Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mario's signature B-standard move is the Fireball. This came from the original "Super Mario Bros" whenever Mario collected a Fire Flower. This also consequently changed his clothes a different color. What color are Fire Mario's overalls in "Super Mario Bros."?

Answer: White

Unlike the games following "Super Mario Bros.", Fire Mario originally wore white overalls, a red shirt, and a white cap. Come "Super Mario World" for the SNES, the costume was changed to red overalls and a white shirt and cap. This then became the standard color for Fire Mario for much more recent games, including "Super Mario Galaxy".
Additionally, this costume is also a selection as one of the costume changes for Mario in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl".
2. Donkey Kong's Final Smash, Konga Beat, is originally derived from the game "Donkey Konga". This was a rhythm game, released in 2004, where players would hit bongo drums to the beat of the music being played while following the notes that scrolled from left to right. How many different types of notes were in the game?

Answer: Four

The four different notes represented hitting the left drum, hitting the right drum, hitting both drums simultaneously, and clapping. The Bongo drums could also be used in "Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat", released shortly after, which was more of a platformer than a music game.
In "Super Smash Bros. Brawl," in order to amplify the sound waves of the Final Smash, you can press the attack button to the beat of the music.
3. Nearly all of Link's special moves are weapons that he used in his previous games. However, in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl", they are specifically modeled after the designs in "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess". In "Twilight Princess", which of the weapons does Link receive from Barnes?

Answer: Bomb (B-down)

The Hero's Bow, Gale Boomerang, and Clawshot were obtained in the Goron Mines, Forest Temple, and Lakebed Temple respectively.
The Bridge of Eldin, which first appeared in "Twilight Princess", also appears in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" as one of the stages to battle on.
4. Samus's Grab is the Grapple Beam. This gives the player a long distance grab in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl". From what "Metroid" game does this first appear?

Answer: Super Metroid

"Metroid" and "Metroid II" did not have the Grapple Beam in their games, and "Metroid Fusion" was released after "Super Metroid".
In "Super Smash Bros. Brawl," players can also use the Grapple Beam to cling onto ledges as another recovery move.
5. Although Yoshi originally premiered in "Super Mario World" for the Super Nintendo, his special moves were derived from its own set of games like "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island" and "Yoshi's Story". Which of these moves in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" slightly differed in function between "Yoshi's Island" and "Yoshi's Story"?

Answer: Egg Throw (B-up)

In "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island", players could aim eggs at enemies using a target that automatically scrolled up and down. In "Yoshi's Story", players could manually control the direction and distance of the target using the control stick.
In "Super Smash Bros. Brawl", you can actually use the Egg Throw as a third jump to get back on the stage, which did not appear in the two previous "Super Smash Bros." games.
6. Kirby's most distinctive move is his B-standard move, Inhale, where he can copy the B-standard moves of his enemies. This move is derived from "Kirby's Adventure"; however, not all of the enemies in this game gave him an ability. Which of the following enemies is one that Kirby could copy in "Kirby's Adventure"?

Answer: Waddle Doo

If Kirby swallowed a Waddle Doo, he would acquire the Beam ability. Waddle Dees and Bronto Burts could be swallowed but did not have a move to copy. Gordos could not be swallowed and would damage Kirby.
Waddle Doos also use their Beam attack in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" after being thrown by King Dedede.
7. Since Fox never really appeared outside his Arwing until "Star Fox Adventures" on the Gamecube, not many moves were derived from his games. One exception is the Landmaster, Fox's Final Smash, which first appeared in "Star Fox 64". In the game, what was one of the planets that Fox used the Landmaster?

Answer: Titania

In Titania, Fox used the Landmaster to save Slippy. The only other planet that used the Landmaster was Macbeth. He used an Arwing in both Corneria and Katina, and he used the Blue Marine in Aquas.
In "Super Smash Bros. Brawl", the Landmaster has many similar functions that were present in "Star Fox 64" including shooting the laser, rolling, and hovering.
8. Pikachu's special moves all derive from the "Pokemon" series; however, which of these moves in "Super Smash Bros Brawl" does NOT come from the "Pokemon" video games?

Answer: Thunder Jolt (B-standard)

Pikachu can learn Skull Bash, Quick Attack, and Thunder in "Pokemon Red/Blue". Thunder Jolt was not featured in any of the "Pokemon" video games or in the anime and only appeared on the Pikachu trading card.
9. Luigi has many of the same moves as his older brother, but many of them differ slightly. In fact, when turning around while running, Luigi slides along the ground further than Mario. Luigi also jumps higher than Mario. Which "Super Mario" game did these differences between the brothers (jumping and sliding) first appear?

