7. This puzzle game, developed by a team of around only ten people, was widely recognized as one of the most original games of 2007. The game gave the player the use of a neat hand-held device and offered some of the most unique and enjoyable puzzles in gaming. Aside from excellent gameplay, it also featured a darkly humorous story and a maniacal but wickedly funny non-human villain who was the acclaim of many commentators.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There is one scene ,from an online video series, where characters from two opposing teams are battling it out. You see one soldier running across the screen only to see them get shot down at close range by an enemy who was hiding in the shadows. As he dies, the first soldier complains bitterly about his enemy's tactics. In response, the enemy jumps up and yells, "It's a legitimate strategyyyyy!!!" and then runs away. What is the term for what the enemy was doing when he shot the first soldier?

Answer: Camping

Camping is when a player hides and stays hidden in a spot, not moving and only attacking those who happen to pass by. Sniping sounds similar but, unlike camping, that actually requires skill.

Campers can be incredibly frustrating. Some defend its credibility as a strategy but most just think it's lame. For shame campers, for shame.

The scene I mentioned is from the same series that is the answer to question number five and is also one of my favorites. Of course, the scene is much more hilarious when you actually see it.
2. Known for his fast talking, acerbic wit and penchant for ripping apart games while providing some of the most humorous online video commentaries available, this Australian based reviewer seems as if he dislikes almost every game out there. What is the name of this series created by Yahtzee Croshaw? (Hint: The name reflects the rapid pace Crowshaw's speech in his reviews.)

Answer: Zero Punctuation

"Zero Punctuation" started off on the gaming website called The Escapist. Yahtzee Croshaw's collection of hilarious and biting reviews is some of the most entertaining content on the net. Accompanied by equally hilarious animations, his reviews often point out the silliness of the games we play. Though critical, his reviews are almost always justifiable in pointing out certain flaws.

If you don't like video games you might enjoy it even more for exactly the same reasons. This is highly suggested viewing.

The videos can be found at www.escapistmagazine.com in the videos section.
3. You're playing a Role Playing Game and you've been running around the same map for hours fighting the same enemies over and over again. Maybe you're looking for money, maybe you want items and weapons or it could be that you want to get stronger so that next boss won't obliterate you like it did yesterday, causing you to cry yourself to sleep. What term is commonly used to describe what you're doing?

Answer: Farming

Oh isn't it wonderful to be able to waste hours upon hours of your life with repetitive tasks that have absolutely no bearing on real life? This is a strategy most commonly employed in games , such as RPGs, where you have to earn money, experience points or something similar. This mostly involves repeating a mundane or simple task over and over to advance rather than facing more difficult challenges right away.

Farming those nasty critters to get to that next level might seem ridiculous but when you're finally strong enough to annihilate all those before you who's gonna make fun of you then? Certainly not your friends because imaginary friends can't hurt you.
4. Video games often inspire numerous types of player created media, such as web-comics and music videos. Which medium involves the use of a game's native graphics engine to create videos and stories that may or may not be related to the game itself? (Hint: Think of the name for Japanese animation.)

Answer: Machinima

Machinima displays some surprisingly clever use of a video games graphics to tell stories. Creators work within the limits of the game, manipulating the characters and environment to produce their own content. These are often accompanied by voice overs provided by the creators themselves. Machinima mostly involves comedy but genres also range from action to drama. Who knew it would be so much fun watching other people play games?
5. While on the subject of player created media, one of the most popular series created employed the game "Halo" as its foundation. The series chronicles a group of soldiers based in Blood Gulch and their bumbling attempts to carry out orders and fight a seemingly pointless war with an enemy that is equally as incompetent and clueless. What is the name of this series?

