Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who went to paint Anne of Cleves for the King?

Answer: Hans Holbein

Henry vowed not to sign the treaty until he was satisfied of the princess' beauty so Cromwell called for Master Holbein. Hans Holbein vowed to paint Anne, provided she was beautiful; if not, he was to turn his attention to painting the other sister.
2. Besides the court painter for Henry, who else went to Cleves?

Answer: Christopher Mont

Christopher Mont escorted Hans Holbein to Cleves to paint Anne of Cleves and to iron out the details of the marriage treaty. The King had waived the dowry which would effectively make Anne penniless should the marriage falter.
3. Henry paid a surprise visit to Anne and couldn't stand the idea of marrying her.

Answer: True

Henry was taken by her picture but after meeting her he said, "I like her not." Cromwell was treading on thin ice because the King then felt he was forced to marry her since she was already there.
4. Thomas Cromwell: "No one doubts it sir, but I fancy it is not the flaxen lady to whom we are chiefly concerned that would be the Princess ______ the younger sister, our first approach mentioned the elder sister, the Princess Anna." Fill in the blank.

Answer: Amelia

Amelia of Cleves was trying to get Anne (briefly referred to as Anna) ready for her portrait to be painted but her jewels were sold and a clasp was broken. Anne was in bed, ready for her husband the King, and seemed unwilling to consummate their marriage but tried to distract him by trying to play cards and unsuccessfully trying to play the guitar.
5. Who was sewing Prince Edward a new shirt in Queen Anne's rooms?

Answer: Lady Elizabeth

Anne adored Henry's children but it was Elizabeth who was sewing in her chamber and had accidentally poked her finger with the needle. Anne soothed the child's finger and gave her a piece of candy after offering to correct a knot in the thread.
6. Where was the letter from The Duke of Cleves found?

Answer: Bolts of fabric

Bolts of fabric and new caps for the queen arrived from the milliner much to her delight. She gave two caps to her ladies in waiting, Lady Frances and Lady Margaret. I assume them to be King Henry's nieces Lady Frances Brandon and Lady Margaret Douglas, daughters of his sisters. When the ladies left Anne found the letter hidden in a bolt of one of the fabrics.
7. The Ambassador of Cleves turned out to be Emperor Charles.

Answer: False

Actually the reported Ambassador turned out to be Philip of Hesse who wore a false beard to gain entrance to the Queen. Robert Barnes and Thomas Cromwell had withdrawn when word of The Ambassador of Cleves came calling. The King paid a surprise visit to his wife and came close to arresting the strange man but Barnes and Cromwell came forward and vouched for the Queen.

It was Barnes who revealed who the man really was.
8. Fill in the blank: Anne of Cleves: "I could call myself Your Majesty's most loyal and obedient ______."

Answer: Sister

Furthermore she was given Richmond Palace and Hever Castle and a generous pension for life, provided she never left England. She didn't want to go home anyway. She herself suggested that she would call herself the King's sister.
9. Who comforted Anne outside her chambers?

Answer: Thomas Cranmer

Cromwell had warned Cranmer earlier to give comfort to the Queen and he knew right away the marriage was doomed. After Philip of Hesse, Barnes and Cromwell left, she was left alone with the King, who fell asleep. Anne went for a few minutes outside her room where Cranmer comforted her.
10. How did Anne of Cleves die in the episode?

Answer: She didn't

Anne of Cleves wasn't executed following the demise of her marriage to the King. The last scene was Anne and the scene faded to black; her death was not shown.
