The twenty fifth Academy Awards were held in March 1953 in both Los Angeles, hosted by Bob Hope, and New York, hosted by Conrad Nagel, and the winners were divided between the two cities. For the very first time, the Awards ceremony was televised and 'The Greatest Show on Earth' received the Best Picture Oscar. The Oscars were televised for the first time in colour in 1966.

The Oscars have traditionally been held in late March, but, due to falling TV ratings, the Oscars were moved to late February in 2004 with the aim of raising the TV ratings. Academy Members complained that it would give too little time to rate films from the end of the year, but, the final ballots for the Academy Awards will occur very early in February, and, the show must go on!
