Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mother Brain- A boss that strikes fear in the hearts of the most seasoned gamers. Still, with the Star Mists to keep you alive, you have a fighting chance. What's the game?

Answer: Phantasy Star II

Mother Brain is a giant super computer that controls the Algo Star System. The inhabitants grow dependent upon Mother Brain, and when the computer starts malfunctioning, the main protagonist, Rolf, investigates what is going on. You must fight a boss known as Dark Force right before you battle Mother Brain. One of the characters in your party, Amy, is a healer, and uses the Star Mists power to regenerate health in your party.

I'm surprised there isn't copyright infringement, as Mother Brain is so heavily identified with the "Metroid" series.
2. You are in a forest with houses built in the tree's branches. You have heard that is a mysterious witch doctor who is the master of these woods you find yourself presently in. You collect several red jewels. After collecting a certain number of these jewels, you are now ready to face the witch doctor. You approach his lair, cautiously. He has a strange wood face. You then realise the witch doctor is simply three monkeys hiding behind a wood shield. You promptly defeat the three monkeys and continue on your journey. What's the game?

Answer: The Jungle Book

"The Jungle Book" was published on six different systems (Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, Sega Game Gear, NES, Super NES, Game Boy Advance, and PC) in 1993 and 1994. They all used the same game engine, though due to hardware differences the titles were rather different from one another. "The Jungle Book" was one of the last NES games released. Witch Doctors appear "Pirates: Legend of Black Kat" and "Hudson's Adventure Island" as well.

The Witch Doctor appears in the Sega Genesis title.
3. You are deep in the Shrine of Daos. At long last you confront Daos, Master of Terror. You deal him what you think is the final blow, but it's not over yet. He summons the energy waves of his three defeated companions, Gades, Amon and Erim. You must stop him. The fate of the world rests in your hands. What's the game?

Answer: Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals

"Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals" is a turn-based strategy game published in 1995 for the Super Nintendo. After you beat Daos, the final boss of the game, he tries summoning the energy of his three companions. Maxim, the main hero of the game, summons his own energy with his companions in order to combat Daos.

This energy has the potential of destroying the world. The three subordinate Sinistrals Gades, the Sinistral of Destruction, Amon, the Sinistral of Chaos, and Erim, the Sinistral of Death.
4. Not all villains are intent on taking over the world. Some villains, like Veets, want you to eat plenty of sugary food in order to make you a diabetic. What's the game?

Answer: Packy and Marlon

One of the stranger educational titles I have found, "Packy and Marlon" is an SNES educational platform game which deals with juvenile diabetes. Packy and Marlon are both diabetic elephants, and it is up to you to make sure they take their medication and eat correctly. The game is a typical platformer. Strange but true.

The publisher of "Packy and Marlon", Raya Systems, also published three other SNES titles mining a similar vein, "Bronkie the Bronchiasaurus", "Captain Novolin", and "Rex Ronan: Experimental Surgeon".

"Captain Novolin", which was sponsored by Nova Nordisk who makes Novolin brand insulin, is another diabetes game.

"Bronkie" deals with a dinosaur that has a bad case of asthma. The game is meant to teach asthmatic kids how to control their asthma.

"Rex Ronan: Experimental Surgeon" deals with the dangers of tobacco cigarettes. Too bad they didn't make a sequel dealing with the dangers of marijuana.
5. You are racing in an old wagon with two horses, trying desperately to get to a village. Suddenly, a floating demon comes from nowhere and begins his attack. He attacks you with a large scythe, and occasionally sends a demon face burning in green flame trying to smash you off the wagon. You battle victoriously, defeating the hooded demon with the wicked scythe. The horse and wagon reach your destination: a village in ruins with skeletons walking around and a giant serpent that must be defeated. What's the game?

Answer: Akumajō Dracula X: Chi no Rondo

Released in October 1993, Akumajō Dracula X: Chi no Rondo is the tenth Castlevania game released on the TurboGrafx. For whatever reason, Konami never released the original PC Engine version outside of Japan.

