boat" finally shined upon them, all of the survivors on the raft jumped for joy. In the excitement, Walt hugged Jin.

Answer: True

While tracking the signal, whether it were a hunk of floating junk or a rescue craft, hope surrounded the raft for what could possibly be their first contact with the outside world since the crash- and their ticket off the island.
Sawyer first threatened and then convinced Michael- along with Walt's pleading- to use their only flare. Michael prayed, "Please God" (religious reference) as a shot fired and a glowing streak flashed into the night sky.
We already know that the boat was moving off the screen to the left, most likely on its way to the west side of the island where the black smoke was located. Instead, it appeared back on the screen. After several moments of listening and waiting, a bright white light flooded the raft- rescue had arrived! Sawyer, Jin, Walt and Michael waved and cheered, overcome with joy and relief. (Walt, in fact, hugged Jin before he hugged Michael.) But when the strangers arrived, it became something quite different.
A scruffy bearded man (notice there were four "others" on board) first asked what they were doing so far out -from the world, or from the island?- and then told Michael they were going to have to "take the boy". Elation quickly turned to confusion and terror as Sawyer reached into his waistband to draw the gun.
Another passenger on the boat was faster. Sawyer was shot and fell into the water. Jin immediately jumped in after him. Meanwhile two "others" came aboard the raft and attacked Michael, dragging Walt onto their craft. Michael fell into the water as well and escaped before the raft blew to pieces as his son shouted in terror, and the "others" sped away into the night.
Notice carefully that the person with long blonde hair on board the boat who threw the bomb is, in fact, a woman- could it be Rousseau's lost child Alex?
And what would become of the kidnapped Walt and the three survivors lost at sea?
15. In the very last scenes of "Exodus", many events occur and yet no words are spoken. A glimpse is taken back to the day on which the survivors boarded Oceanic Flight 815, unaware that their destiny was about to change (whether or not they believed in fate). Who was the first person seen entering the plane?

Answer: Claire

Back on the day they boarded Flight 815, 40 days ago, the group of survivors were merely strangers flying from Sydney to Los Angeles and blissfully unaware of the misfortune which lay ahead.
A very pregnant Claire first entered the plane, (wearing the necklace which symbolizes "love") on her way to give up her unborn child for adoption. She is helped by a stranger, Dr. Arzt, who puts her things in the compartment. Kate was led aboard in handcuffs on her way to prison, thinking in amazement at the events which had led her to that point. Sawyer followed, rejected from society and continuing his hunt for the man whom he was known as. The paralyzed Locke looked up from his seat at Jack, who stood above in his suit and was about to put his father to rest. (They made eye contact and exchanged cordial smiles.) Charlie was nearby, stuffing his guitar case into the crowded space and craving for his fix. (On the island, when Charlie returns Aaron to Claire, the statue of the Virgin Mary in which the heroin was concealed reaches out from his belongings. Did he take the temptation, or just the faith?) Sayid sat alone, feeling the accusing eyes of a fellow passenger who viewed him as a terrorist. He pulled out the photo of Nadia given to him by the CIA (not the one which she had signed), dreaming of meeting her at the end of the flight. Sun and Jin sat silently together (unable to be further apart) as Jin stared blankly at the watch which held him prisoner- there was no doubt where his future would lead. Michael fastened the seatbelt of a son he knew as well as a stranger, while Walt refused to look up at his father. Shannon fumbled nervously through her bags as Boone handed her the asthma inhaler, which she gratefully accepted. Finally Hurley arrived, sweaty and gasping for breath, grinning at having been so "lucky" to make this flight. As he walked by, Walt finally gave a genuine smile as Hurley gave him the thumbs up (they knew each other!) Hurley put on his music and pulled out "La Linterna Verde", the Spanish comic book featuring the polar bear and the island in a dome.
They came from all walks of life, speaking many languages and going many places. Yet together fourteen would find a different journey, in search of what was lost before boarding Oceanic.
To be continued... Stay tuned for season two, folks!
