Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the alien race conspiring with the Master to threaten Earth?

Answer: Kasaavin

The vaguely shaped energy beings are known as the Kasaavin. They are a race of alien spies who have been convinced by the Master to take over the Earth, killing most of the world's population by rewriting their DNA. The Doctor discovers that the Kassavin had been spying on individuals involved in the history of computing, starting the 1830s through Peter Barton in the early 21st century.

The Kaleds are the race that evolved into the Daleks, after they mutated due to radiation. The Krillitane were a race of bat-like creatures defeated by the Tenth Doctor in "School Reunion" (2006). And the Krynoid are a plant based race that infects a host and converts it into a Krynoid. The Fourth Doctor confronted them in "The Seeds of Doom" (1976).
2. What seat does Ryan find the instructions for flying the plane in?

Answer: Seat 4C

The instructions were in seat 4C. The Doctor installed plates with Ryan's name when the plane was first built, directing him to the instructions. He used them to hook up his phone and pilot the plane until it landed automatically in Essex.

The Doctor set up the plan to rescue the Gang on the plane AFTER she had saved the Earth from the alien invasion.
3. What was the name of the lady scientist the Doctor encountered in the alien transport nexus?

Answer: Ada

Ada Gordon (later Lovelace) (1815-1852) was a colleague of Charles Babbage. She is widely recognized as the first person to recognize the potential for computing, and was one of the earliest computer programmers. Gordon was the daughter of Lord Byron, the poet.

The Doctor encounters Ada in the alien nexus and is transported with her to London in 1834, at a science exhibition. They are interrupted by the Master, who forces the Doctor to kneel. Ada manages to save the Doctor by shooting the Master, an action the Doctor disapproves of.

Ida Freund (1863-1914) was a British chemistry professor Elizabeth Brown (1830-99) was an early British astronomer. Anna Russell (1807-1876) was one of the most noted British biologists of the 19th century.

Ada was played by Sylvie Briggs. She is best known to British TV fans as Ellie Marsden in the sitcom "Cold Feet" (2019).
4. What was the name of the British scientist the Doctor met in 1834?

Answer: Charles Babbage

Charles Babbage (1791-1871) was a mathematician and inventor who created the difference engine, the forerunner for modern computers. Ada Gordon did become his protégé in 1833, and together they did some of the first work on computing devices.

Charles Darwin (1809-1852) introduced the theory of evolution, a landmark achievement in biology in 1858. Michael Faraday (1791-1867) made major contributions to physics and engineering in the fields of electricity and magnetism. George Boole (1815-1864) is a mathematician noted for work in algebraic theory.
5. The Doctor did lots of traveling in "Spyfall." Which of these places did she NOT visit during the episode?

Answer: 1947 India

1947 India was the setting for the series 11 episode "Demons of the Punjab" (2018).

The Doctor's first stop (after the Nexus) was 1834 London, where she met Ada and Babbage. Ada and the Doctor traveled to 1943 Paris, where they met Noor Inayat Khan. As the Doctor noted in the episode, Khan was the first female British secret agent in Paris during World War II. Unfortunately, Khan did not live to see fascism defeated. She was betrayed, arrested by the Nazis and died at Dachau in September 1944.

The Master managed to track the Doctor down in 1943, where he was dressed as a Nazi SS officer. (Finally, the Master as a Nazi. Admit it, we all wanted to see it.)

The Doctor managed to get back to 2020 London to save the day. She reveals she was also in 2019 San Francisco and traveled to the construction of Barton's plane.

Noor Khan was played by Aurora Marion. She is a native of Belgium and began acting in 2011. She was in the 2016 French comedy "A Wedding."
6. Who was the first person Barton had killed by the aliens?

Answer: His mother

Peter Barton (Lenny Henry) had some major, major Mommy issues. After getting her to admit she was proud of his business success, he had the Kasaavin kill her by rewriting her DNA.

