Salute your Shorts Trivia Quiz

"Salute your Shorts" was one of the greatest, if not goofiest, shows on Nickelodeon in the early 1990s. Though many of the actors remain unknown, a couple made it big in other avenues. This is a starter quiz on it.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the nickname the campers give to their head counselor, Kevin Lee?

Answer: Ug

Kevin "Ug" Lee is played by Kirk Baily. He is known mainly for voicework in Japanese films, according to imdb.com. He must have been in his 30s when the show was made, because he was born in 1952--one year after my parents!
2. What is Donkey Lips' real name?

Answer: Eddie C. Gelfen

Donkey Lips is Eddie C. Gelfen, though he only uses his real name when trying to impress a girl. The others have nicknames, too. ZZ's last name is Ziff; I don't think we ever find out her first name (I assume ZZ is a melding of her first and last name), and Sponge's real name is never given, though his last name is Harris. Budnick is Bobby Budnick, Robert when Ug is mad at him (which is in every episode). ZZ is played by Megan Berwick, best known as Kathy Stantoni on "Full House." Sponge is played by Tim Eyster, Donkey Lips is Michael Bower (who became a well-known actor, seen in "Pleasantvill") and Budnick is child actor Danny Cooksey, now married with a daughter Zoe and a musician on the side.
3. We meet a new camper in the second, and final, season: Ronnie Pinsky. What is his claim to fame?

Answer: His parents own the Pinsky Salami company

Pinsky was played by Blake Soper, now known as Blake Sennett. Blake is probably the most famous of the bunch, as he acted in "Boy Meets World" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and has been acclaimed for his guitar playing in Rilo Kiley, with fellow child actor Jenny Lewis, and with The Elected.
4. We never see Dr. Kahn, the overseer of the camp.

Answer: True

Dr. Kahn is the omnipotent voice heard in every episode over the loudspeakers. He doesn't sound like he has a sense of humor, and starts out every speech with, "This is Dr. Kahn."
5. Which camper hasn't Dena gone on a date with or been interested in at one point on the show?

Answer: Sponge

Dena (Heidi Lucas) dated Budnick for two episodes of season 2 before they realized they were from different worlds (he a punk, she a rich kid). She went on a date with Donkey Lips to prove she was a nice person for the social in season 1, and Richie Garber was her love interest from another camp, when she played Cinderella in season 1, though he was all for ZZ.

She also had a thing for Michael Stein (Eric MacArthur) when he first came to camp, in the very first episode, and asked him out on a date (he turned her down; I don't think he was interested in women).

She also seemed interested in Pinsky when he first showed, too. But Sponge was the only camper she never showed interest in. Probably because he was too smart for her.
6. Why did Michael leave camp?

Answer: He went to Europe.

Michael Stein, played by Eric MacArthur, was Budnick's nemesis when he came to camp in the first episode. Budnick and Donkey Lips (who got a bit of a backbone later in the show) tormented him: unhinged his bed, made him steal from the girls' bunk to prove his cool, tried to get him in trouble with Ug, etc.

They even flew his underwear from the flagpole, hence the show's title. However, when Pinsky came around, Budnick didn't have as much fun, as Pinsky took every prank played on him in stride. Two of a kind.
7. Ug's girlfriend is whom?

Answer: Mona

Ug met Mona, who delivered the camp mail by boat, right after his "girlfriend" Rachel dumped him. The campers, in a rare occurrence, felt bad for Ug after they intercepted the "Dear Ug" letter, so figured Mona would bring him back to his normal, dim self. Ug was impressed by her ability to know every zip code for every town, and she thought he was exotic because he received mail from a faraway town code (Rachel's town) and it was love.
8. Telly wears glasses.

Answer: true

Telly Radford, played by Venus DeMilo Thomas, was the tomboy. She wore glasses in the first episode, and after Michael broke her glasses while performing his "initiation" to Budnick's secret society, she was forced to get contacts. Venus has been in many TV shows; she was in the first season of "Party of Five," another classic.
9. ZZ has a mission in life. What is it?

Answer: To make sure everyone is as environmentally friendly as she is.

ZZ is "green," though that word probably didn't exist as a buzzword at the time of the show. She gets made fun of often for it; Telly threatened to kick her out of their bunk for recycling their trash and turning off the power while they were showering and getting primped for the day.

The funniest episode was the one in which ZZ held a party to raise awareness and they performed the can-can stomp: stomping on aluminum cans while dancing in a circle, to make them easier to recycle, while Budnick yawns and plays an operatic song on his guitar.

He then starts shredding and changes it to the "Budnick Stomp."
10. An odd question: does Budnick sing "it makes me wanna fart" in both season openers, during the singalong of the theme song?

Answer: yes

"It's 'I hope we never part,' now get it right or pay the price!"

I found an actual copy of the DVD, both seasons, on nickclassics.com
