Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What African nation does "Spyfall" open in?

Answer: Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast)

"Spyfall" starts with a sniper in Cote d'Ivoire being abducted by a mysterious alien. A spy for MI is attacked on a flight to Tokyo over the Pacific, and an American agent is attacked at a safe house in Moscow.

Men in Black arrive to pick up the Doctor, Graham, Yaz and Ryan and take them to MI6. Their car goes beserk, kills their driver, and attempts to kill them. The Doctor is able to disable the wonky GPS system and rescue them.
2. What is the one letter name that the head of British Intelligence (Stephen Fry) goes by?

Answer: C

Veteran character actor Stephen Fry has a brief appearance as C, the head of MI-6, the United Kingdom's foreign intelligence branch. While the Doctor has worked a great deal with the British government over the years, especially UNIT and Torchwood, this seems to be the first time the Doctor has worked with MI-6.

C explains that agents have gone missing around the world, and intelligence agencies are seeking the Doctor's assistance in discovering who is behind the plots. He points them in the direction of a software billionaire.

Stephen Fry began acting in 1981. He achieve some early success as a comic actor in the "Black Adder" series before being a comedy team with Hugh Laurie. The two teamed up as Jeeves and Bertie Wooster in the TV series based on the P.G. Wodehouse characters. He has acted in numerous films and television series since, as is a well known voice over actor and narrator.
3. What is the name of the company that Daniel Barton runs?

Answer: VOR

VOR is supposed to be a global computer company, which started a search engine but involved into one of the world's largest tech companies. Barton is using the company to assist a group of aliens in taking over the world.

Harmony Shoal was the corporation behind the attempted alien takeover of the world in "The Return of Doctor Mysterio" (2016). Cybus Industries was the corporate front for the attempted Cyberman takeover of the world in "Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel" (2006). Cyberdyne is part of the "Terminator" universe, building robots bent on destroying humanity.
4. What desert do Graham and the Doctor travel to in order to meet O?

Answer: Great Victoria Desert, Australia

The Doctor finds O in the Australian Outback, in a home with extensive files on extra-terrestrials and an ultra high tech security system. O seems to be the MI-6 version of Fox Mulder, a slightly obsessive conspiracy nut who is ostracized by his more conventional colleagues.

O was played by Sacha Dhawan. He may be best known to "Doctor Who" fans for playing Warris Hussein, the director at the start of the series in 1963, in the docudrama "An Adventure in Time and Space" (2013). Dhawan also includes "The History Boys" (2006) among his credits, working with Sam Anderson (Danny Pink), James Corden (Craig Owens) and Russell Tovey (Alonzo Frame). He began working in British TV in 1998.
5. What American city do Yazmin and Ryan go to for their interview with Barton?

Answer: San Francisco

VOR headquarters are in San Francisco. They seem to be modeled on Apple and some of the other big cyber firms in northern California. Ryan and Yaz pose as British journalists Logan Jackson and Sofia Afzal. They use cool spy gear from MI6 to analyze Barton's DNA and make a copy of his security credentials. Barton cuts the interview short, but invites them to his birthday party the next day.

Yaz and Ryan manage to download the files off Barton's computer, and witness him communicating with the mysterious alien visitors.
6. What was the cover image that O used in his steganographic message to the Doctor?

Answer: fish

Steganography blends data to place one image behind another. You eliminate the first image to obtain the hidden message. In this case, the picture was a fish. While the idea of hidden messages dates back to ancient Greece, computer technology has made it considerably easier in recent decades. Steganography is Greek for "concealed writing."
7. What was the theme of Barton's birthday party at his vineyard?

Answer: casino

As befitting a spy story, the party has a casino theme. Graham and Ryan play roulette, successfully, the Doctor fails to grasp the essential rules of baccarat, and Yazmin proves less successful at Craps.

The Doctor confronts Barton, charging that he is colluding with the aliens attempting to take over the Earth. Barton suggests the Doctor is a mad conspiracy theorist. However, minutes later he leaves the party and goes to the airport. The Doctor and crew chase him on motorcycle and engage in a moving shootout. Fortunately, Barton is a lousy shot.

Barton was played by veteran British comedic actor Lenny Henry, who has been working regularly in British television since the mid 1980s. He worked with Chris Chibnall on the third season of "Broadchurch" in 2017.
8. At the end of "Spyfall," O is revealed to be what long-time nemesis of the Doctor?

Answer: The Master

In a wild reveal, O turns out to be another alias for the Master, who has been hiding out on Earth for years as an agent for MI-6. This is the first encounter for the 13th Doctor with the Master, who was last seen near the end of the 12th Doctor's tenure in "The Doctor Falls" (2017).

The Master is a long-term friend/nemesis of the Doctor. Roger Delgado originated the role during Jon Pertwee's tenure as the Doctor. Anthony Ainley took up the role in the 1980s, fighting the Fifth and Seventh Doctors. Eric Roberts played the Master in the 1996 television film. The Doctor returned in series three (Derek Jacobi and John Simm) and "The End of Time." The Master returned as Missy (Michelle Gomez) in "Death in Heaven" (2014). Gomez would return in 2015 and 2017.
9. As Part 1 of "Spyfall" concludes, the Doctor is aboard a crashing plane.

Answer: False

Graham, Ryan and Yazmin are aboard a crashing plane. The Doctor has been transported into the "nothingness" alien forest that Yazmin had visited earlier.

Very similar to the conclusion of "The Zygon Invasion," when the 12th Doctor was on board a jet liner targeted by a missile, or "Death in Heaven" in which the Doctor's plane was targeted by Cybermen led by Missy.
10. Who directed "Spyfall: Part 1", the kickoff episode of series 12 of "Doctor Who"?

Answer: Jamie Magnis Stone

Jamie Magnus Stone, a native of Edinburgh, is a graduate of the National Film and Television School. He began working in British television in 2008. Stone directed four series 12 episodes of "Doctor Who. His first work on the show was the 2013 mini-episode "Clara and the TARDIS."

Chris Chibnall became the showrunner in 2018, writing half of series eleven. There has been a fair amount of complaining about Chibnall's writing during his tenure as show runner. He had written five episodes of "Doctor Who" and multiple episodes of "Torchwood" before taking over the helm. Prior to "Doctor Who", Chibnall created the crime drama "Broadchurch" where he worked with 10th Doctor David Tennant and 13th Doctor Jodie Whittaker.

Veteran comic actor Stephen Fry played "C" in "Spyfall." He did do some voice-over work for some animated "Doctor Who" episodes that came out in 2001 and 2002. Fry began acting in the early 1980s, and is well known for his partnership with Hugh Laurie, especially their work as Jeeves and Wooster in the early 1990s. Fry's distinctive voice has made him a popular narrator for films.

Bradley Walsh plays companion Graham O'Brien. He started in series 11. Walsh has been acting since 2000, primarily in television, including the British soap opera "Coronation Street." Walsh is also a popular game show presenter, hosting almost 1000 episodes of "The Chase" between 2009 and 2019.
