Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Pokémon League is said to be the ultimate goal of Trainers like you aiming for the top. How many places in the Pokémon world that have appeared in the main series games are actually named "Pokémon League" (up to "Black" and "White")?

Answer: Two

Only the Pokémon Leagues of Sinnoh and Unova are actually called "Pokémon League" in the game. Kanto and Johto share the same League, and it is named Indigo Plateau. The Pokémon League of Hoenn is named Evergrande City. However, all of these places share the same function of being the ultimate goal of Trainers.
2. As a Trainer you should know what item to use for a certain situation. In particular, knowledge of held items is expected of you. Which of the following held items powers up Electric-type moves?

Answer: Magnet

Magnet is a held item used to slightly power up Electric-type moves. Cell Battery raises the Attack of the holder if hit by an Electric-type move. Electirizer, when held by an Electabuzz, makes it evolve to Electivire when traded. Shock Drive is an item to be held by the event-only legendary Pokémon Genesect, and changes the type of its signature move Techno Buster to Electric-type.
3. Being a Trainer, you must know that battling is a key aspect of being a Trainer. Being familiar with type match-ups is important in winning a battle. Assuming they have the same stats and that no other altering conditions occur, which of the following would receive the largest damage from Sacred Sword?

Answer: Tyranitar

Sacred Sword is a Fighting-type move that is exclusive to the legendary Pokémon Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion and Keldeo. Tyranitar is a Rock/Dark Pokémon, and both Rock-type and Dark-type Pokémon are weak to Fighting-type moves, so Tyranitar would receive 4x damage. Zigzagoon is Normal-type, which is weak to Fighting-type moves, so it would receive 2x damage. Metang is a Steel/Psychic Pokémon; the Steel-type is weak to Fighting-type moves but the Psychic-type resists Fighting-moves so these two will cancel and Metang will receive only 1x damage.

The same reasoning would conclude that Crustle will receive only 1x damage (as Crustle is Rock/Bug, Rock is weak to Fighting-type moves, and Bug resists Fighting-type moves).
4. Abilities are also an integral part of Pokémon games, so you as a Trainer must be familiar with them. Which of the following legendary Pokémon whose ability is not exclusive to itself, meaning other Pokémon can legally have that ability?

Answer: Kyogre

Kyogre's ability, Drizzle, which summons rain in battle, was once exclusive to Kyogre until before Generation V. Since then, Politoed can have the ability Drizzle through the Dream World. Victini has the ability Victory Star, which increases the accuracy of the Pokémon and its team mates. Darkrai has the ability Bad Dreams, which gradually lowers the HP of a sleeping foe. Rayquaza has the ability Air Lock, which nullifies the effects of weather in battle.
5. To be able to live up the slogan "Gotta Catch 'Em All!", catching, evolving, and breeding Pokémon must be done by a Trainer like you. Which of the following pairs of Pokémon cannot breed with each other?

Answer: Remoraid and Tentacool

Two Pokémon can breed if they are of the same egg group. Remoraid and Tentacool cannot breed despite the former being based from a fish and the latter from a jellyfish, and both being Water-type Pokémon. It is because Remoraid belongs to the Water 1 and Water 2 egg groups, while Tentacool belongs to only the Water 3 egg group. Diglett and Wailord can breed due to both being in the Ground egg group, despite the immense size difference! Charmander and Haxorus are both in the Dragon egg group despite Charmander being a "cute" Pokémon and Haxorus being a "scary" Pokémon. Zangoose and Seviper can breed due to both being in the Ground egg group, despite being mortal enemies.
6. The stats of Pokémon are important in determining damage in battles. Natures affect the stats of the Pokémon, so it is essential for you to have knowledge of natures. Which of the following is not true of the Impish nature?

Answer: It increases the Pokémon's Special Defense

The Impish nature increases the Pokémon's Defense (not Special Defense) and decreases its Special Attack. It is the direct opposite of the Mild nature, which increases Special Attack and decreases Defense. A Pokémon with an Impish nature likes Sour berries/Pokéblocks/Poffins and dislikes Dry berries/Pokéblocks/Poffins. Examples of Sour berries are Oran Berry, Sitrus Berry, and Iapapa Berry. Pokéblocks increase Contest stats in Generation III, while Poffins increase Super Contest stats in Generation IV.
7. A Trainer like you must know the deeper aspects of Pokémon stats. The individual values (IVs) of a Pokémon are numbers randomly assigned for each stat of the Pokémon. If the characteristic of a Pokémon in its status screen is "Proud of its power", which is a possible value of its Attack IV?

Answer: 0

The IV of a Pokémon for each stat can be a number from 0 to 31 (2^5-1) due to it being stored in five bytes of the memory of the game cartridge. The higher the IV, the higher the stat of the Pokémon. Characteristics serve as a way to determine the possible IVs of a Pokémon.

A characteristic of "Proud of its power" means that the highest IV is the Attack IV, and its value may be 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30. Thus, it is possible that its Attack IV (and highest IV) is 0, and it would happen when all of its IVs are 0 (which is not desirable).
8. Another deeper aspect of Pokémon stats that a Trainer like you must know is the effort value (EV). The EV of the Special Defense stat can be increased by using which of the following vitamins?

Answer: Zinc

A vitamin increases a certain stat of a Pokémon by increasing the EV for that stat. Zinc increases the Special Defense EV, Calcium increases the Special Attack EV, Iron increases the Defense EV, and Carbos increases the Speed EV. Other vitamins include Protein, which increases the Attack EV, and HP Up, which increases the HP EV.

The highest possible EV for any stat is 255, and the total EVs for all stats must not exceed 510.
9. To make a Pokémon more powerful, Trainers like you must be able to evolve their Pokémon. Which of the following fully-evolved Pokémon can be legitimately obtained at level 1?

Answer: Porygon-Z

Porygon-Z evolves from Porygon2 by trading it while holding a Dubious Disc, while Porygon2 evolves from Porygon by trading it while holding an Up-Grade. Since both evolutionary steps are by trading, no leveling up is necessary, so a level 1 Porygon would lead to a level 1 Porygon-Z. Togekiss evolves by using a Shiny Stone on Togetic, which evolves from Togepi by maxing out happiness and leveling up. Buneary evolves to Lopunny by happiness and leveling up. Ambipom evolves from Aipom by knowing the move Double Hit and leveling up. Thus, Togekiss, Lopunny, and Ambipom can be obtained at level 2 at the least.
10. A Trainer like you must be familiar of Pokémon themselves. What Pokémon has the following Pokédex entry (from "Pokémon Black/White"): "Its kicking mastery lets it loose 10 kicks per second. It emits sharp cries to intimidate foes."?

Answer: Combusken

The Pokédex entry of Blaziken is: "Flames spout from its wrists, enveloping its knuckles. Its punches scorch its foes." The Pokédex entry of Hitmonlee is: "Its legs can stretch double. First-time foes are startled by its extendible reach." The Pokédex entry of Tyrogue is: "It is famous for its eagerness to fight and always nurses injuries from challenging larger foes." (All Pokédex entries are from "Pokémon Black and White".)
