The pair was indirectly responsible for the still mortal Petrova doppelganger (Katherine) becoming unsuitable for the Sun and Moon ritual as she turned into a vampire. Trevor was killed by Elijah, but Rose was left alive and ended up helping Damon try and keep Elena safe.

In the season 2 episode, Klaus sent messages to Elena, although at this point he was not in his own body, but that of Alaric Saltzman.

John Gilbert had a fling with Isobel Flemming before she was married to Alaric Saltzman, and the union resulted in a child - Elena. Grayson and Miranda had been trying to have a child for a long time, so it was decided that John's brother would adopt his niece, making Elena Jeremy's cousin.

In the season 2 episode "Crying Wolf", Alaric Saltzman mentioned Elijah. Caroline got too much attention from Matt and Tyler, so in the season 2 episode "The Descent", right after being kissed by Tyler she said she's getting kissed too much.