Answer: Red vs. Blue

"Red vs. Blue", created by Rooster Teeth Productions, is amongst the funniest and highest quality series available. Lampooning some of the more absurd aspects of military bureaucracy the series has also found a strong audience among military personnel. So successful was the series that they have received several awards and has been commercially released in DVD format.
6. You and your friend are about to play a game on the SNES but when you turn it on all you see are jaggy lines running across the screen, something is wrong. It's not a serious issue for you though. You're a pro and you can remain calm in these perilous situations. You know exactly what you can do to fix it. Which of the following is NOT a method for fixing the problem? (Hint: Think about the one LEAST likely to have any effect.)

Answer: Unplug the controllers and then reinsert them in reverse order, then do the same with your grandpa's IV drip

No, re-plugging the controllers in reverse order will not fix the issue. It has nothing to do with the cartridge or console receiver. However, it will work for your grandpa if your goal is to see what a funeral would be like.

The other three options are common, if not ad-hoc, solutions that often work when there is not a serious hardware issue.
This game also ended with a surprisingly good song called "Still Alive" with lyrics that included, "You just keep on trying till you run out of cake." What is the name of that game?

Answer: Portal

"Portal" was developed by a tiny team, most of whom were students at The DigiPen Institute of Technology. The teleportation gun and unique physics created highly original gameplay. Much of the game's appeal also comes from it's story which introduces us to GLaDOS, a homicidal and thoroughly clinical artificial intelligence. The voice of GLaDOS, Ellen McLain, received much praise for her portrayal.

To top off an excellent game the producers of "Portal" added a song at the end that you just can't get out of your head. "Still Alive", written by John Coulton and sung in the voice of GLaDOS, laments her destruction at your hands but offers ominous indications that she'll be back.
8. The TV show "X-Play" offers regular reviews and commentaries on video games new and old. When the game "Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis" was released, it inspired the people on the show to award it a "Golden Mullet". Since then, this award has been given to the game with the top distinguishment in a particular category every year. For what achievement is the "Golden Mullet" awarded? (Hint: other recipients include "Bikini Zombie Slayers" and "Tony Hawk: Ride".)

Answer: The worst game of the year

The Golden Mullet is awarded to games of truely superlative suckitude. They represent the worst aspects of a game such as awful controls, boring game play and overuse of provocative content. These games are often the result of companies looking to cash in on base appeal or other more successful content like popular movies.

Take a look at the three games mentioned and you'll quickly learn to appreciate those games that actually are of good quality. Also, I know one of the answers seems to be missing a word. Maybe it is, we might never know.
9. You are playing a first-person shooter and you have an enemy dead in your sights. Victory is all but assured but ,amazingly, you somehow manage to miss your shot. Your now alerted target ends up killing you with just a knife. Shameful! Adding to your humiliation, your killer sends you a message that reads, "You just got (______)" Which commonly used gaming term for overwhelming and often shameful defeat does your opponent use in his message?

Answer: PWNED!

PWNED - to be completely annihilated or dominated, often in a humiliating manner.

Examples of PWNage might be, getting sniped by a player at close range who didn't even stop running as they scoped and shot, having your entire team swiftly and completely dominated by the opposition or what taxes do to your paycheck.

Never been PWNED? Well congratulations because you're probably the jerk that keeps killing me no matter how many grenades I throw or how many goats I sacrifice to the gods. I hate you.
10. Movies and video games have had an unfortunately strained relationship. No matter how hard people try, they just can't seem to make many good games based on a movie or vice versa. This is not a recent phenomenon. The disfigured mentally crippled hell-spawns of movies and video games made their first appearance way back in the early years of the gaming industry. One of these games, produced in the 1980s, sold so poorly that the makers had to rid themselves of the millions of unsold cartridges by dumping them in a New Mexico landfill. What is the name of that game?

Answer: E.T.

"E.T." the video game from Atari was so bad that many cite it as a major factor in the crash of the video game industry in the '80s. Millions of cartridges went unsold and the company suffered significant losses. To deal with the overstock Atari reportedly dumped them all into a giant landfill in New Mexico.

It is commonly listed as one of the absolute worst games of all time. But the movie was pretty good right?