Barton's mother was played by Blanche Williams. She is probably best known for the Ricky Gervais comedy series "Derek" (2013-14).
7. What was the mechanism the aliens used to try and take over humans?

Answer: a silver statue

Barton's plan turned out to be to convert the vast majority of the world's population into storage receptacles for the invading Kassavin spies. The Doctor was able to sort circuit the statue before Barton's plans were successful.

The Doctor revealed to the Kasaavin that the Master had planned to betray them. They did not take it well, and transported him to their nexus site. It will be interesting to see how he escapes. (It's the Master. He will escape).

The plot had echoes of "The End of Time" (2009/2010) where the Master used a machine to overwrite the DNA of everyone on Earth. In this case, Barton was using cell phones and other electronic devices. This was another episode where corporations were the bad guys (in his case Social Media companies); check your agreement before automatically clicking yes.
8. Where did the Doctor agree to meet the Master in Paris?

Answer: The Eiffel Tower

They met on the Eiffel Tower. The Master revealed to the Doctor that Gallifrey had been destroyed, and encouraged her to visit. The Doctor managed to turn the tables on the Master by having Noor Khan out him as a British double agent. The Nazis arrested him, and the Master wound up spending 77 years on Earth after the Doctor stole his TARDIS.

They could have meet at the Louvre (museum since 1793) or the Arc de Triomphe (completed 1836). The mighty Musee D'Orsay, site of the climax of "Vincent and the Doctor" was still a railway station in 1943. It did not become a museum until 1986.

At he top of the Eiffel Tower, the Doctor mentions the Jodrell Bank. This is a reference to "Logopolis" (1981), Tom Baker's last episode as the Doctor. The Master pushed the Fourth Doctor off a radio telescope, leading to his regeneration. Very nice throwback by Chibnall.
9. What planet did the Doctor visit near the end of "Spyfall Part 2"?

Answer: Gallifrey

MAJOR SPOILER. The Doctor managed to visit Gallifrey - supposedly impossible because it's time locked, but timey, wimey, right - to find the planet utterly destroyed. She found a message from the Master, who confessed to destroying his home world because its leaders were defending a lie. He did not expand on his reasons beyond a vague reference to "The Timeless Child." which was mentioned during "The Ghost Monument" (2018). Chris Chibnall has created a giant mystery.

Trenzalore is the location of the Doctor's grave, where the 11th Doctor spent hundreds of years defending a village from alien attacks. Skaro is the home world of the Daleks, the Doctor's greatest enemies. The Doctor has been to Mars several times; the 12th Doctor visited in "Empress of Mars" (2017).
10. Who directed the "Doctor Who" episode "Spyfall: Part 2"?

Answer: Lee Haven Jones

Lee Haven Jones directed "Spyfall Part 2" and "Orphan 55" for series 12. He began working as a director in British television in 2010. His work includes the crime dramas "The Bay" (2019) and "Shetland" (2018), the medical drama "Casualty" (2013-16) and the science fiction drama "Wizards vs Aliens" (2014). He has won two Welsh BAFTA awards.

Sacha Dhawan was the new Master, and was marvelous, absolutely chewing up the scenery for most of the episode. He may be best known to "Doctor Who" fans for playing Warris Hussein, the director at the start of the series in 1963, in the docudrama "An Adventure in Time and Space" (2013). Dhawan also includes "The History Boys" (2006) among his credits, working with Sam Anderson (Danny Pink), James Corden (Craig Owens) and Russell Tovey (Alonzo Frame). He was been working in British TV since 1998.

Struan Rodger was the voice of the Kasaavin. He was the Face of Boe in "New Earth" (2006) and "Gridlock" (2007). If you want to see what he actually looks like, check out "The Woman Who Lived" (2015) where was Clayton the servant.

Nikki Wilson was the Producer for "Spyfall." She started as one of the lead producers on "Doctor Who" during series 8 back in 2014.
