Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

'Animal Crossing' proved very successful when it was developed back in 2001 by Nintendo. Its first appeared for the Nintendo 64 and has been revised to play on various Nintendo systems since then. The game involves the player interacting with various animals in their village and undertaking tasks such as gardening, collecting various items and interacting with the animal residents. These include a range of animals from a racoon to various dogs. The two chosen to represent the game are the owl named Blathers, whose sister Celeste also appears, and one of the dogs, Booker the policeman.

Conker is a red squirrel who first appeared in 'Diddy Kong Racing' in 1997 before being given his own series in 1999. The first game, called 'Conker's Pocket Tales', was available on the Game Boy Color with subsequent games appearing on the Nintendo 64 and Xbox. The games fit into the platform game category. The bear named Banjo and the rather brightly coloured bird called Kazooie appear in another platform game, which first appeared in 1998 on the Nintendo 64. The game involves collecting items to defeat the antagonist, a witch named Gruntilda.

'Sonic the Hedgehog' first appeared in 1991 and the franchise is still going strong into the twenty-first century. Sonic himself is almost too well known to be included, but also too hard to leave out so something of a freebie, even for non game players. The game was developed by Sega, initially for their Sega Genesis console. As was common at the time, the first game followed the platform format as Sonic collected rings and aimed to defeat the enemy, Dr Robotnik. Other characters include Miles Prower, better known as Tails since he has two of them, an echidna named Knuckles, various other hedgehogs and Espio the chameleon.

'The Legend of Zelda' series began in 1986 and is another which has had frequent new games in the franchise. Link is the main character, although players can usually rename him as the game begins. The horse named Epona doesn't appear until the fifth game in the series, 'Ocarina of Time', from 1998, while Scratcher is even later as 'The Minish Cap' didn't appear until 2004. Scratcher is the cat who Link has to avoid in the library during the game.

'Dark Souls' is a role playing game which first appeared in 2011 with subsequent releases in 2012 and 2016. The games are available on various consoles. The wolf called Sif is from the first game in the series and is described as the 'Great Grey Wolf'. 'Star Fox' has several animal characters and first appeared in 1993. Various associated games have been issued over the years and into the twenty-first century. Slippy Toad is described as an old school friend of the main character while Peppy Hare is described as a rabbit, despite the name. He is the wise old head who gives advice to the younger members of the team. One of the villains of the game, Andrew Oikonny is a metallic looking monkey.

'Q*bert' dates from 1982 and began life as an arcade game with the main character having to navigate a series of cubes, jumping on each to make them change colour. Turning all the cubes to the required colour allows the player to progress. Among the enemies is a purple snake called Coily who hatches from an egg. He chases after Q*bert who will die if the snake catches him. The game also appeared on various consoles so it could be played at home.
