Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Some of my all time favorite characters were portrayed by this actor. This man hilariously played Gumby, Mr. Robinson and Buckwheat. Who is it?

Answer: Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy was on the show from 1980 to 1984 and is widely credited with revitalizing the show. One of his most popular characters, Buckwheat, was assassinated on camera and made for one of the most memorable of any "Saturday Night Live" shows I've ever seen.

As part of the ninety minutes of the show, news anchors kept coming back to the assassination in breaking news style and the whole thing played out in hilarious fashion. Murphy is also known for his standup comedy and has been in many movies including "Beverly Hills Cop" and "Coming to America." Do you remember when he tried his hand at singing too? He had a hit with the song "Party all the Time" in the 1980s.
2. Not even Tony Stark could help a particularly dismal season of "Saturday Night Live." Which actor was part of the show during the terrible 1985/1986 season?

Answer: Robert Downey Jr

Downey Jr was on that awful 1985/1986 season when Lorne Michaels decided to forgo actual comedians for actors. It did not work out. Downey Jr has had much more success as an actor, starting young and appearing in "1969", "Weird Science" and "Less Than Zero." He ran into some trouble in the late 1990s and was arrested numerous times for drug related offences.

He spent some time in state prison and then completely turned his life around. He is well known for his role in "Iron Man" and as Iron Man in the "Avenger" movies.
3. This actor has a huge movie career in both comedic and dramatic roles. All grown up now with a stint as a wedding singer, who is this airhead who was fired just as he was about to quit?

Answer: Adam Sandler

Adam Sandler started his career with small parts on TV, including on "The Cosby Show." He did stand up comedy at a young age and was noticed by Dennis Miller, who introduced him to Lorne Michaels. Sandler joined "Saturday Night Live" and made a name for himself through some memorable songs such as "The Chanukah Song." He was fired from the show in 1995 but claims he was going to quit anyway to focus on a movie career.

As an actor, he's all over the place. He has over thirty-five Golden Raspberry Award nominations which honour the worst in cinema.

He also has some stellar dramatic performances in movies such as "Punch Drunk Love" as well as "Uncut Gems" for which he won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead.
4. Known for his deadpan delivery, this actor, writer and comedian has played everything from a cat to a zombie to a weatherman stuck in a loop. Who is this hilarious comedic icon?

Answer: Bill Murray

Bill Murray!!! This man is a comedy giant and cultural icon. He got his start in improv and was on "Saturday Night Live" from 1977 to 1980. After he left the show he acted in many movies including "Ghostbusters", "Caddyshack", "Meatballs", "Lost in Translation" and "Groundhog Day." He is adored by fans but notoriously difficult to work with.

He has had tiffs with Chevy Chase, Sean Young, Harold Ramis and Sofia Coppola, to name just a few. He does not have an agent or manager but instead a personal phone number where you can leave a voice mail for him if you want to work with him (that he apparently rarely checks).
5. This next featured player has it all - awards, a TV career, a movie career and is a flamboyant New York City correspondent who describes New York's hottest clubs with strange descriptions and weird characters. Who is he?

Answer: Bill Hader

Bill Hader had a rocky introduction to show business, working long hours as a post-production assistant after moving to Los Angeles. He eventually was brought to Lorne Michael's attention after he formed his own improve group called "Animals from the Future" with three other men.

He joined "Saturday Night Live" in 2005 and is known for his impressions of everyone from Alan Alda to Clint Eastwood to Charlie Sheen. He is also very well known for his Weekend Update correspondent named Stefon who knows all the New York hotspots. Hader broke character and laughed his way through so much of Stefon's script.

After "Saturday Night Live", he has been active in both movies and on TV, co-creating his own dark comedy series called "Barry" which has earned numerous Emmy nominations.
6. He's impersonated Robert Goulet, George W. Bush and Alex Trebek. If this doesn't jog your memory, you need more cowbell! Who is this man?

Answer: Will Ferrell

Prior to the show, Ferrell was a member of the comedy group The Groundlings in Los Angeles. He joined "Saturday Night Live" in 1995 and stayed for seven memorable and hilarious seasons. His impersonations were fantastic and skits with him as Alex Trebek and Darrell Hammond as Sean Connery playing "Celebrity Jeopardy" are some of the funniest of the show.

Another incredibly memorable skit is of him playing the cowbell during a recording of the song "(Don't Fear) the Reaper." Ferrell has also had tons of success in movies, starring in "Anchorman", "Step Brothers" and "Talladega Nights."
7. This man, who plays a parody of himself in "30 Rock" and was involved in a horrible car crash, beat out Stephen Colbert for a spot on "Saturday Night Live." Who is he?

Answer: Tracy Morgan

Tracy Morgan was on "Saturday Night Live" from 1996 to 2003, portraying characters such as Brian Fellow and Astronaut Jones. After his time on the show ended, he joined "30 Rock" where he played a comedian named Tracy Jordan. This character was a caricature of himself and Morgan received an Emmy nomination for the role.

In June 2014 Morgan was in a minibus that was hit by another driver and he was seriously injured, suffering a broken leg and femur, broken nose, and several broken ribs. He spent quite a bit of time in rehab and didn't appear publicly again until June 2015.

He came back to host "Saturday Night Live" in October 2015.
8. He went up against Patrick Swayze in an audition for Chippendale dancers and lived in a van down by the river. Who is this over the top comedian?

Answer: Chris Farley

Before "Saturday Night Live" Farley was a member of the improv groups "Improv Olympic" and "Chicago's Second City Theatre." He was a member of "Saturday Night Live" from 1990 to 1995 and was fired at the same time as Adam Sandler. While on the show, he brought a chaotic, loud energy and some truly hilarious characters, including motivational speaker Matt Foley. Farley had some success in movies, appearing in "Coneheads", "Tommy Boy" and "Black Sheep." Farley was the original voice of "Shrek" and had recorded a good deal of the dialogue before he passed away in 1997 of an overdose of cocaine and morphine.

He had struggled with addiction to alcohol and drugs and had sought treatment numerous times.
9. This Canadian actor was on "SCTV" before joining "Saturday Night Live" and reprising his Ed Grimley character. Who is this amigo?

Answer: Martin Short

Martin Short joined "Saturday Night Live" in 1984 and brought so many memorable characters to the show, including Ed Grimley. He also did some awesome impressions including Jerry Lewis and Katherine Hepburn. He has had some success on the big screen, appearing in "Three Amigos" and the "Father of the Bride" remake.

He's also appeared on stage, receiving a Tony Award for his role in the Neil Simon play "The Goodbye Girl." In 2006 he had a one man show and appeared in character as Jiminy Glick who would bring up a random audience member to interview as part of the show.

These "random" audience members were often celebrities and included Jerry Seinfeld as his first guest.
10. This comedian has some of the funniest digital shorts ever seen on "Saturday Night Live" including one with Justin Timberlake about a rather unforgettable Christmas present. Who is this man?

Answer: Andy Samberg

Andy Samberg is a member of the comedy group The Lonely Island and stars in the TV comedy "Brooklyn Nine-Nine". Before joining "Saturday Night Live" he took advantage of You-Tube and made his own experimental films, gaining success and popularity online.

Many of these films were with two other comedians who made up the comedy group The Lonely Island with him and it is in part because of this success that he ended up on "Saturday Night Live." He made a number of digital shorts for the show including that notoriously famous one with Justin Timberlake that won a Creative Arts Emmy.

He's also been in a number of movies including "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping" and "Palm Springs."
