Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which bandicoot first starred in a PlayStation game bearing his name in 1996?

Answer: Crash

"Crash Bandicoot" is one of the most successful video game franchises. It may have originally been launched for the PlayStation, but since the original release in 1996, Crash games have been released for many platforms including Android, Zeebo, GameCube, Wii and Xbox.
2. He's blue, he curls into a ball to attack enemies and was voiced by Ben Schwartz in a 2020 movie. What kind of animal is this Sega hero that first appeared in 1991?

Answer: Hedgehog

It is of course Sonic the hedgehog who first appeared on the Sega MegaDrive (Genesis in North America). Since his debut in 1991, Sonic and his fox sidekick, Miles "Tails" Prower, so called because he has two tails, have appeared on many platforms. These include Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 3DS, Sega Saturn and Wii U.

Aside from the platform games, there have been several spin offs, including educational games such as "Sonic's Schoolhouse" (1996) and sports games like "Sonic At The Olympic Games" (2008).
3. In "Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy" (2001) for PlayStation 2, human child Daxter fell into a vat of Dark Eco. He was transformed into an ottsel, half otter, half which other creature?

Answer: Weasel

I would be scared to add up the hours I spent playing the Jak and Daxter series of games. The franchise started with "Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy" on PlayStation 2 in 2001 and took the guys on a quest to find to find dark eco sage Gol Acheron.

The aim was to use his knowledge to transform Daxter back into human form but, had that happened, I guess there would be just a single game and no franchise. Also nowhere near as many hours (days) of enjoyment for me.
4. What is the name of the large rottweiler dog that lives with Franklin Clinton in "Grand Theft Auto V" (2013) on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360?

Answer: Chop

Chop actually appears as the dog of Lamar Davis, but Davis asks Franklin to take care of him. Luckily this is not the gangster understanding of "take care of him" and he becomes Franklins loyal pet.
Chop gets shot several times in the video game, but usually reappears back at Franklin's house following his ordeal.
5. In the Nintendo 64 game, "Animal Crossing" (2001). what is the name of the beaver that hosts the fishing tournament?

Answer: Chip

Chip can be found stood outside the town hall waiting for players to bring him the fish that they have caught.
He eats every fish that is brought to him, and quite often eats them inch by inch, in order to measure the fish and then declare the winner.
Chip is happiest when eating fish, as shown by his trademark "Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk" vocalisation whenever he is given a fish.
6. Jim wears a "super suit" which allows him to function much like a human as he rescues Princess What's-Her-Name. What kind of animal is Jim though, in this 1994 Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) game?

Answer: Earthworm

Not only does Earthworm Jim move like a human while wearing his "super suit", he has the ability to fire a gun as well. This is a skill which comes in particularly handy as villains want to take his suit from him and Princess What's-Her-Name seems to have many enemies.
This was the game that gave us boss levels against such unforgettable characters as Bob The Killer Goldfish, Queen Slug For A Butt and Professor Monkey For A Head.
7. In a 1998 Nintendo 64 game, the best friend of red crested breegull, Kazooie, is a honey bear. What is this bear called?

Answer: Banjo

Banjo-Kazooie first appeared in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, and has since been made available for Game Boy Advance, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
Banjo, who does indeed play the banjo, lives with Kazooie at the foot of spiral mountain and together they thwart the plans of the witch Gruntilda as she continues to try and steal the beauty of Tooty, Banjo's younger sister.
8. In "Rat Attack!" (PlayStation 1999), which member of the Scratch Cats is a native of the Bronx?

Answer: Manx

The Scratch Cats are determined to cleanse the world of the mutant rats found in this PlayStation and Nintendo 64 game. They are led by Professor Rex Julius and Manx is the only American cat.
Other members of the group are Siamese cat, Hi-Jinx, English cats Sparky and Bob, French cat Muffy DuPont and Smokey, a Swiss cat.
9. Mr Kong, the protagonist in a Nintendo arcade game that first appeared in 1981 has an unusual first name for a primate. What is his name?

Answer: Donkey

Donkey Kong is the ape that keeps on giving. There have been so many games released for so many different platforms, it's hard to imagine there could be anyone who has not played one of the games. From its debut in 1981, to the release of "Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze" for the Nintendo Switch in 2018, the 35 plus years in between have also given us several other memorable characters. These include Diddy Kong who would have his own series of games as well as Jumpman, whose name was changed to Mario prior to being given his own rather successful series of games.

Other characters include Banjo from "Banjo-Kazooie" (1998 Nintendo 64) and Conker the Squirrel from "Conker's Pocket Tales" (1999 Game Boy Color) who first appeared in "Diddy Kong Racing" (1987 Nintendo 64).
10. Who is the flying squirrel in the "Sonic" franchise that was rescued from the clutches of Dr Robotnik by Sonic and Mighty the Armadillo?

Answer: Ray

Ray the flying squirrel first appeared in the arcade game, "SegaSonic the Hedgehog" (1993). After escaping from Robotik and being blown to the other side of Eggman island by a powerful geyser, Ray, Mighty and Sonic team up.
They confront Robotnik and only just manage to escape from the island before Robotnik destroys Eggman's Tower.
Nothing more is seen of Ray, until 2011, when in "Sonic Generation" (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, and Microsoft Windows), he appears on a missing persons poster along with Mighty the Armadillo.
