Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character got on a double decker bus and gave the Square the finger?

Answer: Mary

Punk rocker Mary and her child, Annie, left the Square in the style in which this heavily made up young woman lived in it. Mary was in the soap almost from the beginning, coping alone with her baby in a bedsit.
2. There have been a few fatal road accidents shown on the programme. Which of the following did NOT meet their demise under the wheels of a vehicle?

Answer: Gita

Gita and her husband were reconciled after her affair and subsequent pregnancy and left as a family. Male Nurse Andy was killed by a lorry, Tiffany by Frank's car and Debbie was reported to have been killed in a road accident while out shopping.
3. How did Hassan die?

Answer: cot death

This was in the soap's infancy and hit the headlines. It was a very powerful episode and the resulting storyline for this baby's parents was skilfully handled.
4. Some characters left more than once! Which of the following was a bit of a yo-yo where 'EastEnders' was concerned?

Answer: Frank Butcher

Another notable yo-yo was Nick Cotton, who was forever reappearing to make his mother's (Dot) life a misery with his varied schemes to milk her for all she was worth (including a murder attempt). Kathy Beale Mitchell was a character who reappeared once or twice, as was Dot Cotton Branning, Cindy Beale and Sharon Watts Mitchell.
5. Whose funeral was marked by the appearance of a train on the bridge?

Answer: Lou Beale

This was done specially for this episode; although there have been sound effects to indicate the trains, I think this was the only time one was actually seen on the bridge. (Corrections welcome if you know better!)
6. Which of the following characters emigrated to South Africa?

Answer: Kathy Beale Mitchell

Angie and Michelle both left for America, and Cindy (who left the Square three times) abducted two of her three children and ended up in Italy.
7. Who died in his chair?

Answer: Reg Cox

Reg is the first person seen on 'EastEnders' just before Den Watts and Pete Beale smash the door down to get to him. He had been beaten to death by Nick Cotton. This was in February 1985.
8. Irene and Terry had a relationship which went through the wringer on many occasions (including his legal wife turning up at the wedding!), but she finally had enough when they were on holiday with four other EastEnders and left him. Which country were they in at the time?

Answer: Spain

They were with Peggy and Frank Butcher, and Pat and Roy Evans. In a tempestuous week, Pat and Frank had an affair, and Irene left Terry. Terry was to leave the soap a long time afterwards, we understand, to find her.
9. The Mitchell brothers had four children between them but none are with a Mitchell blood sibling. Which of these children lives in Florida?

Answer: Mark Fowler

The Mitchells do not know that little Mark is of their flesh and blood; he lives with his Mum, Michelle, in Florida and his step-father (his half-sister Vicki lives in the Square with her father). Baby Louise is with her mother, Lisa while her father, Phil is on the run from the police after being framed, and Ben lives with his Mum (Kathy) and step-father; Courtney is with her father, Grant.
10. Although many characters have ended up in prison over the years, only one has died there. Who was this?

Answer: Cindy Beale

Cindy Beale died in childbirth while serving a sentence for the attempted murder of her husband, Ian. Arthur died just after leaving prison once his conviction was overturned, and Den was 'killed' by the mob while by the canal (in2003 he returned from the dead to live in the Square again). Wilmot-Brown (imprisoned for rape) served his sentence and was released.
11. Mark Fowler left the Square after learning that his twelve years of HIV status had come to an end and he had developed AIDS. How did he leave?

Answer: on a motorbike

Mark has left the Square on several occasions, always on his motorbike. This time he has left for good; the actor, Todd Carty, has gone on to a role in the popular series 'The Bill'.
12. Which EastEnder persuaded another to help her die?

Answer: Ethel Skinner

'EastEnders' occasionally has a 'two-hander' episode in which only two actors take part. The episode which showed Ethel Skinner dying through the overdose Dot Cotton gave her was highly acclaimed, and the subject of euthanasia was discussed throughout Britain at the time.
13. After searching for missing relatives from the Holocaust, this EastEnder found a long-lost sister and went to Israel to be with her.

Answer: Felix

Felix opened an old-fashioned Barbers in the Square and after a few misunderstandings, was accepted by the EastEnders. After finding out that his sister was still alive, he left the programme.
14. Which mother and son left the Square on a train to go to Manchester?

Answer: Bianca and baby Liam

Cindy and Steven left the Square with Steven's father, Wicksy. Michelle was pregnant with Mark when she left the Square for America with Vicki, and Kathy flew off to South Africa with Ben.
15. After living in different places in the Square for a long time, this EastEnder was eventually found dead of a drug overdose.

Answer: Donna

Donna was the baby Kathy Beale Mitchell gave birth to after being raped as a teenager. Because of the pain of the event, Kathy could not accept her daughter, and Donna went off the rails, remaining in the Square in the hope that Kathy could accept her.
