Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are several "families" that conduct business all across the region of central Europe. Which of these is NOT one of those families?

Answer: The Vogt

Families hold offices in every city. The Fuggers and Medici have banking establishments where you can convert cash into bank notes. Visit their offices for a chance to get a quest. The Hanse will sometimes grant you a knight from their family as assistance for some time.
2. Which of these skills does NOT exist in the game?

Answer: Foraging

There are roughly twenty skills in "Darklands", and each and every one of them is important. You're limited to four characters, so make sure that between them, they cover all possible skills. You can train skills during the game, but this may be either very time-consuming and/or very hard to accomplish.
3. Which of the following saints requires the use of a Flute when trying to win his/her assistance?

Answer: St. Cecilia

Praying to St. Cecilia can be extremely useful, as it boosts your popularity wherever you are, helping you secure well-paying quests or escape persecution. She also averts suffocation. You will need either a flute or a harp to pray to her.

Did you know that "Darklands" has over 130 different saints?
4. What is the full name of the city often referred to as "Frankfurt O"?

Answer: Frankfurt an der Oder

The "O" is to distinguish it from Frankfurt am Main, which is a much more important city in the game. Oder is the river that connects Prague with the Baltic Sea.
5. How many Pfennigs are there in a Florin?

Answer: 240

There are 12 Pfennigs in a Groschen and 20 Groschen in a Florin, so 240 Pfennigs go in a Florin. These can be very difficult to keep track of. What were they thinking in the 15th century?!
6. Which of the following cities houses a University?

Answer: Heidelberg

A University is truly a great place of learning - you can pick up new alchemical formulas and knowledge of saints, improve your Philosopher's Stone, and even hire tutors to teach you some of the "scholarly" skills (albeit, at a great price). There are eight universities strewn all around Germany.

There's no university at Wittenberg yet - it was established a full 100 years after the start of this game...
7. Which is the most common alchemical ingredient of the four options presented below?

Answer: Phlegmatic Base

There are twenty-three alchemical ingredients available in the game, although some are so rare you'll only be able to get them in specific places. The four "Bases", namely Phlegmatic, Sanguine, Choleric, and Melancholic, are the most common ingredients and can be found almost anywhere.
8. What is the most valuable (and hardest-to-make) potion in the game?

Answer: Nicolaus of A's Transformation

Transformation potions are useful for quests- they can get you out of serious jams, especially when demonic forces are threatening. Nicolaus of A's Transformation has an alchemical number of 210, which means it can be exceptionally difficult to concoct.

It requires 1 Zincblende, 1 Orpiment, 1 Aqua Regia, 1 Brimstone, and 1 Pure Gold to make. It is extremely profitable when sold, earning around ten times more than the cost of these ingredients.
9. Which city sells the highest quality weapons in the game?

Answer: Paderborn

Equipment can theoretically go all the way up to 99q (q=quality), but I don't think there are any weapons available which are that good without the use of alchemical elixirs. Paderborn sells weapons of 38q, and that's the best money can buy. You can get better quality weapons from special encounters though.

Also, Nurnberg sells both 37q weapons and 37q armor (making it the best armor seller in the game), but it doesn't have a full stock of all possible items available...
10. What is a "Schrat"?

Answer: A tall and gangling forest-creature

Schrats will sometimes try to abduct one of your teammates. If you're exceptionally lucky, you can get a Schrat to give you some... supernatural assistance.
11. Some cities are landlocked, meaning that travel by boat to or from the city is impossible. Which of these cities is landlocked?

Answer: Prenzlau

You can get almost anywhere by boat, in fact only around five of the hundred cities in the game are landlocked. Boat travel is MUCH safer and usually MUCH faster than overland travel, assuming there's a boat going in the right direction. If you catch a good break, you can ride clear across the northern coast on one "ticket".
12. What is the correct order of armor strength, of these four armor types, from LEAST PROTECTIVE to MOST PROTECTIVE?

Answer: Scale, Cuirbouilli, Chainmail, Plate

Better armor is usually much heavier, and there's a rather low limit on encumbrance. So unless your characters are all Arnold Schwarzenegger, some characters may have to wear lighter armor (even Leather) to avoid getting overloaded.
13. What kind of weapon is best used when fighting a well-armored enemy?

Answer: Impact Weapons

Impact weapons, like Hammers or Cudgels, will cause great damage to armored enemies, as all other weapons will be much less effective than they usually are. That's one good reason not to equip everybody with swords. Handguns can also defeat armor very well, but they take ages to reload.
14. Which of these melee-combat orders does not exist in the game?

Answer: Aggressive

In Parry mode, a character reduces the chance of enemies hitting him, but reduces his own chance to hit the enemy as well. This is great for "Stalling" an enemy until help arrives.

Berserk mode increases the chance to hit the enemy, but also increases the enemy's chance to hit you. Good for finishing off a weak enemy, or when flanking an enemy from several sides.
15. On the overland map, what does the F7 key do?

Answer: Set up ambush

This escapes a lot of players who haven't read the manual thoroughly, and is a great feature. If you're looking for action, walk up to a road and hit the F7 key. Time will begin to move slowly while your group waits for special events.
