The show is set in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma-there are many references to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, which traumatized Grace. Grace's unusual last name is taken from the city of Anadarko, Oklahoma. The show's producer Nancy Miller is from Oklahoma, and has named most of the show's characters after Oklahoma cities.

He's a real angel, and his name is Earl. He looks like a regular guy, except for a huge set of wings which he displays sometimes-they seem to appear out of nowhere. He's been sent to save Grace's soul, which won't be easy. Grace is not a religious person, and seems angry at God for several reasons which come to light later on. Earl is played by Leon Rippy.