Two years later, Konami would release the Super Nintendo game "Castlevania: Dracula X", based on "Akumajō Dracula X: Chi no Rondo". However, this remake had drastically redesigned levels, removed some playable characters, and also was several levels shorter than the original title.

"Takahashi-meijin no Shin Bouken Jima" is "New Adventure Island". "Kaizou Chounin Shubibinman 2: Aratanaru Teki" is "Shockman".
6. Space is a strange place. You are flying in your ship when suddenly you come face to face with a giant turtle. You wonder vaguely if this is some reference to Terry Pratchett's Discworld. No, it's just a mad turtle that pulls its head and limbs inside its shell and hurtles itself at your ship, trying to smash you. This is also a FIREBREATHING turtle. What's the game?

Answer: Dead Moon: Tsuki Sekai no Akumu

Outer space is a hazardous place. With our satellites, mankind has discovered a comet in the region of Pluto was hurtling toward earth. The UN promptly responds, shooting missiles at the comet. However, it turns out that the comet is in fact an alien invasion, and crashes into the moon.

"Dead Moon" is a horizontal scroller released on the TurboGraphx in 1991, published by Natsume. The game has been released on the Wii's Virtual Console service.
7. The Evil Tyrant Greedy, leader of an evil force has kidnapped your father. It is up to you to defeat Greedy. But this journey is not for the faint of heart. Greedy has several evil bosses you must defeat, including a giant hammerhead shark. What's the game?

Answer: Ristar

"Ristar" is something of a spin-off from the "Sonic" franchise. In fact, the basic character design of Ristar was developed during the design sessions that ultimately witnessed the birth of Sonic. Ristar himself is an early prototype design, ultimately rejected, for Sonic. Sega included "Ristar" as an unlockable bonus game on the "Sega Mega Collection" for the Gamecube and XBox.

The intro gives you the basic story of the game: "In a far off galaxy, an evil alien force is at work. The evil tyrant Greedy has corrupted the planet leaders and enslaved the populace. Even the legendary hero has been captured. A desperate plea for help is made... and answered by the hero's own son".
8. You are walking along a street in your hometown when suddenly you bump into a coworker who has stolen a diamond. Your infant daughter catches the diamond and uses it in her mouth as a pacifier. Your coworker steals your daughter away, and you give chase, being the model father you are. You confront many villains, including a giant clown that has only a face and two arms and bounces around the screen, trying to destroy you. What's the game?

Answer: The Simpsons: The Arcade Game

"The Simpsons" had several video games under their belt, mostly for the NES, when the classic "The Simpsons: The Arcade Game" hit the arcades in the early 1990s. The plot of the arcade game is that Mr. Smithers has stolen a diamond for Mr. Burns. He kidnaps Maggie, and the four Simpsons give chase through several stages.

The arcade game is a beat 'em up, and is the first arcade game based on "The Simpsons" All four Simpsons are playable characters.
9. An evil warlord is attempting to take over the world. His name is Gul-Agieze. You must battle through eight stages, collecting eight tomes of power in order to give battle to Gul-Agieze. Do not fear. Though the road is long and difficult, your character can transform into six different beings by swallowing magical orbs. These characters are Dragon, Waterman, Poseidon, Shinobi, Samurai and Raizin. You'll need to master every form to truly excel at this game! What's the game?

Answer: Magician Lord

"Magician Lord" was one of the launch titles for the Neo Geo. SNK published the title in 1991. Originally released as an arcade title, the game is very challenging. The six transformations that your character can go through are time limited. It is a side-scrolling action game. Nintendo has released the game on their Virtual Console service in 2007.
10. Not all villains (or, to be fair to nefarious villains everywhere, the villains' translators) have a firm grasp on the English language. What villain uttered these immortal lines: "You have no chance to survive make your time."?

Answer: CATS

CATS is much more famous for the immortal line from the Sega Genesis title "Zero Wing": "All your base are belong to us". Terry Boggard from the "Fatal Fury" Neogeo title says "Oooh, you make me so angry, you big silly". From the same "Fatal Fury" title, Tung Fu Rue has the great line ""Your fists of evil are about to meet my steel wall of niceness!" In "Mega Man VI", Dr Wily says "My scheme for world domination has FAILD".