Answer: Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels

Luigi appeared in all of these games, but the difference didn't appear until "The Lost Levels" which was a game bundled with many others in "Super Mario All-Stars".
"The Lost Levels" was a 16-bit remake of the Japanese version of "Super Mario Bros. 2". However, the Japanese version was the true sequel to "Super Mario Bros." where there was very similar gameplay and graphics. The vegetable-throwing American version of "Super Mario Bros. 2" was actually based off of a Japanese game called "Doki Doki Panic".
10. Like Fox, Captain Falcon did not appear outside of a machine since his premiere on "Super Smash Bros.", so his regular moveset is completely made-up. However, his vehicle, the Blue Falcon, does appear as his Final Smash in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl". The design of the car mainly comes from "F-Zero X" for the Nintendo 64. In the game, besides being a driver, Captain Falcon was also a bounty hunter. However, which F-Zero driver was Cpt. Falcon's rival bounty hunter?

Answer: Samurai Goroh

In the back of the instruction booklet for "F-Zero X", both Captain Falcon and Samurai Goroh are shown fighting over a bounty on Scale Head.
In "Super Smash Bros. Brawl", this secret job of Captain Falcon's is also shown in Event Match #38, "High-Tech Special Force", where Snake is attacked by three bounty hunters, one of which is Captain Falcon.
Samurai Goroh also appears as an Assist Trophy, where he uses his sword (first shown in the "F-Zero X" instruction booklet) to slash at his foes.
11. Ness uses a plethora of PK attacks and other weapons in his moveset for "Super Smash Bros. Brawl", all of which come from his game, "Earthbound". However, many of the PK attacks he uses in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" were not used by him in "Earthbound". Which of these PK moves was the only one he could learn?

Answer: PK Flash (B-standard)

Out of the six PK attacks in "Earthbound", Ness could only use three of them: PK Flash, PK Magnet (his B-down move), and PK Rockin. His friend Paula could use PK Thunder and PK Fire while his friend Poo could use PK Starstorm.
It is rumored that Poo taught Ness how to use the move as a Final Smash for the game. At least that's what it says in the PK Starstorm trophy in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl".
12. Like Pikachu, all of Jigglypuff's special moves derive from moves in the "Pokemon" games. Which of these moves used in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" did NOT appear in "Pokemon Red/Blue"?

Answer: Rollout (B-standard)

Rollout first appeared in "Pokemon Gold/Silver" and was interestingly considered to be a Rock-type move even though Jigglypuff's type is Normal. The other moves appeared in "Red/Blue", and although Jigglypuff couldn't learn Rest directly, it could be taught through a TM.
13. Aside from being kidnapped, Peach did star in a few games of her own before "Super Smash Bros. Brawl", which is where some of her moves come from. Her B-down move, Vegetable, came from "Super Mario Bros. 2", where they could be used as a weapon after plucking from the ground. Many other things could be plucked out, but which of these items could not?

Answer: Egg

Eggs only appeared when shot out of Ostro's (Birdo's) mouth during the boss battle at the end of most levels. A potion could be plucked and placed to create a secret door, which led to extra hearts and warp tunnels, to name a few. A rocket ship also was plucked out of the ground to be transported to other parts of the level.
Peach can also pluck out Bob-ombs in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl", but it's very rare. She can also pull out Mr. Saturns and Beam Swords sometimes.
14. Bowser's B-standard move is Fire Breath which first appeared in "Super Mario 64" (he only shot spurts of fire in the previous games). He appeared as a boss three times throughout the game and used his Fire Breath against Mario. Using only that move, what was the minimum number of times it needed to be executed in order to kill Mario?

Answer: Three

In "Super Mario 64", Mario had eight bars of life at the beginning of each level. Bowser's Fire Breath took away three bars each time; therefore, doing the math, it would only take three times to kill Mario. Thankfully, it was one of the few moves Mario could easily dodge.
In "Super Smash Bros. Brawl", you actually can control the angle of Bowser's Fire Breath by moving up and down on the control stick (or pad) while executing the move.
15. Zelda also appears in her "Twilight Princess" form, but most of her special moves are magical attacks that appeared in "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time". Which of these moves differed in appearance and function the most when translated from "Ocarina of Time" to "Super Smash Bros. Brawl"?

Answer: Din's Fire (B-side)

Din's Fire in "Ocarina of Time" created an explosion around the player damaging enemies in the way. In "Super Smash Bros. Brawl", Din's Fire is executed by guiding a ball of fire and exploding it at the right time to damage enemies. Nayru's Love still protects the player from harm (by reflecting projectiles) and Farore's Wind still transports players a good distance (as a recovery move).
It should also be noted that even though Zelda does not use these moves in "Ocarina of Time" (Link is the only one who does), she is considered to be one of the Seven Sages according to the game and, thus, can use magical moves like these.
