Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rule numbers 1, 2, and 3 all have two rules each. One set of rules are Gibbs' own personal rules. The other set of 3 came from whom?

Answer: Mike Franks

Mike Franks was Agent Gibbs' first partner at NCIS. Franks spent his time in Mexico after his retirement. Every once in a while, a case would come up which would require Mike Franks' help, and when it was over, Franks would go back to his beach house in Mexico.
2. "Rule number 8 is gonna save you, McGee!" What exactly is Gibbs' rule number 8?

Answer: Never take anything for granted

Abby- "Rule number 8 is gonna save you, McGee!"
Tony- "Never date a co-worker?"
Ziva- "Never go anywhere without a knife."
Gibbs- "Never take anything for granted."

This rule was mentioned in the episode "Probie." McGee was accused of killing an undercover cop from Metro. McGee was convinced that he killed an innocent police officer, but Abby pulled out rule number 8, and eventually, McGee was cleared.
3. Rule number 10 is a rule that Agent Gibbs has said that he has struggled with in the past. What rule is rule number 10?

Answer: Never get personally involved in a case

In the season 7 episode "Obsession," the team investigates a man's death, and Agent DiNozzo became infatuated with the man's sister, whom he has had no prior interaction. Near the end, Gibbs and Tony talk.

Gibbs- "You okay?"
Tony- "Not really, I broke rule number 10...again. Never get personally involved in a case."
Gibbs- "Yeah, that's the one I've always had the most trouble with."

Clearly, Gibbs was aware that the rules he lived by were not always easy.
4. There are two forms of rule number one. One of these, according to Gibbs himself, is more important than all the others. What rule supersedes all the others?

Answer: Never screw over your partner

During the episode "Blowback," Gibbs and Director Shepard are discussing his rules.

Gibbs- "Number one supersedes all of the others."
Shepard- "Never screw your partner?"
Gibbs- "Never screw OVER your partner."

Rule number one is based on Gibbs' history as a Marine. Marines are loyal to their partners and units, hence the Marine term "semper fidelis" (always faithful). After his Marine days, he keeps the Marine attitude in his work at NCIS, including the most important of all, always stick with your partner.
5. When Tony DiNozzo first joined NCIS, the first rule that he learned from Gibbs is rule number 5. Gibbs told him that he didn't have many rules (at the time), but that rule number 5 is __________.

Answer: Don't waste good

Tony was talking to Agent Gibbs after he left Baltimore homicide. Tony's partner, Danny, was revealed to be a dirty cop. Tony couldn't take it, and decided to resign from Baltimore. He came to Gibbs and told him that he didn't know what he was going to do.

Tony- "I don't think I'm cut out to be a cop."
Gibbs-slaps Tony on the back of the head
Tony- "Did you just physically assault me?"
Gibbs- "I don't have a lot of rules, but rule number 5 is, you don't waste good. You're good."

Gibbs proved his point to DiNozzo by pointing him in the direction of the Human Resources office. Tony goes in on Gibbs' advice, and the rest is history.
6. There is an age that everyone goes through where keeping secrets is fun. Gibbs' rule number 4 is about secrets, and it's not about fun, but according to Gibbs, the best way to keep a secret is what?

Answer: Keep it to yourself

Shepard- "It's your fault you know?"
Gibbs- "For what, leaving or coming back?"
Shepard- "For teaching me your rules. Best way to keep a secret, keep it to yourself. Second best, tell one other person IF YOU MUST! There is no third best."

Gibbs made sure that people he worked for were aware that the more a secret is told, the more likely it is to be revealed.
7. Agent Gibbs is good at keeping the majority of his rules, but he is really good at keeping rule number 11. Fill in the last part of rule 11: when the job is done, ______________.

Answer: walk away

In the season 6 episode "Semper Fidelis," Gibbs and DiNozzo were discussing rule number 11.

Gibbs- "Rule number 11, DiNozzo."
Tony- "I would never date a co-work boss, trust me. I mean why would you even...that's 12, 11, when the job is done, walk away."

Gibbs is very good at this rule, as every time a case ends, all he does at the end is walk away.
8. Rule number 69 involves women, something in which Gibbs has dealt with through three marriages. Speaking to FBI Agent Fornell in the episode "Devil's Triangle," Gibbs says, "Never trust a woman ________."

Answer: who doesn't trust her man

"Devil's Triangle" is an episode that involved the ex-wife of both Agent Gibbs and Agent Fornell, Diane Sterling. Her husband, Victor Sterling was abducted and Gibbs and his team did what they could to find him. Gibbs and Fornell never did truly love Diane, and she never did trust them. "Rule 69, never trust a woman who doesn't trust her man." He never trusted her, because she never trusted him.
9. According to Gibbs' rule number 27, how many ways are there to follow someone?

Answer: 2

In the episode "Jacknife," Gibbs told his team that rule number 27 was, "There are two ways to follow. The first way, they never notice you, the second way, they only notice you." The team knew this rule and quoted it with Jethro.
10. There are some rules that have not actually been spoken. One in particular was written down on a piece of paper. Gibbs wrote on this paper, rule number 51. What is rule number 51?

Answer: sometimes you're wrong

After dealing with a particularly difficult case, Gibbs was remembering Shannon, his first wife. Shannon was the one who gave him the idea for his life's rules. He wrote rule number 51 down at the end of the episode, "Rule 51." His rule said, "Sometimes you're wrong." This proved that even Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs was wrong once in a while.
