Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The very first starting line of the first "Amazing Race" was in front of what Central Park attraction?

Answer: Bethesda Fountain

Back in 2001, eleven teams embarked on the first-ever "Amazing Race", commencing a nine-country trip around the globe for a million dollars. The first starting line was smack-dab in the center of Central Park in the middle of Manhattan, and teams had to race up the stairs in front of Bethesda Fountain to collect their clues, grab their bags, and be told that they would be heading to Johannesburg, South Africa to grab a charter flight to Zambia. Their first challenge would, of course, be getting to the airport.

This first-ever leg of the race aired less than a week before the September 11th attacks in New York City, having been filmed six months earlier.
2. The winners of the first "Amazing Race" crossed the finish line in what New York borough?

Answer: Queens

In the thirteenth and final leg of the first "Amazing Race", Rob and Brennan and Frank and Margarita crossed the finish line in first and second in front of the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows Park, completing a 35,000-mile race around the world. Third place team Joe and Bill were still completing tasks in Alaska having fallen so far behind the lead teams.

In this final leg of the race, teams also had to visit Vincent Daniels Square in Queens to get their final clue.
3. In "The Amazing Race 2", teams had to fly from Brazil to South Africa. Which team was last to arrive, partly due to a flight taking them through New York City?

Answer: Peggy and Claire

In the third leg of "The Amazing Race 2", teams left South America and headed to South Africa, but due to a severe lack of flights across the Atlantic, many teams had to take extensive flight plans, often with several layovers in other countries, to make it to Cape Town. Peggy and Claire (the 'Gutsy Grannies') ended up arriving more than a day after the other teams because their flight from Brazil to JFK to Heathrow to Cape Town ended up having too narrow a connection to make.

After reaching Robben Island, they went straight to the third Pit Stop in Stellenbosch.
4. The starting line for "The Amazing Race 8" was in what New York City neighbourhood?

Answer: Dumbo

"The Amazing Race 8" started at the edge of the East River, Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. During this unique 'Family Edition' of the race, the teams of four were told to hop into their vehicles, read their clues, and head into Manhattan to pick up camping gear at Eastern Mountain Sports in SoHo.

This was followed by a drive up to East 91st Street to be handed a clue by "Amazing Race 1" racers Kevin and Drew before they left the city altogether, bound for Pennsylvania.
5. "The Amazing Race: Family Edition" both began and ended in New York City.

Answer: False

While the race ended in New York State, it actually ended about four hundred miles northwest in Lewiston, New York at the Joseph Davis State Environmental Park. Here, the final three teams of four completed their final Road Block and ran on foot to the finish line where the Linz Family won the million dollars. Surprisingly, this is one of only a handful of seasons in which the race begins and ends in the same U.S. state, even if not the same city altogether.
6. The final leg of "The Amazing Race 10" took teams through Manhattan looking for what outdoor statue?

Answer: Alamo

The twelfth and final leg of "The Amazing Race 10" was a marathon in every respect as teams traveled from Barcelona, Spain to Paris, France and then to New York City to round out their last sprint. In New York, teams had to locate a clue box in the Daily New Building, then use a picture to locate the Alamo statue at Lafayette Street and 8th Street on foot.

The finish line was not in New York City; teams had to take a taxi to St. Basil Academy in Garrison, New York. Tyler and James won this season.
7. The memorable 'Hello/Goodbye' Road Block on "The Amazing Race 21" was filmed at what New York City landmark?

Answer: The United Nations Headquarters

In this final leg of the race, three teams completed a series of tasks in New York City, heading to Coney Island and the Brooklyn Navy Yard before delivering pizza and visiting the U.N. buildings. In the final task of the race-- a Road Block-- one team member needed to match the hellos and goodbyes of the countries visited on the race and hoist them up flagpoles in front of the U.N. in the correct order to get their final clue. Race underdogs Josh and Brent ended up finishing this first, allowing them to go to the finish line in Gotham Hall and win the million dollar prize.
8. The start of "The Amazing Race 25" was unique in that it was the first time that which of these happened?

Answer: Non-racers were allowed to attend

"The Amazing Race 25" was the first instance in which the public was invited to witness the teams' departure on their race around the world, and they did so from the Duffy Square grandstands in the middle of Times Square. Opening their first clue, teams were allowed to ask onlookers about their first destination-- the finish line for the very first "Amazing Race" before they took taxis to Flushing Meadows Park and were told to fly to the U.S. Virgin Islands.

This season was also unique in that it was the first to start during the nighttime. Racers departed from Times Square while it was all lit up.
9. In the end of "The Amazing Race 27", teams completed a single task in New York City involving which of these?

Answer: The New York City Fire Department

Flying from Hong Kong to New York City in the end of "The Amazing Race 27", three teams headed to the NYC Fire Department Training Facility on Randall's Island to complete the first Road Block of the leg and while all three teams were close together then, the dismissal of two taxis led eventual winners Kelsey and Joey to remain ahead of the other two competing teams as they ended the race in the Hamptons.
10. The starting line for "The Amazing Race 30" had teams collecting their clues from within which of these in Washington Square Park?

Answer: A fountain

In "The Amazing Race 30", eleven hyper-competitive teams were told to collect their starting line clues from inside the large fountain in the center of Washington Square Park in the NYU campus south of Greenwich Village. Like "The Amazing Race 25", this season featured a public start, so all eleven teams were surrounded by throngs of fans and past racers as they collected the Route Info clues telling them to head to JFK and fly to Reykjavik, Iceland.
