There are seven total gang hideouts in the game: Pike's Basin, Twin Rocks, Tumbleweed, Gaptooth Breach, Fort Mercer, Tesoro Azul, and Nosalinda. In order to acquire the U.S. Marshal Outfit, players will need to complete all of the hideouts in New Austin.

John is given the option of killing Javier or bringing him to the officials, but he must track down and kill both Dutch and Bill in the game. In his efforts to bring them to justice, he must first fight against Reyes' rebels and then joins forces with Reyes to fight against Bill and Javier.

John was able to return the MacFarlanes' generosity by saving their horses from a burning barn and then saving Bonnie from Bill Williamson's gang when they were hanging her in Tumbleweed. Bonnie and John remained friends until the end of his short life.

Generally you can earn double the bounty price if you bring the outlaw in alive. The best strategy is to take out all of the gang's members and then hogtie or maim and hogtie the bounty, throw them on the back of your horse and head to the jail for payment.

The game begins with John Marston being taken by government officials from Blackwater in West Elizabeth to New Austin to begin his quest. Once you conquer Fort Mercer in New Austin, John is able to move onto Nuevo Paraiso for a new set of challenges. Once he has completed those he is able to head back to West Elizabeth.

"The Beauty and the Lady" is a frequent ambush scenario as you ride through the terrain in the game. After the pretty lady asks you for help a group of four to five bandits will appear and try to rob/kill you of your money and your horse. On occasion a woman on the side of the road will truly be in need of assistance, in which case you should offer to help her and take her safely to the nearest town.

However, she will be with a broken wagon or carriage, not a stagecoach; the lady by the stagecoach is always an ambush.

Hunting is a great way to improve your shooting skills while gaining meat, antlers, hearts, pelts, and even teeth to sell at the nearby shops. You will earn more money from shopkeepers when you sell your items in areas where they are not naturally found; for example, selling buffalo and bear hides in Nuevo Paraiso will earn you far more money than selling them in West Elizabeth where you shot them.
